With Scott Frost returning to UCF, we caught up with Mitch Sherman, who covers Nebraska for The Athletic.

Sherman provides some insight on Frost's tenure at Nebraska, specifically examining how things went wrong in Lincoln.

Will Frost be successful again as he returns to UCF, Sherman thinks there are some reasons why this could be a better fit.

Thanks for watching here ... from the Sons of UCF.

Sounds like Frost walked into a giant turd sandwich and was asked to spin that poop into gold.

Granted he only had a few years of head coaching experience so I believe that factored into the issues he ran into at Nebby.

Gonna watch this soon

I think one factor that is currently helping Rhule is NIL which wasn’t legal yet for Frost’s first 2-3 years there. Under pre nil rules Nebraska would have had zero chance at landing QB Raiola who was a Georgia commit. In a pre nil World it wasn’t that great of a job with who they had to recruit against in the Big10.

Good listen.

Not trying to make excuses, but it almost feels like he really was right on the cusp of doing something there but then the loss of his father and Covid19, not small things. Everyone dealt with Covid, but to Mitch’s point the highly touted FL recruits couldn’t take lock down in Nebraska and bounced. And the 22 losses by one score is mind boggling. I watched many of those games, Adrian Martinez completely choked away many of the games, special teams as well. Win majority of those games and he’s still coaching there.

Great line when he said that a few of the assistants told him there was ‘UCF Frost and Nebraska Frost’ about his personality when doing things like going out to dinner. There he would get bothered by fans constantly and they insinuated that Scott was constantly uptight and annoyed there. At UCF he can go out to dinner in Winter Park and not be bothered.

Agreed, on those 1 score games, his team found a new way to lose every time.

I am with you! He had that team playing well and frankly any opponent I am sure was very concerned playing them. You don’t lose by one score to the teams they were playing without talent and good coaching. So excited to see what happens the next several years.

Interesting interview to get his perspective looking back on Frost's career thusfar. I wonder what he would've said if you'd asked him to predict whether Frost will be successful at UCF version 2.0. Sounds like most in Lincoln will be watching fairly closely and would be happy for a redemption story - but do they think it is likely to happen?

Absolutely what you said. Fresh start here. I believe it will be better but it will take tremendous discipline on the parts of both coaches and players to hit the highs we had last time with him now in the Big 12 years coming up,

Becoming a wiz at using the transfer portal and NIL will have a big impact too. UCF/Orlando is still a very attractive spot to come to which is why everybody seems to be so nice when you visit :)

He had a slow start in the transfer portal but it has picked up nicely and he did hire a ‘GM’ so that was smart of Terry/him knowing it is too much to navigate alone. And yes UCF’s location is helping and why he knows this job has a ceiling others don’t. it is just our nil collective that could limit the Program.

Great interview, Adam. Sherman’s recounting Frost’s opening Nebraska presser where he said he had doubts until the very end tracks with the infamous 12/27/17 golf cart discussion with Daniels and Pat Clarke. Your post about that came up when I googled the incident. Also mentioned was his trip to Wawa in UCF gear after a game where nobody recognized him.

Really enjoyed the interview. Good questions and insight on the culture and factors which affected him at Nebraska. Reminded me of O'leary talking about a program's growth. It was something g to the effect of "first you lose big, then you lose close games, then you win close games, and then you win big."

Seems like maybe Frost was about to start winning the close games at Nebraska.

that would work with a normal amount of close losses, but they had way too many. so nebraska's program growth was "first you lose close games, then you lose more close games, then you lose even more close games, and then you just get tired of losing close games."

Well, Nebraska's AD and fans would definitely agree with you. Maybe I'm just hoping O'leary's philosophy explained how Frost wasn't as bad as his record. 😊
