Stand back and stand by.....???

He couldn’t have been given an easier softball opportunity to denounce white supremacy groups. He handled it predictably bad. But didn’t lose a single voter over it.
But the key is: he didn't gain any voters either and given that he's behind in the race, that's not the way you make a comeback.

I would bet that Biden probably lost more votes tonight than Trump gained. The "law and order" and GND questions probably hurt him pretty badly with the fringe. Coming back to covid on almost every topic also seemed to make him a 1 issue candidate. I get why he would do that, but it undermined his depth of knowledge on the other stuff. Maybe it was Trump taking him out of his game, but you'd think he would have been prepared for that.

Well he certainly didn’t win any back. Biden talking about his son’s addiction tugged on the mother’s hearts
There is no winning strategy debating a father about his sons drug abuse. Particularly a son who lost his mother and sister in an auto accident that he survived.

Biden had the largest polling lead going into a first debate since Clinton/Dole. So you may be right in that Biden already has most of the available swing voters in his corner. Trump seems to be near a bottom of where he can go in this hyper-partisan world. Trump needed to do something to turn the tides. Biden just needed to not crap his pants.

Trump's biggest weakness is losing women voters. White women and suburban women have shifted dramatically away from him. He needed to do something to get them back. His plan seems to be fear that rioting mobs are going to burn down the suburbs. That probably motivates his current base of support, but I don't see his insane ranting doing anything to bring those those lost voters back. Likewise, I do not think those voters have been pulled to Biden because of his personality or policies, they've been repelled from Trump. So Biden just needs to be the "meh yea OK" kind of candidate that I think he is.

I dont think overall that he handled it bad. He said "sure" a couple of times and Wallace should have allowed Trumps pivot to Antifa. Unfortunately, 2 words undermined what was a pretty good response and had Biden on the ropes until Wallace saved him.

After a second prompting by both Wallace and Biden, the president said, “Proud Boys, stand back and stand by.” He then added, “But I’ll tell you what, somebody’s got to do something about antifa and the left.”

They've already included it in their motto.

What in the actual fuk. The sitting POTUS is openly endorsing white supremacy.

How f*king hard would it have been for Trump to say, "I disavow white nationalism!!!"? That's it. That's all he needed to say.

Responding by asking "which ones?" is like responding to a question about whether you condone the abuse of women by asking, "What kind of abuse do you mean? Sexual, verbal, physical?"

Yes. He's a white supremacist, you haven't figured that out yet?
since "white supremacist" has devolved into "people the left doesn't like or is just generally afraid of having a platform because they might be influential", then you're 100% correct.

just so you know, there was actually uh, a switch many years ago, where white supremacists are actually the good guys and no longer stand for what they did when slavery and the KKK were instituted by them.

So if the proud boys are actual, legitimate white supremacists, why don't we have any examples of them doing the kinds of things that white supremacists are known for? Is it subtle white supremacy? I'd honestly never even heard of them until last night.

The chairman of the proud boys is half black, half Cuban. Can't get anymore white supremacist than that.

If you've got ten minutes to kill, here's a summary of what the Proud Boys are all about.
