Yes, every sci-fi series I've ever read (or watched) defined 'bombers' as ...
- Inertia or Mass [Bomber] - spacecraft with high velocity run to target, release 'dumb' (or 'last second' thrusters on) bombs
- Any 'thrusters' are only limit 'reaction control' on 2D plane (slide up/down/left/right) and not for attitude change or travel
- Mauler - spacecraft with a rail gun (or energy beam) or two which dominates the spacecraft's design
- Usually more capital ship, but could be smaller bombers, almost 'fixed gun' gunships
- Torpedo [Bomber] - spacecraft with torpedo racks
I like the 'Inertia' or 'Mauler' idea most.
Star Fleet Battles, SFB (
Wikipedia) was an unauthorized game system (as FASA was the official licensee of the Star Trek Universe in tactical games) that pushed the 'Mauler' idea on a capital-ship level, not so much a 'bomber' level. The SFB ruleset was so advanced and well regarded (especially versus FASA's), that Paramount used the rules for the video game series
Star Fleet Command, SFC (
Wikipedia), including SFC III using the Next Generation ruleset.
Although if you haven't seen Chris Robert's '99
Wing Commander feature film (
Wikipedia), it had almost a WWII / Battle-of-Britain schtick to it. I was impressed with the 'torpedo' aspects, especially since they mirror (somewhat) how a nuclear blast (especially considering the thermonuclear aspects would be minimized) would be in space. The movie was a bomb, but it had a bit of a cult following (myself included).
