He has no idea what to do. He is trying to come across as a tough guy to appease the Trump people, while basically people are just ignoring him and daring him to do something stupid. I am starting to think this guy is on the verge of destroying his political career. I wouldnt be shocked at all if he loses the governor race next year.
It’s a move that he’s going to lose in the court of public opinion, bigly.
I dont even understand the political strategy behind it. He is just setting himself up to take all the blame if/when things get worse. If he would leave it to the school districts, then the responsibility and blame would be on them. Again, it is obviously a ways off from his upcoming election or presidential run so things can change, but I think people might be starting to see that behind the tough guy rhetoric, is just an empty suit who doesnt actually know how to govern.
I think he's trying to set himself up as the noble strongman. That's a fine strategy but when you're talking to a base that abhors authoritarianism I could see how that could backfire with stuff like this.
That is what he is trying to do, but at this point, the school districts appear to just be ignoring him. Can you really come across as a strongman when people just decide they arent going to listen to you? It is going to be interesting from a political standpoint to see how this shakes out, but I am not going to be surprised at all if we are basically at the beginning of the end of this political career. I could be wrong certainly, but as of now this guy is just flailing about and has created an almost unwinnable situation for himself.
If he has a legal executive order given during a state of emergency, then they are breaking state laws if they fail to comply.

I think there are 8 school districts who are suing him over this right now and I would be surprised to see a judge uphold his order. Could happen but I wouldn't bet on it.

I wouldn’t advise this strategy but I also think the mask mandate has very dubious value for the schools as well. If we’re going to complain about one, then we should talk about why the schools feel they need to mandate that every child wear a mask to school.
which is why I was one of the few that wasn’t buying his hype when some were certain he is a 2024 lock. Rick Scott was a weirdo but will go down as a better Governor. He’ll still win in 22 bc Florida is out there but trying to copy Trump won’t workout when you are a Governor and not a tv personality and a real estate mogul where you can nit pick everyone else as ‘an outsider’

What he should be doing is to tell the citizens to protest the mandates if they disagree with them. Change needs to happen on a local level, not by withholding paychecks to those who don't do as he says.
I agree. Unlike Trump, Desantis is going to have a political record to look at it. I think Trump benefited because he was a political unknown, so there was nothing to really evaluate aside from his rhetoric. That wont be the case for Desantis. His response to covid will certainly be brought up time and time again if he runs for president, and right now I dont think his response to covid is looking great.
He needs to quit pandering to the Trump crowd period. There are plenty of Republicans who take covid seriously, and he is risking losing them by trying to appeal to the more radical portion of the base.

Florida is ranked 25th in death per million
Florida is ranked 24th in unemployment for the US.
He's literally kept the state open, kept unemployment as low as possible, while being exactly average in terms of deaths due to COVID.
As far as large states goes, he's outperformed every governor and frankly it's not really that close.
He can't control what citizens do and don't do to protect themselves. He's also not gonna shut down the tourism business, which obviously is a driving factor to this massive surge in cases in Florida.
I think the people crowing about DeSantis Bad Man need to wait until the Fall and Winter, when it gets cold and people flock indoors, and the Delta wave moves from the south to the north. We'll see if the people eager to shit on DeSantis for case counts do the same to the Cuomos of the world when it happens, and it will happen.
Kids will likely be able to be vaccinated before the end of the year, so hopefully that will prevent as much spread during the winter. And there is a difference with Desantis though, he has actively been mocking the whole thing. Yes, this can obviously spread more to other areas, but most governors are taking this seriously and at least trying to slow the spread.
I really think he should have stayed on the sideline here, And doubt he has the legal standing to do it either.
It's not because of the case counts. It's the banning mask mandates from schools. There's no reason kids can't wear masks. It doesn't cause harm and for younger kids It's their only defense against the delta variant. Until the vaccine is available to 12 and under we should allow school boards to represent their communities. The pediatric hospitals are full and DeSantis is the first leader to not care about that happening under his watch.

Kids aren’t the driving force of the spread here in Florida though. You’re also buying into biased media reports if you think that DeSantis has been “mocking the whole thing.” He was out front early in pushing vaccines for seniors and has been steadfast in working with localities and businesses to increase vaccine availability. Most of the bad press and the misrepresentations from the White House are solely to take down a potential 2024 challenger.
There is no reason to ban mask mandates statewide. If a school system and their community want the mandates they should be allowed to mandate it. Ron is working against children's health for political points with dumb shit antivaxers.

So on one side you have a president from the democratic party, actively telling people to get shots left and right, while vaccinations tumbled after a strong start trough mid march/april (until the last 1.5 weeks with Delta).
The other side you have a governor of the republican party, (using your words here) actively telling people not to get shots. Meanwhile across the board FL is outpacing the US in terms of vaccinations.
So why do you think a government official telling people TO or NOT TO get a shot is actually changing the amount of people getting shots?
I'm not saying Desantis is even doing a better job at getting people to be vaccinated than biden, i'm simply saying it literally doesn't matter.
there are so many factors but probably bc Florida has way more unvaccinated people that have gone out in public everywhere without a mask. the behavior in Florida is very different from other States , even other Republican ones. No State is immune but I am sure if Illinois did have a spike in November he would do the common sense thing and encourage mask usage in crowded indoor spaces until the numbers flattened
