• They laugh at all those "gloom and doom" scientists who tell us we need to be prepared for their 'crazy sci-fi' scenarios, whether it's about viruses, our nuclear waste dumps, or climate change -- until one bites us in the butt.

• They delight in talking about rugged individualism and "not needing no stinkin' Government" -- until we're all depending on our Government.

• They laugh at the Defense Production Act because the private sector has proven they'll step up and volunteer without it -- until our need for masks and ventilators rises to crisis-levels and Trump gets so pissed off with the lack of production and actually enacts it with General Motors.

• They tout their "pro-life" credentials -- until it comes to kick-starting our economy while our nation's virus infection rate is still increasing.

• They sneer at anything that smacks of socialism--until everybody needs help and all of us working together becomes the rule of the day.

Everyone wants the economy to be up and running as soon as it possibly can be. We also dont want the virus to continue to spread to the point that our healthcare system is overloaded all over the place and even more people are getting sick and dying. The other thing you arent acknowledging, is if the virus essentially goes unchecked because we just go back to our lives as normal, the economy is still going to struggle because people who dont want to get sick arent going to go out eat, travel, etc. i get you wont actually address any of this and will just stick to your "TDS" tourette's, but your "TDS" tourette's doesnt change the reality of the situation.

#1 - depends what you're referring with the gloom and doom. I've seen people toss around this could kill 25% of the world's population. Yes that is gloom and doom nonsense. I've seen quotes on this board about killing off 10,000,000 in the US. Not happening.

#2 - nobody said the government has no roll. Dramatic. Private industry is leading the innovation and supply chain. If there are possible solutions, you can bet private industry will work faster and smarter.

#3. Private industry hasn't stepped up? Jesus...you have companies working around the clock for new instant covid tests, medicine, supplies. Companies donating medicine and other items. Companies retooling to supply hand sanitizer for free. Go on and on.

#4 pro life - what are you talking about? I said from the beginning that the sick and old need to quarantine. Have services to make sure they get supplies to them without going out. The younger healthy folks have such a small chance of dying and if we can practice distancing and limit large gathering that would continue to help.

#5 you realize the government only exists because of the individuals/companies and frankly the 51% actually paying taxes. Of course there is a need when the government shuts down everything. That seems a bit obvious when the government shuts everything down that you might need help. Hard to blame that on capitalism but you will.

I don't want to downplay in any way, shape, and form, the countless volunteer activities that individual people and businesses are doing.

This particular part of my OP was referring to the Defense Production Act that is designed to mobilize large and small industries to help in very specific ways.

We do not have anywhere close to the number of masks, gowns, gloves and respirators that is need for this crisis. If the DPA had been enacted weeks ago, we would at least be on our way to addressing this critical need. But the WH was obviously concerned with anything that smacked at governmental-control of the private sector (that's something socialist Dems do, not private business champions.)

So as things stand, we're screwed.
