NANCY PELOSI ANNOUNCES THAT DEMS FINALLY SUPPORT TRUMP’S USMCA TRADE AGREEMENT WITH CANADA AND MEXICO
by Kevin Ryan

Amidst falling support for impeachment in the rust belt, and rising poll numbers for President Tump in those states, Democrats today announced they’ve reached an agreement on President Trump’s USMCA free trade deal with Mexico and Canada.

‘’There’s no question that this trade deal is much better than NAFTA,” Pelosi said during a press conference to announce their support this morning, more than a year after the Trump administration brokered a deal with Canada and Mexico on the agreement.

Going a step further, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appeared to take credit for the deal, which was one of President Trump’s signature campaign promises. “It is infinitely better than what was initially proposed by the administration,” she said, referencing changes made to the agreement in several areas including the environment.

Richard Neal (D-MA), Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, expressed surprise that they were in a position to reach a deal.

“Every once in a great while you get to participate in a ‘it will never happen’ moment, and we are witnessing that today,” Neal said.

Pelosi credited the “brilliance” of AFLCIO president Richard Trumka in the negotiations. Unions have shown frustration with the Democrats seemingly ignoring other issues as they pursue investigation and impeachment.

Indeed the Democratic leadership has been feeling the heat from voters in states that used to be part of their base. Polls earlier this year from Republican pollster Firehouse Strategies had President Trump struggling in the mega-battlegrounds of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin — but in the newest edition, he beats every Democrat. And Marquette’s latest poll now has Trump ahead of every Democratic candidate in Wisconsin.

And the Washington Post reports that a dozen recent polls on impeachment in battleground rust belt states like Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, as well as Arizona, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, showed significant opposition to impeachment, averaging of 44% support vs. 51% opposition.

Firehouse partner Alex Conant tells Axios: “Democrats racing towards impeachment are at serious risk of leaving behind the voters they need to retake the White House next year.”

It’s a concern that hasn’t been lost on Democrats, who announced their support for the USMCA less than an hour after announcing two articles of impeachment against President Trump.

The USMCA is intended to replace NAFTA by updating the 1990s era free trade agreement with one that addresses the concerns of its opponents, who say NAFTA harmed U.S. manufacturing to the benefit of Mexico. Most of the major changes to the free trade pact embodied in the new United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA) favor the U.S.

another win for trump. im not tired yet...

Great! Bi-partisanship!
Haha, yep. Pelosi claiming ownership and lauding the union for the success. Releasing just after the articles of impeachment so as to get lost in the negative Trump news. Brilliant bi-partisanship there.

You're bringing down the positive vibe in here. [cheers]

Like NAFTA, we'll have to wait to see if the impact of this is negative or positive.

deep down you know its going to be better and not just for the us.
I havent read it in detail, but I liked the part that required all 3 countries to pay 16 bucks an hour for several manufactured items. That's a win for workers in all 3 countries

Honestly, I felt that way about NAFTA.
Out of curiosity, how old are you? I was in high school and we spent quite a bit of time in a political science class discussing the pros and cons of NAFTA and my memory of it is that the cons are exactly what happened. If I hadn't been in that class I probably wouldn't have had any exposure to the debate.

Good one, 85. Yeah, Pelosi and Company stopped obstructing and reluctantly decided to support...this country's Labor Unions.

Seriously, you can't make this sh*t up. :)

lol what a chickenshit stance to hide behind.

First off, trade deals aren't made purely for the benefit of unions that line the pockets of Democrats.

Second, there was/is absolutely nothing in this deal that unions could really object to, unless you're going to lie and tell me that they all wanted this to go even further in many regards and the D's were fighting for that. This would be a lie since the D's were the ones pushing for NAFTA to not change at all - not go even further on their pet union demands.

43. I was in high school too. It was basically sold as an improved quality of life because you could take pay from your stable, good paying job and have access to more "luxury" items. I remember Clinton touting that more people could afford Italian ties like the one that he was wearing. It sure was nice when I was in college and $30 bought me a lot of things at Wal-mart.

That's crazy. Maybe it's because of where I grew up, but it was presented very differently to me. I'll say that my poli-sci teacher was actually very good at presenting things from each side, but you could tell that he was pretty skeptical of NAFTA and gatt. Our conversations were largely focused on jobs, not whether products would be cheaper.

Its interesting to me to see how political mindsets change in swing states because I've only lived in a very conservative landscape. Ironically, both of my parents are very liberal but didn't seem to affect the political ideology of me or either of my brothers.

Sorry to take this OT, I just find how individuals come to their political beliefs very interesting.

there’s your headline
Basically. The left was taking a hit in the polls, so now they are 're-writing' the history of it as 'never obstructed.'

USMCA is still flawed, but it's better than NAFTA.

Like NAFTA, we'll have to wait to see if the impact of this is negative or positive.
Honestly, I felt that way about NAFTA.
I was with Ross Perot from Day 1. NAFTA was a 'special interest bill' for both Mexico and explicitly over 100 American companies that would benefit from Mexico.

I don't like USMCA, but it replaces NAFTA. If we didn't have NAFTA, I might be against it. But we do, so ... USMCA ... and with its re-negotiation clause, it's a far better option.
