Let's talk realistic replacements for George

The Fiesta Bowl being fairly recent is doing wonders for the perceived value of the UCF Job despite being terrible this season

The Miami job elicits more polarizing views than almost any in Power 5. Coaches from Power 5 programs I talked with are split: some say it's still a great job, others have concerns about admin support and infrastructure. Two agents told me tonight that all things considered, UCF might be a better job than Miami.

I thought we were doomed!?!?!?!

Well we don't have an extra $700,000 laying around. I expect all huggers to split the cost so my donations aren't used and they don't raise student fees. That should be around $35,000 each for the 20 of you vocal ones....good luck recruiting help to lower your share.

I'm still convinced that Charlie Taaffe was the main reason for those 5 years of success. Charlie should get an interview too. Both Charlie and Danny have HCing experience in the CFL. I think that translates to cfb very well but it's a higher level which is even better than a coach who only has cfb experience.

And screw Urban Myers and Jim Levitt. The best thing UCF can do is stick with the people who have been there when we weren't that good. We have a chance to set cfb precedent by attracting coaches with long term job security. That could pay huge dividends down the road.

I like Charlie, but he needs to stay retired. We don't need a 70 year old taking over.

Definitely sucks that we are now having to compete with Miami for a coach. I like Cristobal, but there's a lot of posters on here that don't.

This deserves a post on the JV board.

One important factor is that he be a very good recruiter. With our facilities, there is no reason we cannot get a few 4 star type players every year.

Charlie Strong
Any capable coach with recruiting ties to the south

And for shits and giggles, I'd love to see some of the reactions around here watching our office if we hired Paul Johnson once he's fired from Georgia Tech.
NO option football here!

If you like Cristobal because of South Florida ties, Charlie Patridge is a better choice. He hasn't won much in his first HC job at FAU, but it's FAU. He came up under Bielema and is a South Florida guy.

SI Thamel's take on the UCF Job...

BONUS JOB
Central Florida

Status: Open

Breakdown: In a span of a few weeks, George O'Leary went from coach and interim athletic director to retired from both jobs. UCF's first decision will be to find an athletic director, as the university attempts to position itself for the next round of conference expansion. There are a few AD names being bandied around. Buffalo's Danny White has been involved with a handful of bigger jobs and would be a logical candidate. Bowling Green's Chris Kingston is a UCF graduate has done strong work in a short time at at the school. (Could he perhaps help UCF land Dino Babers?) A wildcard here is Damon Evans, the former Georgia athletic director whose career imploded in spectacular fashion with his arrest in 2010. Evans quietly returned to college sports as Maryland's CFO in 2014. Atlanta-based Parker Executive Search is running the UCF search and has strong ties to Evans from his days at Georgia.

As for the football job, there's a near-consensus in the industry that UCF is a better job that Iowa State, Illinois, Purdue, Rutgers, Colorado, Syracuse and most other lower-tier jobs expected to open around college football. UCF has a fertile recruiting ground, recent success with a Fiesta Bowl win two seasons ago and is perhaps the best job in the American Athletic Conference.

Names: Doc Holliday, Jeff Brohm, Mario Cristobal, Greg Schiano, Eddie Gran, P.J. Fleck, Dino Babers, Geoff Collins and Manny Diaz.

Frank Wilson (LSU – running backs / associate head coach / recruiting coordinator): Wilson has more than a decade of coaching experience in the SEC at programs such as Ole Miss under Ed Orgeron, Tennessee under Lane Kiffin, and LSU. He also spent one season at Southern Miss under Larry Fedora. In 2002, Wilson was the state of Louisiana class 4A Coach of the Year and a finalist for national high school Coach of the Year. He is widely viewed as the nation’s best recruiter and has established a proven track record of developing players, most notably by the five running backs drafted out of LSU in the last five years. LSU currently has the No. 1 recruiting class in America for 2016, and if the Tigers finish with a top-five class, it will be the first time in school history with three straight top-five recruiting classes. Wilson is the recruiting coordinator and associate head coach at LSU. He helped LSU win the 2011 SEC Championship and coached in the BCS National Championship game. Although Wilson is the highest-paid non-offensive or defensive coordinator in college football at $660,000 annually, he has not priced out of the C-USA and Sun Belt Conference level jobs.

Problem, meet solution.
Perhaps we should make an offer separate from UCFAA.*

For the sake of tossing names
Bobby Williams - current tight ends and special teams coordinator Alabama. I noticed he's associated with former UCF assistant Danny Crossman when Williams coached at Michigan State. (btw Crossman was with GOL when he was Ga Tech too). Maybe he can get Crossman and FSU linebackers coach Bill Miller to join his staff. I read an article on Miller's contract. It wouldnt seem like a stretch.

Everitt Withers - head coach at James Madison...also part of the Urban Meyer coaching tree as DC of Ohio State.

I think Cristobal is wildly overrated, but would do better here than FIU, and if there's a slight chance he can recruit fairly, without a powerhouse organization behind him, then go get him.

Grabbing another head coach from Marshall would really piss them off. He is getting noticed, mentioned for S Carolina job.

Recruiting at UCF should consist of a 30 mile radius of Orlando with frequent plane trips to Atlanta and Miami.

Geoff Collins > Jeremy Pruitt.
not sure which one I would prefer but reading up on them Geoff has worked at UCF before but I like that Pruitt has worked under Saban, Jimbo, and Richt. His 2013 Defense at Florida State was nasty and their defense hasn't quite been the same since UGA stole him away.

Neither has bama's defensive backs. Anyone but Barbers or Cristobal. They could be the next Ron Prince and Randy Edsall
