Disney's "Solo" Star Wars Flick Bombing at Box Office?

absolutely one of the best scenes in any star wars movies. i think the space ship battle was pretty damn good too.

I thought most of the scenes that Luke was in were pretty good. Probably the same with Poe. The only parts that I thought were terrible were the casino planet scene and pretty much everything with Leia.

I think the biggest problem SW has had since starting the prequel trilogy is that they do TERRIBLE character development and background stories. Its become a joke: introduce new character, character is super important to the storyline somehow, we don't learn anything about why this character is important or how this came to be, kill that character off, repeat. The only exception is Rogue One, and that's probably partly due to how it seamlessly rolled into episode 4.

Bombers in space? Science fiction for sure. Everything after that was just compounding the terrible.
Bombers in space are not necessarily illegitimate as transport for large amounts of cheap munitions. Showing gravity bombs and then non-bomb objects affected by gravity in space is ridiculous. Although, I guess if you've got artificial gravity on the ship that gets the bombs moving downward with reference to the ship, then they would probably continue their "downward" momentum vector after they exit the ship.

Well, IBM paid for my free ticket mid-afternoon Friday, so I cannot complain.
After I got out early Friday evening, I posted 'my review' to social media as follows ...

Yes, every sci-fi series I've ever read (or watched) defined 'bombers' as ...
  • Inertia or Mass [Bomber] - spacecraft with high velocity run to target, release 'dumb' (or 'last second' thrusters on) bombs
    • Any 'thrusters' are only limit 'reaction control' on 2D plane (slide up/down/left/right) and not for attitude change or travel
  • Mauler - spacecraft with a rail gun (or energy beam) or two which dominates the spacecraft's design
    • Usually more capital ship, but could be smaller bombers, almost 'fixed gun' gunships
  • Torpedo [Bomber] - spacecraft with torpedo racks
I like the 'Inertia' or 'Mauler' idea most.

Star Fleet Battles, SFB (Wikipedia) was an unauthorized game system (as FASA was the official licensee of the Star Trek Universe in tactical games) that pushed the 'Mauler' idea on a capital-ship level, not so much a 'bomber' level. The SFB ruleset was so advanced and well regarded (especially versus FASA's), that Paramount used the rules for the video game series Star Fleet Command, SFC (Wikipedia), including SFC III using the Next Generation ruleset.

Although if you haven't seen Chris Robert's '99 Wing Commander feature film (Wikipedia), it had almost a WWII / Battle-of-Britain schtick to it. I was impressed with the 'torpedo' aspects, especially since they mirror (somewhat) how a nuclear blast (especially considering the thermonuclear aspects would be minimized) would be in space. The movie was a bomb, but it had a bit of a cult following (myself included).

Speaking of Bombs with cult followings, Star Citizen needs to get out of Alpha already.

Citizen: 30x the promise, but only 3x the content, for 30x the wait, as Elite.

I'm a Chris Roberts fanboy, playing most of the Wing Commander series, even Strike Commander, upgrading my PC as required through the '90s to keep playing, but they've really laid an egg on that one so far. I have no idea how they're going to sustain the game, given how much they've spent.

I like the practical course Elite has taken with Braben at the helm. And there are 0 subscription fees. Pay once (sub-$40 these days), play forever! He's always been a realist, and about only doing things right, and usable. There will always be belly aching about the game, let alone the lack of 'hand holding,' but if you are into the community, and you don't mind watching a lot of video, it is extremely rewarding.

And I haven't even done 1/10th of everything possible in the game. The immersion is, and will always be, it's greatest strength.

By far Obsidian Ant is an automatic subscribe and watch. Even if I cannot get any hours in playing in a week, I'll watch his videos a couple of times per week just before I fall sleep.

Speak of the devil, 2 of his latest updates are about a few of the updates in a few different space sim and strategy games, including Citizen ...
He really keeps playing a lot of titles, but always comes back to Elite for his mainstay.

He also just did (May 1st) a 'flashback' of how Elite got from Kickstarter in 2012, to release in 2014, even though the 2014 1.0 release is only a small subset of what we have today in 3.0/3.1.

About 4 months ago, he did a short video of how the 'New Player Experience' is in 2018. Elite, unlike others, has no subscription fees, so it's 100% reliant on new purchasers as well as 'cosmetic add-ons' (that have 0 impact to the gameplay) to keep Frontier alive.

It's a bummer this didn't do so well at the box office, I enjoyed it so much we saw it twice this weekend. It was a really fun movie and probably did the best of replicating the feel of the first film.

Bix Office dropped 65% in week 2...now Disney is expected to lose $50-$80 Billion.

One review I liked said this Solo movie was made for basically the background of one of the 2 Disney Star WarS rides next year.

It certainly seemed that way as most of the chases in Solo were pointless.

Then add Glover pretending (acting remind you) like a bad sketch in a play from his JUCO School talking to machine "don't die"...I can't believe that scene made it in it's final cut.

I saw it this weekend. Got talked into by the wife. Not going to lie, I really enjoyed it. Not as good as Rogue One, but it had a similar dark gritty feel.

100 timesbetter than the crap JJ Abrams is putting out with The Force Awakens and TLJ.

I like Donald Glover Jr. as an actor .... but his entire "i'm in love with my robot" stuff was some of the worst acting I've ever seen. I'm just guessing he thought it was stupid and couldn't get into it.

What exactly is so bad about 7 and 8? They both have the same character development issues that 1,2, and 3 had, and poor dialogue, but i still enjoyed them.

I still wonder if people would view them differently if they threw in some background stories like Snoke being the reincarnation of Plageius or that Rey is the daughter of Luke.

my problem with the force awakens is that its very generic. it was not terrible movie until the star killer base was introduced. when that happened i checked out. its basically just a big set up movie.

the last jedi is just a steaming pile of garbage. for as generic as the force awakens was, it at least felt like a star wars movie. the last jedi doesnt even feel like one. on top of that the force awakens set up so much for the last jedi to just hit on and move forward. the last jedi basically said screw all of that set up. its doesnt care about the originals at all. it didnt bother further developing any of the core characters that were primed for it. instead they tore down some of the most interesting characters instead. the casino and love interest sub plots is one of the biggest throw away sub plots in any movie i have ever seen.

we were promised a trilogy. something like an over arching story. the last jedi said screw all of that with little regard to the next movie. i have almost 0 interest in seeing whatever they call 9. this is coming from a guy that loves star wars and dresses up at conventions as boba fett.

Interesting. I guess I just see them following the exact same plotlines as 4 and 5, which is disappointing, but other than the subplots you mentioned I didnt mind them.

I'm guessing he LOVED his paycheck vs what he was getting for his former online show.

All in the edit bay that decided to keep that stupid scene in the movie should be forced to go work on Corellia.

100% this. And I would add that I hate that they are attempting to make them into action comedies. The originals had natural comedic moments which work great, but now they’re attempting to force humor into them and it is f-ing terrible.

I knew 2 minutes into TLJ that it was pure garbage the moment Poe started prank calling a Star Destroyer.

i personally didnt have a problem with the poe call. i think they took it a little further than it shouldve but i didnt hate it. i think they established that was part of his character in the force awakens. my problem was that they built him up in the previous movie to completely tear him down in this movie. that wouldnt be a problem if there were other interesting characters to build up instead.

the problem is that he was one of the very few interesting new characters and they completely discarded him. the director was more interested in making a feminist movie than just a star wars movie.
