Remember that time GOL lost to FIU?

I was thinking we should take down the knight on the horse near IOA plaza and put the GOL statue there. He is clearly deserving.
Dude.., your obsession with GOL is just wierd and creepy now. It's the only thing that you ever post and talk
about

I'm still waiting for the huggers to come eat their crow and admit what we had been saying for years: GOL was never the right guy for the program.

Wow. We beat FIU. Frost has cemented his legacy. How about we let a few years go by and then assess one coach against another. Beating FIU means one thing and one thing only...we beat FIU. It wasn't a win in conference play. It wasn't a bowl victory. It doesn't bring us a conference title. We beat a pathetic team (like we were last year) that lost to UMass last week. I like what I saw and this program looks like there is a lot of upside in the years to come.

I didn't see final score but UMASS was beating Miss State I think.

They lost, but were only down 6 with 3 minutes to go before giving up a TD.

I was thinking that I cannot wait for the GOL statue to be erected so that so many whiners and other arm chair AD wannabes can forever be under the gaze of a man that they so despise.

I totally agree with you assessment of the insignificance of FIU. However, your guy failed to beat that insignificant team TWICE. My guy beats him on his first try with the same players your guy lost to FIU with just last year. My guy is better. No statue for GOL.

But for "his guy" "your guy" would have had no interest in coaching at UCF. You do not understand perspective. Was it time for GOL to go? Yes. Was he the right coach for UCF at the time? Yes. Think of it this way, without the 0-12 season Brent Key is still our coach. So be thankful for what has come before and be thankful for the great future that UCF has. And for God sake, just shut up about it already.

You have to admit that we could have been MUCH worse off with any number of other "coaching carousel" choices during the time O'Leary was here.

Look aroumd, there are some schools out there who had two or three great seasons with a good hire only to see them move on to better programs in better conferences and the old team slid back into the abyss.

Then there are those programs who have to keep hiring a new coach and "rebuild" every 3-4 years during which they never achieved conference championships, bowl victories or even a winning season.

We at least achieved some level of greatness on occasion that we can feel proud of, even with the baggage of our low points too.

One time at band camp....

Remember the time when GOL beat Baylor in the Fiesta Bowl?

I am no GOL fan but the guy for better or worse did some great coaching and some horrible coaching. Time will tell about Frost and if he is really good And we don't get to be part of the P5 we won't have him for long.

One Fiesta Bowl that was cancelled out by two 0-win seasons.

Last time I checked the hardware is ours and will never be taken away. I don't know what alternate universe you reside in to think otherwise. It was earned on the field, and on the field is all that matters. GOL wasn't my coach or not my coach. He was our coach and like him or not, he's gone and he isn't coming back so you should try to move on in life instead of living in the past. I'm 100% behind Frost and what he's done so far. Looking forward to this style and system coming into its own.

How about a hall of coaches like Epcot's Hall of Presidents? We could even use their animatronics for McDowell, Kruczek, O'Leary, and Frost. Only question: what would we have them say? Who wants to nominate the quintessential phrase for each? Send you entry in a SASE along with 2 box tops to Merkel Press, Pegasus Atrium, Orlando, FL. Relatives or employees of UCF's Athletic Department are not eligible to enter. Winner gets 2 free tickets to this year's bowl game.

4 Conference Championships and played for two more. That's 6 out of 12 seasons winning a Conference Championship or at least playing for one. Plus contributing to the best graduation rate for athletes for public universities in the country.

Gosh that guy sucked.

Haters need to move on. They really don't understand how the real "game" of college football works. We could have wound up with a coach that only wanted to win at all costs, including letting multiple abusers and criminals on the team, faking achedemic records to keep players eligible and REAL recruiting violations that could have destroyed every bit of progress we have made over the years.

If you want to blame someone for last year's record blame the university leadership. They were the ones that talked O'Leary into staying an extra couple of years past the Fiesta Bowl win which was when he wanted to retire. Don't hate them too much though since they are also the ones who have built our school into the great place it is today.

That is precisely the point to this thread. He's gone, but some fans (NASAKNIGHT, Knight_Light) won't get him go and insist on building a statue to immortalize him.

THIS

Cmontcityknight2. This graphic is all you need. Similar team, even better conference affiliation, big school, all the advantages that UCF has and look what they accomplished in the same time frame. This could have been us. Once the statue is built you can pay homage before every game...

Just as humiliating, after firing Leavitt and discontinuing the I-4 series, we started beating them rather consistently in football and basketball, something we almost never did before. Even shut them out a couple years ago?

One could easily redraw that graphic to show:
  • # of 0 win seasons
  • # of less than .500 seasons
  • # of blowout losses
  • # of FCS losses
  • # of sanctions
  • # of former player family lawsuits
  • # of wins against in-state big 3
  • Etc
And it would look a lot different. You just choose to focus on the positive, which is fine, but you can't ignore that 50% of the time he was utter garbage as well. GOL was average at best. Not statue worthy.

You should be mad at Hitt. He is the one that signed off on the statue.

What happened the other 6 seasons?

Been reading this thread and it does puzzle me the rush to erect a statue of GOL. I am not a hugger or hater. GOL is no Bobby Bowden or Bear Bryant. He is an average coach in many ways. Is he statue worthy? Not really. Am I upset about somebody putting a statue if Oleary up? Not really?

I look at Gene McDowell. That guy came to UCF amidst of the football program almost collapsing. He saved UCF football. If not but for him lieing to the FBI over some cell phones , he would be viewed in a more glowing light in UCF's football history. Do I think McDowell was the future? No, but I do think with out him there is no football program at least one worthy to hand off to O'Leary who has handed it off to Frost. If I am bothered by anything, it is McDowell had just as significant maybe more impact on UCF football than Oleary did. The sad thing is Gene tarnished his image on his own but I don't fault his loyalty to his players . The statue is almost a thing to O'Leary is the start of UCF football.

I think the GOL image was quite tarnished by EP and the major athletic sanctions. Would PSU erect a Joe Paterno statue today? Paterno at least finished his career over .500.

O'Leary was the reason we received a reduction of football scholarships? Um, think again. It was Tribble and the wide receivers coach who caused us that pain, not O'Leary.

In fact, if it weren't for O'Leary's insistence that the school appeal the post season ban we also had received due to the other two idiots we never would have played in the Fiesta Bowl!

You haters need to realize O'Leary was not that bad and move on. He wasn't perfect and didn't do everything right but good grief you haters have a hard-on for dogging him. I just don't get it.

Riiiiight. GOLs boss and GOLs subordinate were involved in the scandal, yet GOL knew nothing? Your hugger is showing.

Remember when the Haters could put the GOL hate behind them and enjoy UCFast Frost football? Must suck to live a life constantly bringing up the past and not fully enjoying what we are becoming. Do you think I was thinking about GOL in Michigan or at the Maryland game? Or last weekend? Hell no!

The haters want nothing more than to move on from the guy. It's you huggers that won't let him go. Immortalizing him in a statue is the worst thing that we could possibly do.

So anyone who doesn't fully hate O'Leary is automatically a hugger?

Yeah, THAT makes sense.

You are the one not letting it go for crying out loud. YOU started this thread! Who cares if some alumni want to build a statue with their money instead of putting it towards something more meaningful to the program. If you want people to stop talking about "the most hated coach in the history of the world" Then stop posting about it with ridiculous threads like this. It makes you look like a Cows fan in Knights clothing and an unrepentant troll.
