GOL Statue

I see no facts anywhere at this time to support that GOL is getting a statue.

We are coming of a bad firing/resignation and a 0-12 season.

I don't see this happening and if it were to happen, now isn't the time. It's too soon. There's too much sourness still in the air.

It's happening. Get over it.

step out of the UCF bubble and ask any knowledgeable college football fan if GOL is worthy of a statue, most will laugh & think this was brought up on Onion Sports

Sounds like you are the one who needs to step outside your little UCF bubble. I am not saying that GOL should be getting a statute right now. I think it is probably too early, but step outside of the UCF (and the USF ) bubble and most people will tell you that GOL was a great coach for UCF, that he put us on the map of national prominence and that he made us relevant. He took a second rate, lost program without a compass or identity and created a disciplined, well organized and nationally respected program. Did he have bumps and mistakes along the way? Yes, but GOL was exactly what UCF needed when he came. He stayed a couple of years too long or his legacy would be undeniable. I hear this all of the time from fans here in South Carolina. They have a great deal of respect for GOL and UCF. It really is only UCF fans, (and some small number of internet posters from rival teams) who have anything bad to say about GOL

Anyone who has only been a fan since 2004 or later are spoiled. You have no concept of the growth that the program had over that period of time. You have no concept of what the stability of a long time nationally respected head coach did to build a true foundation at UCF. A foundation that attracted a coach like Scott Frost. You don't understand the floundering mess that was UCF football. For this alone I think GOL has earned the right to have something honoring him at UCF. The fact that he accomplished what he did here is just icing on the cake.

Get him a gold watch. Money mostly built UCF's football program into what it is today. I'm okay with building a statue of money outside the stadium.

He probably should get a field named after him, a practice facility or training facility. Maybe a small statue somewhere a little off the beaten path

However, it's just way too soon.

Funny, money builds every program but does not seem to equate to success, especially in the G5 programs. I wonder how much USF and ECU got for their money?

most fans of other programs around the State thought UCF deserved better than GOL. You have an inflated view of what other fans think or respect him. He was the first coach that got a financial commitment from UCF to take Athletics seriously. I'm not saying he was terrible for UCF but sure as hell doesn't deserve a statue, he just built a team that had one of the most embarrassing seasons in D1 history

Seriously, though, what does it look like?

I have the view of what other fans tell me. Your view is myopic. You base your view on what might have been rather than what was. I am not sure how UCF in 2004 "deserved better". Why do think we were entitled to anything? Having no history, no conference affiliation except sucking in the MAC going 27-30 in the seasons after Daunte left. We were not the student body juggernaut we are now. What did we do to deserve better? Nobody wanted to be our coach let alone a former national coach of the year. If not for the fact that GOL had resume' gate we would never had had the coach of that quality. You think we have been mediocre? More than likely we would have been the equivalent of FAU had we not been able to secure GOL. You can live in 0-12 if you really think that is a basis for ignoring the fact that GOL built the UCF program. Some people just have the "what have you done for me lately" mentality.

Like I said, young UCF fans are spoiled. They just don't understand how much the UCF landscape changed in those years. Was it a commitment thing? Yes, but that was one of the demands GOL made when he came on board. He helped bring the big boy mentality to UCF. Upgraded practice facilities, indoor practice facilities, top notch weight facilities, BHNS, paying for players to go to summer school for both semesters. These were his requirements. It helped that the AD Steve Sloan was on board, but GOL was instrumental.

Again, does he deserve a statue? Maybe, Maybe not. I really am on the fence about it. It is too early for it I will say that. My guess is that there a few people who understand that if GOL had his way he would have rode into the sunset with a Fiesta Bowl trophy. They want to compensate for the way it all ended up. Either way it is right.

We are actually in the same spot that we were in 2005 only we spent more money on stuff. Build the statue of the money.

You were not around in 2005 so you obviously have no basis, so revisionist history.

Over and over and over and.......over and over and over again.

He deserves a plaque or a bust at the alumni center.... players graduated we won a BCS Bowl he deserves recognition but not glorification. ... 5 losing seasons 2 winless 3 lawsuits and probation.

I've been following UCF, Since Daunte Culpepper, that first conference championship he won key players like Brandon Marshall, Mike Sims Walker and Steve Moffett, we're already on campus and the next year was dumpster fire which preceded a cup cake schedule. UCF, fans are not spoiled the truth of the matter this program should be a lot further than where it is. He never embraced UCF, and consistently put himself above the good of the school... proof Hiring Chuck Bresnahan as you're defensive coordinator, when he got fired from your in state rival, and you've personally beat him two years in a a row. Or refusing to release your contract to stop the school who gave you an opportunity when you were toxic and no other program would touch you from being sued. Or how about in 12 years never built relationships with local high schools to keep elite talent at home. As a fan and Alumnus I personally don't like George O'leary but it won't stop me from recognizing his accomplishment. However before he is recognized for his accomplishments UCF, needs to pay the Plancher family first. Nothing can bring there son back, but we should definitely attempt to make that right before we erect a statue of a man who was found directly negligent in Ereck Plancher death.

I call BS on how long you have been a fan. If you really had been a fan since Daunte you would know GOL was left with Brandon Marshall Mike Walker and no one else. That is why those guys played on both sides of the ball their last year. There was nobody on the roster. Hey guess What? UCF did not win a conference championship until 2007 with Kevin Smith (Who GOL recruited) and before that we had not accomplished anything. As for the contract issue, chuck B or the bit with the local coaches, complete rubbish and speculation. But how I know you are full of it is you comment about Ereck Planchard. GOL was specifically found not directly responsible for the death of EP by the jury. If he had there would be no verdict caps to stop payment.

See new fans don't understand how little respect we had or how our program was spinning with no direction and no leadership. The people funding the statue are close to the program. They understand what took place. They are not stupid. They may be a little more zealous than they need to be but they understand. You guys are just internet wannabes.

I became a fan of UCF in 2004 (I guess 12 years is still a "new" fan), the start of the GOL era. I'll argue that I had a full and complete understanding of how little our respect was in the national light, as we were on our way to a 17 loss streak. This all happening while our northern neighbors were popping out championships left and right (between basketball and football for the gators).

I agree that GOL was needed at the time, but definitely not statue worthy... Also what caption/GOL quote would go on that hypothetical statue's base? I bet something generic about "contact speed."

It's going to say "Without my old ass being here there would be no way a young up and coming coach like Scott Frost would be here." You can say what you want about GOL, but the man won our first conference championship game, took us to our first bowl game, won our first bowl game, demanded that we build an on campus stadium, and gave us the greatest wins in UCF history (Louisville and Baylor). The fact that boosters, including some that have been donating since 1982 and have seen it all, want to build a statue for the man says a lot.

It's not because of stats and percentages. Some people who like sports can't see past that. It's about other measurables. Under GOL's watch, UCF won bowl games...for the first time. Under GOL's watch, UCF won conference championships...for the first time. Under GOL's watch, UCF won a BCS Bowl Game...for the first time. Under GOL's watch, UCF finished in the Top 10 nationally...for the first time.

It's not about stats and win percentages. It's about where the program was when he got here and where it was when he left. Not 1 season, but as a whole. Is the OC of a program as successful and "hot" as Oregon taking the UCF HC job after going 0-12 before GOL got here? No. No way.

That's why he deserves a statue.
