New UCF QB Delivers Strong Message Amid Signal-Caller Competition

Before the second era of Scott Frost officially kicks off in Orlando, the UCF Knights must find a starting quarterback. With a slew of new faces in the QB room, one of the contenders expressed a lot of confidence entering the competition this week.

"I feel like I'm really a field general out there," UCF transfer portal quarterback Cam Fancher said to Rivals' Brandon Helwig. "Not only do you have to respect the pass and the deep shots and the quick game, but you also have to respect me as an escape artist."

A former Marshall and FAU starting quarterback, Cam Fancher transferred to UCF in December. He's competing for the starting job against a pair of redshirt juniors -- former Indiana Hoosier Tayven Jackson and a returning UCF signal-caller Jacurri Brown.

Along with his experience—having started in more games (26) than the other two combined—Fancher said he believes he has a special element in his game that defenses will have to respect.

"I can get out of the pocket and do some things—not just to run, but to create explosive plays for the guys downfield," Fancher said.

Fancher is coming off a shortened 2024 campaign with FAU, during which he completed 126 of 212 passes for 1,528 yards, six touchdowns, and six interceptions in nine games. On the ground, he carried the ball 99 times for 365 yards and three touchdowns, averaging just under four yards per attempt.

While Fancher enters the quarterback competition with the longest resume, his time with FAU ended abruptly. The left-hander suffered a broken clavicle on a brutal hit to his throwing arm in the first quarter of the Owls' 49-14 loss to East Carolina during Week 10.

The UCF faithful will soon find out if the injury has affected the southpaw transfer for the worse or if he's still capable of creating those "explosive plays."

Before the injury, Fancher was playing pretty poorly at FAU. Saw a few of their games, they were tough watches.

He may have experience, but it’s all at the G5 level. And both Marshall and FAU seemed to get better without him.

If Fancher wins the job, I will of course support him. But oof, that would be rough for the QB room overall .

I find it funny that the article says Fancher thinks he’s different than the other two guys (Jackson and Brown) because he can get outside of the pocket and make things happen.

In reality, Brown is arguably one of the best QB’s in the country running the football. But unfortunately, he’s woefully inaccurate throwing the football. But yeah, I kind of doubt Fancher has a leg up on him making plays when the pocket breaks down lol.

Sigh. He SOUNDED pretty good the OP's linked article. ;)
So does Brown in articles where he has quotes, but at least last year we didn't see any arm talent.

But maybe one or the other is fixable if Milton can actually coach and the offense fits them better. I'm sure it was hard to establish any consistency in that steaming pile of crap offense we used to have.

That was the problem last season. You've got to be versatile nowadays. The Kriptonite against good running QBs with inaccurate arms is Big XII DCs loading the box and DARING that kind of QB to beat them with his arm. As we've seen, it works.

If you listen to commenters in all forums, Jackson is going to be a top QB in B12. But if you look at what he’s done, you would see it’s not trending that way. Indiana didn’t like him so they hit portal. Indiana actually did good with a different QB. That QB left and he still wasn’t going to be starter so he left. He was plan B for them. I hope he’s plan B for us.

Fancher was the first quarterback taken by Frost.

What is Milton going to do exactly? It’s insane how little any of you in this forum know about college football or football in general.

Keep in mind that last season's Hooser signal caller, Kirtis Rouke, passed for over 3,000 years, had 29 TDs vs 5 interceptions and was drafted by the 49ers. This year's #1 QB is Fernando Mendoza, tabbed by some services as one of the top ten portal picks of the year.

Being a 'Plan B" to those two studs doesn't necessarily mean he can't be a Plan A for the Knights this season.

Just don’t expect Plan A results.

Maybe not. But I think the difference is sample-size. Jackson and Brown were both relatively high-level recruits who have enjoyed just a handful of P5 starts. We don’t know if there’s another level they can reach that hasn’t been unlocked yet.

With Fancher, he’s had plenty of time to show us who he is as a player. So far, that’s been a G5 QB who gets sacked a lot, turns the ball over, and loses as much as he wins. Just kind of uneven all-around for me.

I think UCF wants Jackson to win the job. But if he doesn’t play well, I’m more confident that Frost can make it work with J. Brown than I was with Grandpa Boom. With Brown, I would expect a lot of 12 & 22 sets with multiple tight ends (and multiple RBs at times). We saw how inventive Frost was switching formations on the fly his last tenure.

Watching some of Fancher's highlight vids he looks a lot like KZ when he plays. Especially running. Shifty, smart, and fast. That's a small sample size i'm working with here though only watching a couple vids on utube.

Qb competition/controversy going into the summer is a good thing in my opinion. I like they have to compete for the job rather than being ordained. With Rizk transferring out at least we can think that maybe the remaining Qbs were/are better than Rizk and thru Spring practice that was obvious.

Go Knights!

Jajaja. I think this guy actually believes all that. Fancher has no business competing for a starting QB spot in a power football program.

.500 record in G5, 60% passer with 27 TD and 21 INT. LOL.

Oh forgot about Milton developing him (my bad).

You guys are seriously discussing a kid that was brought in because there was no money involved, a body type to take reps and hits in practice…a scout team type of QB. That’s all.

CAM Fancher is the most proven of all the UCF quarterbacks. He is a 60% career completion guy, coming off his best season to date.

Newton won the Heisman.
Ward won the Heisman.
Fancher next?

Just ask yourself this question: Had any of the other 3 UCF quarterbacks jumped in the transfer portal, would any have signed with a P4 program?

yep, coaching never makes a big difference. That is why schools pay them 100's of thousands to do it. That said you can only improve a player to whatever potental he has. I don't know what that is with any of these guys and neither do you.
