Justin Holman's fate and possible changes

I know you're not rooting against him. I think I just have a little more faith that he can be an above average QB at the FBS level and that his skills can translate to Frost's system, especially considering we may not see the full blown Oregon offense until Frost has had more time to get that type of personnel in place. We probably will see other guys filter into games at QB (including Patti potentially) in more run heavy situations if nothing more than to reduce the pounding on the starter.
Holman, In my opinion, is only going to be an "average at best" QB. He had many-a-time to show differently. In fairness, he didn't have the players or too many opportunities to really improve this year. But I think if he had improved, he would still be average (which is a good player). I'm not even sure he is as good as Steven Moffit. He definitely is not as good as Kyle Israel who was average at best. Holman's throws were at times this year WAY OFF. Crazy stuff! ....but....he had not much supporting staff either.

You're post shows you don't understand SF's system or the zone read. The QB is going to run the football a lot. If he doesn't keep the ball and pick up yards on a consistent basis the offense doesn't work. Holman is not a running QB.

Holman has one year left. Why would SF waste time teaching him a new system when he's graduating? That makes no sense whatsoever. On top of that he is not accurate and not a running QB

The new QB will have the ability to run and have 2 or more years of eligibility left. It's only December.

As Frost himself admitted in his introductory presser, until you have enough of the proper personnel in place you'd be "foolish" to run a system that doesn't fit the personnel currently available. He may be introducing some of the concepts of the Oregon offense, but it will not be the full blown Oregon offense from day 1. Holman could be a perfect transition piece because he does possess better mobility than other guys currently available, along with his other advantages. If a high profile transfer steps on campus in a month or two, of course, then Holman may not be the best option. For now - for one transition year - he may very well be.

Guys get ready. Patti Football will captivate the Nation and have every top Prospect south of Lake City begging for a UCF offer*

Patti is faster than Holman.

He will have a nice big name on his jersey this year. As long as defenders can't see him and he moves the ball,
I'll be good with that.

Holman is our fastest QB today. I like surprises but we always plan for the worst. Also, I can't help but think that if Schneider worked on his initial quickness, he may have an outside shot. As we see with Bortles, he's not the fastest guy but can get his wheels going. If Schneider worked a lot on leg weight training and quickness drills, he may have an outside shot. Time will tell with this position. It's a great opportunity for a transfer QB who has some wheels.

I think Holman would be perfect for this system. Too bad that he only has one more year remaining.

Holman is definitely not perfect for the SF system. It requires quick decision making, accuracy, and good ball placement. All of which Holman never developed. Maybe because of the lack of talent around him, but his development in these areas has yet to be seen. But he is probably our best option for next year as I don't think our QB of the future is on this roster.

I'm not a big fan of Holman but I'm not sure what's going on in this thread. He is definitely athletic.

There is no evidence whatsoever that Holman has great speed or is athletic. There's no evidence that he is faster than Patti.

If Holman was so fast, why is Holman being substituted for Patti in the Wild Knight? If Patti was slow, why was he converted to the rotation of WRs?

Holman's career longest rush is 26 yards (21 in the last 2 years), with many open field opportunities to break one if he was so athletic and fast.

He wasn't exactly stellar at eluding oncoming pass rushers either.

Why are we saying that he's athletic. Is it because he is black? He is not athletic. He fails the visual athletic test.

Also, if Patti only has one year left, then he may or may not be a great choice either, regardless. I like Shark19's comment about clearing out the dead wood. Let's start new.

look across the nation at other programs that run spread offenses, there are 5'11 QBs that can get the job done.

I have no idea what will happen with the QB depth chart but unless Holman gets a better feel for the game & can start hitting passes <15 yards w accuracy all the NFL arm strength means nothing.

Holman was good enough to win 9 games (probably 10 had he started in Dublin) in this conference as a Sophomore. That 2014 team didn't rush the ball well, either. We were 103rd in the nation in rushing yards per game. So there was plenty of pressure on Holman's shoulders to get the job done offensively that year. There really isn't a better viable option available right now at QB for 2016.

With a new stable of offensive-minded coaches to guide him into this offense, the offseason to get healthy and prepared, hopefully the further growth of the very young supporting cast returning from last year, and his skill set including mobility size and arm strength - Holman has to be the front runner unless Frost lands a really outstanding QB prospect in the next two months. Holman leading us to a bowl game (I could see us beating FIU; Tulane; Temple; Tulsa; FCS team; and at ECU or UCONN) while Frost develops the future of the position behind him would be a great start to the Frost era. Then, in 2017, compete for the AAC title again with Frost's hand-picked QB leading the way.
This is the only scenario that will play out. I have no idea what many of the others are thinking. I guess they didn't take enough notice of what a bunch of freshman playing on the field looks like, especially at the QB position (with nothing but young, inexperienced people playing around the QB).

.

Agreed....but Nick has to jump up to get to 5' 11"

Seeing him next to Holman on the sidelines last year was like watching a Mel Brooks remake of Goldmember with Holman as Dr Evil and Nick as Mini-me

Could Justin Lockie be an option for us? He's already graduated.

Some of your claims of Holman not being that athletic and too slow are amusing. Holman has decent speed and he doesnt mind getting physical with defenders. As for Patti in the wild knight and as a receiver, he sure wasnt put there for his speed. His intent was being a sure hand and continuing the possession. For all the jokes about Holman should just transfer, some good points have been made. First he's had to do most of the work himself...since day one. Lucky he had a hall of fame receiving crew to work with, a veteran defensive crew in sophomore year, but could rarely get Stanback to put down the pipe long enough to have a good game and take the pressure off of him. Our OLine couldnt even block on jet sweeps.
Hopefully CSF will be able to rally the Oline to do a good job of convincing the opposing defense to commit to a spot and a running back that will make them pay.

And who exactly implied that!?

It's implied when people have no facts and visually he's not athletic, but say he is. People just spew out a bunch of crap. Read the posts over the past few weeks When comparing him to Patti, he's visually slower. What has he ever done to say he's athletic??

In reality, it's all irrelevant, because they both suck and have 1 year left I believe.
The present and future of UCF football is not with either of them. Next.....

I think that he's pretty athletic. Wait until next year.

Unless we are going to run the triple option, the QB needs to be a threat in the passing game. Holman, IMO, is a much better passer than Patti. Patti might be a better runner, but the defense needs to respect the passing game or they are going to stack 8 or 9 guys in the box to stop the run. I think after Holman, Harris is probably a bit more mobile than Schneider, but like previously mentioned, if Schneider could become more mobile, he might be the 2nd best option. I would imagine that getting a QB that fits the system would be a top priority for coach Frost this offseason- might be a HS recruit, might be a JUCO. If it's a HS kid, might not see them that much until later in the season, if its a JUCO, they are probably being brought in to start right away.

One last thing about the mobility issues of our QB's. There is a lot you can do with the spread, you don't necessarily have to run the ball a ton with your QB. Urban Meyer won a national championship at Florida with Chris Leak, a guy that is really not suited for the QB run game. Yes they did bring Tim Tebow in that year for 3rd and 1 and in goal line packages, but how did they get to 3rd and 1 and how did they get into the red zone in the first place, Chris Leak.

Our problem on offense is not the QB, that will be okay one way or the other if Frost is as good as advertised. Our problem is we can't block anybody. We get absolutely no push whatsoever. It wouldn't matter if we had Vince Young back there handing off to Ricky Williams or throwing to Jerry Rice the offense wouldn't go very far because the guys up front aren't even coming to close to doing their job.
