Bitter rival? UCF doesn’t have a rivalry with FSU. Florida, South Florida, Miami, and F(A/I)U we can say we’re rivals with them. Without FSU, we would have shut our program down in the mid 80s. Bobby sent his Assistant Head Coach Gene McDowell to be our coach and get the Athletic Budget under control. FSU even paid his salary gor 2 years. Under Gene, UCF got the FSU hand-me-downs from FSU. He led us to multiple D3 and D2 championships. He was the reason we got Culpepper. He will remain on UCF’s Mount Rushmore of coaches because he found a way to keep UCF charging on when football didn’t seem like a viable option. Gene was here from ‘85-‘97 when he texted a player which was a big time recruiting violation in 97. FSU/Bobby Bowden were big time supporters of the UCF football team so I wouldn’t call them “bitter rivals”.
