Disney's "Solo" Star Wars Flick Bombing at Box Office?

Disney is oversaturating the market with Star wars stuff. The movies haven't been amazing and there's one every 3 months.

There is even a lower bar for what a good movie is. Black Panther was a mediocre movie and it made a chit ton, plus got praised for how amazing it was. It was a good movie until Klaw was killed half way though, then it devolved into a poorly written crapfest.

They’ve gotta pump out a ton of movies an hope the SW junkies show up every time to recoup the cost they paid to acquire Lucas Films.

It won’t be long before R2D2 has an origin story movie

I think I'm the only person in the world that doesn't understand the hoopla over Star Wars. I even try, but they bore me!

I’m right there with you. Some of them are decent movies but on a whole I really don’t get the hype. I think some people fawn over it purely to be part of a cult of fanboys.

SW for me, and probably a few on here, first came out when I was 11 or so. The perfect age for this. I think I saw it 3 times in the theaters which was crazy back then. Didn't have social media to ruin anything and had to rely on magazines and toys to keep the excitement going.

Big fan of the first 3, dont think I saw the next 2, liked 6 and 7. 8 sucked and Rogue One was good. Doubt I'll see Solo in theaters, wait for rental.

SW will always have a place in my heart even though I'm not a "fanboy".

If we're being honest, none of the Lucas made films were "good" movies. Fun story lines but not what they're made out to be. IMO, rogue one is the best film of the series. 7 and 8 were pretty decent and I've watched them more than any of the original 6, but still lacking in a lot of ways.

This is legit. I can only imagine how different it was in the 70s when SW first came out. Totally different ball game than today.

I just laugh at the millennial hipsters who act like they were there in 1977 in that theater with you.

One of the many criticisms of the recent trilogies has been the Rey being more of a Mary Sue than the original Mary Sue. And the feeling (quotes fact?) that the director is playing SJW with the Star Wars universe.

She is a Mary Sue which is part of the reason why the new movies kind of suck. At least in the older movies we got to see Luke train and develop his skills; with Rey she is instantly amazing at everything she does with seemingly no training or prior know how. She draws the best swordsman (saberman?) in the galaxy the first time she uses a light saber; hot wires a ship she's never seen before. She lifted boulders on her first attempt when we spent a full 45 minutes watching Yoda teach Luke how to do this.

It's like the director over compensated for the sexes paradigm and just said "f*ck it, we'll make her the best at everything with no explanation".

It's like if you watched The Matrix and Neo was as badass as he was at the end of the 1st movie, but there was no Morpheus. He was just unstoppable from the beginning with no context.

Challenge for Disney is that they are investing Billions of $$ into the franchise...as their Star Wars expansions for Disneyland (Opening Summer 2019) and Hollywood Studios (Opening Fall 2019) are their biggest one land expansions ever.

Add in the Star Wars Hotel at Disney World...where guest will get their own costumes and their room window will be a video screen of their "ship flying thru space", Disney feels they need more and more movies to feed this monster.

Disney just announced too what their new village will be called.

Yep exactly . Loved the original movies as a kid . Can’t get into the newer stuff at all .

When I heard they were making a Han Solo movie without Harrison Ford, I did not view that favorably.

When I heard they had to fire the original directors because the early production was a trainwreck, I also did not view that favorably.

When I saw how terrible TLJ was, that zapped any enthusiasm I might have had for this movie. TLJ really is an epic pile of turds on multiple levels. I wasn't in love with TFA, but I viewed that as more of an introduction so I was a little easier on my criticisms there.

It seems people have largely enjoyed Solo and felt the actor did a pretty good job to seem Harrison Ford-ish, but it's not really something I'm super motivated to see in a theater. I'll watch it on Netflix when the time comes.

Solo has just a 70% on RT which is really low for any SW franchise film. RT scored the pile of dung known as TLJ with a hilarious 91%.

I just assumed that critics would cheer anything that Disney farted out from this franchise but Solo is getting dinged hard

I really enjoyed 7 and Rogue One. 8 was absolutely horrible. I have higher hopes for 9 because of Abrams but we’ll see.

The Last Jedi killed their momentum and people now just want to wait for it to come out on pay TV.

There wasn't enough time between Infinity War and this. I think after the debacle with the first Solo Directing crew where the project almost got cancelled their private expectations were not high for the film, so they decided to try a Summer release to see what the market could handle. Now they know and I'm guessing from now on you'll see a major Marvel release in the Summer and a Star Wars release during the Holiday Season.

That said, I think JJ Abrams is the most overrated Producer in Hollywood and I've been disappointed in how he has done with the Star Wars franchise (Star Trek, too for that matter). He hasn't had an original idea in a decade.

Rey coming off as a Mary Sue is a symptom of the fact Abrams and company have done a lazy, shitty job of character development across the board to include Poe, Finn, Hux, Kylo, and whatever that obnoxious girl's name was. We still don't even know what the hell the Knights of Ren is or if they still exist. It's just been random explosions and angry yelling. Nothing of substance.

Abrams has let two Directing teams absolutely crater projects with horrible ideas and mismanagement. The career highlights for the original Solo Directing team are the Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street, both movies that required very little in terms of plot development or actual Directing. Rian Johnson shouldn't direct another major motion picture again, either. He should be relegated to directing movies starring the Rock where all he has to do is make sure the Rock is on the screen 85% of the time with lots of explosions.

If Disney was smart, they'd dump Abrams and put Ron Howard on point for the franchise. At least with him you know there won't be gaping plot holes like there have been so far.

I wonder if Disney will entertain the idea of doing a Star Wars TV series. That seems to be the trend in the market right now, with more money going to these epic TV series with bigger budgets than ever. Truth be told, I've watched maybe a handful of movies in the past couple years. What little time I have for watching stuff anymore is exclusively dedicated to TV series; mainly because it solves the problem you're describing- it allows for much more character development since they have more time.

That said, I find all of Star Wars to be a bit too hokey for my taste anyways. I'd like a darker themed Star Wars but they won't do that since it doesn't fit their core base.

That and the quick turnaround they've done for each of the last 3 movies from theater to blu-ray of only 3 months has to weigh on some movie-goers' minds. Why blow $40 to go see it in a theater when you can wait 3 months and own it on blu-ray for $20?

That said, Solo was a fun and engaging movie. I thought it was well-done, certainly better than either 7 or 8 IMHO. Not quite as good as Rogue One, but really good.

I don't know why people ever go to theaters given how awesome home viewing is now. I haven't been to a theater in probably 12 years due to what you just said. Most movies are available On Demand via Brighthouse just 3-4 months after they were in theaters, and the new movies only cost $5 to rent. And I get to eat my own snacks and drink a beer that didn't cost a small fortune while not having 100 idiots around me playing on their cellphones or talking

The Last Jedi was pure garbage. I won’t see another in theaters after that crap.
im a huge sw fan. hell dressed up as a sw character at megacon this weekend.

i really liked rogue one. i even liked most of the awaken, up until star killer base which ruined it for me. the last jedi killed any hope i had for the rest of the series.

i wont see solo in theatres even though ive heard it was good form a few people because of how shitty the last jedi was.

I think they actually are. Premium TV is the way to go nowadays. Allows for much better story and plot development.

Disney is launching their own streaming service next year, I think. What better way to get people to sign up than launch w/ a Star Wars TV show?

The one thing that I think held Solo back from being great is the knowledge that Han and Chewie were going to make it. Take that prescience out of the experience and the plot is more suspenseful. That's where Rogue One succeeded - developing characters that you didn't know and give it a suspenseful plot where you don't know if they are going to make it. Donald Glover was great as Lando except for the scene where his droid "dies." He hammed it up so badly there, it really stood out against the rest of his character.

i didnt believe you that tlj had a 91% on rt. hell it has 96% from top critics. it only has a 46% from the fans.

that just shows why i dont trust movie critics or anyone in the press for that matter. im surprised it even has a 46% to be honest. i thought it was way worse than that.

No one bitches about Star Wars movies more than Star Wars fanboys. TLJ was alright. It's a folking science fiction movie--have fun with it.

tlj had some great moments in the movie. in fact it had some of the best scenes in any star wars movies. that said, the rest of it was even more of a dumpster fire than usf. the casino scene was the most throw away sub plot ive seen in any movie in years. dont get me started on the leia surviving in space crap. i cant forget about commander sjw.

it was a garbage movie and one that i wont even watch on a lazy saturday afternoon when its on tv.

The ONLY scene I found acceptable in TLJ was the Rey/Kylo/Snoke/Red Knights fight scene. The rest was horrible. I mean, HORRIBLE.

absolutely one of the best scenes in any star wars movies. i think the space ship battle was pretty damn good too.

The only cool scene in the TLJ was when captain nobody cared about rammed the ship through the star destroyer.
