Y'all know that I get most of my CFB fix from Split Zone Duo, having listened to it's "spiritual predecessor," Podcast Ain't Played Nobody. The senior statesman of the podcast is Steven Godfrey (https://x.com/38Godfrey), who is an enormous supporter of UCF, having been the self-proclaimed "G5 Hipster" his entire career. Quite a bit of the reporting he does in the CFB space is based around hiring/firing season, and he seems to be extremely well-sourced in the coaching and agent community. When he shoots his shot, he doesn't miss. Part of his time on SZD is doing a solo show roughly once a week called The Single Wing, where he spends 50% of the time talking ball and 50% of the time talking about life, being a dad, trying to learn how to BBQ, etc. His episode last week spent 8-10 minutes talking about Frost, and I was taken aback by how candid he was. I don't think Godfrey has personal beef with Frost since he doesn't do the traditional media model, but holy shit was he critical of this in a way that he's typically only reserved for Dilfer @ UAB.

Some excerpts:

  • "Yet again, we are taking the coach who did something for us for us in a different league, and going back for nostalgia reasons. This one is weird for me, because they could have hired a lot of different people."

  • He further insinuates that agents/coaches all agreed with him that we were the better job than UNC

  • He gives Frost a lot of credit for an insane turn around in 2016/2017, and spends some time talking about when he was embedded with Taggart @ usf in 2016. They were watching tape before our game and were particularly worried about what we would look like in 2017.

  • "Scott Frost and Nebraska ****ed up...for Scott Frost reasons." (insinuating that it wasn't Nebraska's fault) continued: "I know UCF isn't Nebraska, but is it just the understanding that he won't have the same problems of like maturity and management and accountability and stuff...are we just acknowledging that there's less of that in Orlando or that it's easier? This is a Big 12 job now..."

  • "...you (UCF) could have had a lot of coaches, you could have been really innovative here in a year in which you probably had a better shot at talking to more people in the market than you might (normally) because SO many other jobs didn't open, so you go with this guy...off the bench"

  • He follows up the last line with: "...who, by way.......he's an asshole. I don't mean he's an asshole on the field, he's just a prick. Cobra Kai, ****ing high school movie villain asshole...and he has been to SO many people in the industry. He's a prick, and everybody knows it. And that's fine, if you want to win with a prick, that works for a lot of programs....it's just funny that they sought him out."

  • "...it's very obvious that Scott pushed for this job, because he wanted to get back in...and you can't tell me that you're (Scott) not preying up nostalgia and sympathies of these boosters that you used to have a relationship with...who you ****ing dropped like a bad habit to go to a bigger job last time. What do you think he's gonna do...do you think he's gonna stay at UCF for 20 years?"
