New UCF QB Delivers Strong Message Amid Signal-Caller Competition

Before the second era of Scott Frost officially kicks off in Orlando, the UCF Knights must find a starting quarterback. With a slew of new faces in the QB room, one of the contenders expressed a lot of confidence entering the competition this week.

"I feel like I'm really a field general out there," UCF transfer portal quarterback Cam Fancher said to Rivals' Brandon Helwig. "Not only do you have to respect the pass and the deep shots and the quick game, but you also have to respect me as an escape artist."

A former Marshall and FAU starting quarterback, Cam Fancher transferred to UCF in December. He's competing for the starting job against a pair of redshirt juniors -- former Indiana Hoosier Tayven Jackson and a returning UCF signal-caller Jacurri Brown.

Along with his experience—having started in more games (26) than the other two combined—Fancher said he believes he has a special element in his game that defenses will have to respect.

"I can get out of the pocket and do some things—not just to run, but to create explosive plays for the guys downfield," Fancher said.

Fancher is coming off a shortened 2024 campaign with FAU, during which he completed 126 of 212 passes for 1,528 yards, six touchdowns, and six interceptions in nine games. On the ground, he carried the ball 99 times for 365 yards and three touchdowns, averaging just under four yards per attempt.

While Fancher enters the quarterback competition with the longest resume, his time with FAU ended abruptly. The left-hander suffered a broken clavicle on a brutal hit to his throwing arm in the first quarter of the Owls' 49-14 loss to East Carolina during Week 10.

The UCF faithful will soon find out if the injury has affected the southpaw transfer for the worse or if he's still capable of creating those "explosive plays."

Before the injury, Fancher was playing pretty poorly at FAU. Saw a few of their games, they were tough watches.

He may have experience, but it’s all at the G5 level. And both Marshall and FAU seemed to get better without him.

If Fancher wins the job, I will of course support him. But oof, that would be rough for the QB room overall .

I find it funny that the article says Fancher thinks he’s different than the other two guys (Jackson and Brown) because he can get outside of the pocket and make things happen.

In reality, Brown is arguably one of the best QB’s in the country running the football. But unfortunately, he’s woefully inaccurate throwing the football. But yeah, I kind of doubt Fancher has a leg up on him making plays when the pocket breaks down lol.

Sigh. He SOUNDED pretty good the OP's linked article. ;)
So does Brown in articles where he has quotes, but at least last year we didn't see any arm talent.

But maybe one or the other is fixable if Milton can actually coach and the offense fits them better. I'm sure it was hard to establish any consistency in that steaming pile of crap offense we used to have.

That was the problem last season. You've got to be versatile nowadays. The Kriptonite against good running QBs with inaccurate arms is Big XII DCs loading the box and DARING that kind of QB to beat them with his arm. As we've seen, it works.
