Let's talk realistic replacements for George

You guys will love it when a Super Mario comes into town and cleans up recruiting in Florida. So he was uneven at FIU, aside from beating us this year (no hard feat) they've been hot garbage since he's left. Here's a novel concept-lets get some good kids from FLORIDA rather than Georgia and New York. It's not a hard concept- recruit well in Florida and you will win. Even Larry Coker won with Florida recruits!

You do realize that some of our best players in recent years have been from New York (Murray) and Georgia (Miller and Perriman)? We need to recruit from everywhere, if a kid is good enough it doesn't matter what his birth certificate says.

He only won 3 games his last season there and was 27-47 overall. No thank you

Defensive coordinators don’t get as much traction these days in coaching searches as the offensive guys. However one name to keep in mind over the next few months is Florida DC Geoff Collins. The Gators have gone from allowing 21 points per game and 330 yards on defense down to 15.5 PPG and 303 this season as they’ve emerged as a strong favorite to win the SEC East and perhaps make a run at the playoff. UF also has gone from holding opponents to 39 percent on third downs last year to 33 percent this season.

I’m told Collins is a hot name amongst some UCF power brokers and could be in play in several other places as more things open up. He was a former assistant at UCF and recruiting coordinator. In addition to his prowess as a defensive coach, he’s also proven to be very adept in personnel. While on his way up, he held the title of director of player personnel at both Georgia Tech and Alabama. Worth noting is that three years after he had those titles, those programs won championships — the Tide won the 2013 BCS title, Ga. Tech won the 2009 ACC title and after his time as the Knights recruiting coordinator, UCF won the 2013 Conference USA title and the Fiesta Bowl.

“He’s an awesome dude,” said one coach who has worked with Collins. “He’s incredibly smart. Football-wise, he’s great with the X's and O's. He understands kids and the psychology behind motivation. He knows ways to motivate kids — not just from a rah-rah standpoint. And he’s a great recruiter because he’s so football-smart and because he understands kids and people so well."

Sold.

I don't see Herman sticking around Houston long. He seems irritated by their low fan support and has taken subtle shots at the fanbase twice already this season. That would eliminate Miami but South Carolina or Vtech could be in play if he's interested. UCF's fanbase gets crap for showing up late but during our comparable season(2013) no way we would have a crowd of less than 30k for a Saturday night game as a undefeated ranked team

Well let's add Ken Wisenhunt to the mix because why not? Family from TN, not far from here....
Had a shitty team with the Titans, never had a chance. He is a pretty good coach and is capable of having a potent offense. Here in Nashville, the Titans don't exactly run a good organization. They have no players except Mariota to gameplan for. Much like UCF!

remember he turned down the Rutgers job which led them to hiring Flood[laughing]

That shows he wants to stay in the South/Florida. I know most of this board doesn't like the Cristobal idea but he could be a risk/very high reward hire. But if he becomes the guy UCF should put a massive buyout in the contract if his alma mater tries to poach him if their next hire flops(assuming they don't offer the job to him this year).

Collins is a solid coach, but give the credit where it belongs. The Gators defensive success has very little to do with that side of the ball. Their offense is at minimum respectable this season. Last season, really, the last 3, their offense has been atrocious. This year they are moving the ball and getting first downs, with an offensive line that had no career starts at Florida going into the season. Florida is also scoring points on offense, something they haven't done much of over the past 3 or 4 seasons. They are giving their defense something to work with and they are keeping their own defense off the field. They also didn't play Alabama this year, that kinda helps too.

I'm not saying Collins isn't a good coach, but I don't think he is the reason Florida's defense is awesome. For all of his faults, Muschamp recruited plenty of beasts on defense.

Are there any coaches that have expressed interest (other than Chizik) that have Big 12 ties? Perhaps they may have contacts that are in the loop.

SI Thamel's take on the UCF Job...

BONUS JOB
Central Florida

Status: Open

Breakdown: In a span of a few weeks, George O'Leary went from coach and interim athletic director to retired from both jobs. UCF's first decision will be to find an athletic director, as the university attempts to position itself for the next round of conference expansion. There are a few AD names being bandied around. Buffalo's Danny White has been involved with a handful of bigger jobs and would be a logical candidate. Bowling Green's Chris Kingston is a UCF graduate has done strong work in a short time at at the school. (Could he perhaps help UCF land Dino Babers?) A wildcard here is Damon Evans, the former Georgia athletic director whose career imploded in spectacular fashion with his arrest in 2010. Evans quietly returned to college sports as Maryland's CFO in 2014. Atlanta-based Parker Executive Search is running the UCF search and has strong ties to Evans from his days at Georgia.

As for the football job, there's a near-consensus in the industry that UCF is a better job that Iowa State, Illinois, Purdue, Rutgers, Colorado, Syracuse and most other lower-tier jobs expected to open around college football. UCF has a fertile recruiting ground, recent success with a Fiesta Bowl win two seasons ago and is perhaps the best job in the American Athletic Conference.

Names: Doc Holliday, Jeff Brohm, Mario Cristobal, Greg Schiano, Eddie Gran, P.J. Fleck, Dino Babers, Geoff Collins and Manny Diaz.

...and Fleck's team Western Michigan is playing tonight. All the posters dying for a young coach will love him. He's not even 35 yet! This guy doesnt even have coordinator experience. Can you imagine if he spent his years listening to guys like GOL telling him that coordinator experience is a prerequisite?

He looks even younger than 35. I like the potential to grow with the team.

My problem with young coaches is that coaches typically last around 5 years at a school, especially at a G5 where, if successful, will be plucked quickly by a P5. So, I don't see young coaches growing with the team. I see them using us as a quick stepping stone.

That could be the case, but as long as they leave us in a good place, I really don't have a problem with that.

GOL was here for 11 years and that made him the 7th longest tenured FBS coach. This isn't the norm, by a long shot, and we shouldn't expect it again. If a young coach comes in, has success and gets plucked away in 5 years, I'll take that. Hopefully, during the next coach's tenure we move into the P5 or the AAC TV money gets lucrative enough that only the elite P5 can take a successful head coach from us.

After ball control for so long, it would be nice to see a Babers/Baylor/Quick strike offense at UCF.

That's a good thing. It means that they were so successful at UCF that somebody wanted to pay them more. Add a buyout clause in the contract so that we can spend more on the replacements.

what about DJ Durkin? haven't heard his name brought up since the job opened, would he have any interest?

don't like some of these Chizik quotes in this article. A lot of 'been there done that' , sounds like he's looking for a vacation job.....

UCF needs a hungry HC to put UCF back on the map

Lol he's not gonna talk about UCF when he should be focusing on his current job.

Hey coach what do you think of NC playing for the ACC title? Ummm...well im glad my defense got contributed but its just another example of what i can do if i become the next UCF Head Coach. :D

Sure. Every coach that won a national champion and then had to serve as a scapegoat for the school's ineptitude should stay a coordinator. That makes so much sense.

#miamilogic
Except the fact he really wasn't a scapegoat he was actually just a bad coach. After Cam and Malzahn left Auburn went to complete shit. You wanna know what's Chizik 's record at Auburn without that Championship season? 19-19

And even before getting hired at Auburn he went 4-19 at Iowa St, so idk why you guys would think that he'd be a good hire

Why are you still here? Is the Miami board full or something?

I post on a off-topic Miami board as well. I'm here for the same reason as anyone else - to receive insight on UCF's football program.
