Stand back and stand by.....???

You seem to imply that Trump sought to unify the country from the moment he won the election and those mean, nasty Democrats wouldn't allow our Uniter-in-Chief to do it.

Funny, I don't remember that.
We shouldn't be united. Half of the US is evil. Why would anybody want to unite with evil as a compromise?

I'd like to laugh -- but sadly, you've accurately described the state of our politics.

Frankly, I'm embarrassed that it's my generation of Americans who are on the verge of screwing up what made this country so great for so many years.

Yes. Any politician. When a large number of people get into the mindset of this is my team and I’m rooting for them at all cost, that is dangerous. Trump or Obama, doesn’t matter. When majorities feel this way, the bounds of what is acceptable get pushed or broken. Because valid criticisms are harshly attacked because they become criticisms of that identity. It leads to nationalism and the development of the us vs them mentality that now runs rampant in this country. If everyone stepped back and realized that neither Obama or Trump are your friends or worth dying on a hill to defend we could realize that it’s just two sides to the same coin. The average liberal has a lot more in common with the average conservative than liberals have with Obama or conservatives have with Trump.
I don't see as many of the dire consequences in it but I do agree with a lot of what you just said.

It’s not dire at this point but the population who have adopted the us vs them mentality is growing. At some point it gets to a breaking point. When it’s strong enough and distributed between opposing viewpoints you get civil war. When it is a large majority on side you get unchecked authoritarianism.

I can agree with a lot of what you said but I cannot disagree more with this statement. From the very beginning in school where you're taught that conservatives are against change to the labeling of anyone expressing conservative views as neocon and then Trumpets, MAGAts, etc., conservatives have been vilified for decades. Now, it might all be hidden in calling them "the right" as in Vast Right Wing Conspiracy or all the strawman -ists of the right that are constantly used to portray conservatives as the moral evil in every discussion. But the people that you are trying to paint as empathetic and innocent have been labeling conservatives and minimizing them since before either of us was alive and always framed in a way that was socially acceptable to be on their side and unacceptable to be on the other side.

Look no further than what has happened when you wear a red hat in public in the last 4 years to see the exact converse of what you are trying to lay out.
Conservative means KEEP IT THE SAME

Your generation's biggest mistake was telling their children that discussing sex, religion, and politics was off limits. Living high on the hog made them nervous about rocking the boat. Now, later generations are having to figure it out on their own and social media has made it completely "in your face".

So if the proud boys are actual, legitimate white supremacists, why don't we have any examples of them doing the kinds of things that white supremacists are known for? Is it subtle white supremacy? I'd honestly never even heard of them until last night.

I thought they were a gay rights group.

I'll say that we are pretty close to that breaking point. This "the other side is evil, they should get no quarter" has been going on, at least, since Clinton's second term; it has escalated to what it is now, a system of governance where nothing gets done because neither side wants to compromise, of extend an olive branch.

And, I think that's what both parties want, keep the populace divided so they don't catch up to the screw job the are handing to us.

Main reason why both parties have turned me off to voting/supporting either.

And said the same shit about Obama merch. It's freaking weird. I see pop up stands on the side of the road with all of this apparel like I'm outside of a football stadium. It's disturbing.

I have no clue what you are talking about here.
For once, I agree with DaShuck. The baby boomers discussed sex more with their kids than our parents did. When I was a kid you were to be seen and not heard. My parents cared less about what I thought about politics, or religion, they told us what we should think. We did spoil our kids, and they in turn coddled their kids, to the point they all became snowflakes.
