This is crazy.

regulators were considering whether to certify VW’s 2016 models for sale -- a routine process for most automakers. Regulators said they wouldn’t approve the cars unless the company resolved the questions about real-world tailpipe pollution. VW engineers continued to suggest technical reasons for the test results. None of the explanations satisfied regulators, who indicated the models wouldn’t be certified.

“Only then did VW admit it had designed and installed a defeat device in these vehicles in the form of a sophisticated software algorithm that detected when a vehicle was undergoing emissions testing,” the EPA said in its letter to VW Friday.

The VW investigation covers seven years’ production of diesel cars, including the VW Jetta, Golf, Beetle and Passat and the Audi A3.

Testers drove the monitor-equipped diesels from San Diego to Seattle because if Volkswagen had gamed the emission test, they couldn’t be sure how, German said. In another cheating case years ago, he said, long-haul trucks were equipped with devices that allowed the engines to gradually discharge more and more harmful nitrogen oxides the longer the vehicle cruised at the same speed. The more emissions, generally speaking, the greater the engine power. The 1,300-mile trip under varying conditions would expose any such scheme in the VWs, German said.

On the open road, the Jetta exceeded the U.S. nitrogen oxide emissions standard by 15 to 35 times. The Passat was 5 to 20 times the standard.

Laugh Out Loud at the idea of the Obama Justice Department pursuing criminal charges against any Fortune 500 sized company. They will fine them, then turn around in a few months and give them tax incentives that compensate for the fine.

I can't speak to the Obama JD part, but I would't expect any company getting such a massive fine as suggested in the two linked articles.

There has been no bigger friend to corporate wrongdoing in this country than BHO. People have even called it The Holder Doctrine. Sad, but true.

Not gonna lie I'm impressed, that is some awesome engineering. I mean it sucks ass for the environment and I feel really bad for the future generations, but I am still impressed.

They should ban VWs from being sold in the US. They suck anyway.

It's really not that big of a deal. They tricked the government, the dumbest work force in the country. Why the fuk wouldn't the government be testing the actual emissions of the cars instead of what the car's computer is telling them the emissions are. They brought this on themselves for being fuking morons.

Ha- I'm in Germany now and people are freaking OUT.

Mostly because this will severely damage the religious belief that German cars are the pinnacle of automobiles. Maybe it's still true but this is a massive blow to the German auto industry's reputation. The EU is now going to launch their own investigation into VW.

I drove a diesel Audi today on the autobahn. Diesel really is nice.

I don't see the big deal, Global warming scientist cooked the #s and got caught, and other than an atta boy by those in charge nothing happened.

VW cooked their #s on the gas that causes the cooked up global warming and people want to throw them under a VW bus.

99% going to pick up some VW stock. Every panic & huge sell off I pass on (TGT, BP come to mind recently) N E 1 else thinking about a buy?

Didn't work that way. The computer used steering and accelerator inputs to detect when when the car was in an emissions test and reduce performance to meet the emissions guidelines... while increasing performance and emissions when the computer detected was on the road.

Why do you guys hate capitalism so much?

This makes total sense, since the company in question is from that darling of the American left- Europe. With their super awesome European Socialism! And it's clear now that these programs in cars across the world.

So really, let's blame socialism already. German socialism has reared its ugly head in America.

That's exactly what I said. Why aren't they testing the actual emissions of the car during normal driving. They brought this on themselves for being typical government laymen.

Laugh Out Loud at the idea of the Obama Justice Department pursuing criminal charges ...
As we learned with GM and Toyota ...

- GM: Management decision inside US to not recall cars = criminal charges

- Toyota: Management decision outside US to not only not recall cars
... but even keep shipping new vehicles with defective parts = no criminal charges

In fact, Toyota wouldn't admit the "root cause" (purposely sourcing electronics and devkits against their own, certified designs, as well as US DoT regulations) ... until US engineering managers were cross-examined in private lawsuits. At that point, it finally came out, and we found out they were weren't just avoiding recalls (like GM), but continuing to source and ship parts against their own design specs (part of the reason why audits of Toyota's design passed), let alone regulations, in new vehicles.

So ... it really boils down to if VW made the decision inside the US ... or by management outside the US. If outside the US, they're safe, just like Toyota.

I see all sorts of new "management" not just in Mexico thanx to NATFA, but now the Pacific Rim thanx to TPP and this "precedent."

It isn't just an issue in the US, although the US' "supply" of lawyers and continuous, media scrutiny finally uncovered it.

I.e., German future emission standards have long been identified as impossible to meet.

E.g., VW isn't the only company that has been trying to find ways around them.

SIDE NOTE: On the general front, it's even been made worse now that they've knee-jerked on nuclear power too.

This doesn't surprise me one bit. I read at least one article last decade that suggested most German designs would reach the point where they'd get creative with their ECU and similar modules, just to meet German tests.

You're oblivious.
Modern Capitalists can't even follow the regulations they have in place now to keep the public safe, and you somehow think they'll do a better job without regulations, regulating themselves. LOL.

Its as if the entire 1900's never happened in the minds of modern Republicans.

And of course, I was right (article just posted last night)

I predicted this over 5 years ago when Germany announced even tougher initiatives. I figured they couldn't even hit the current ones from the '00s. Sure enough, it's an industry-wise issue ... not just VW.

But I'm just an engineer, neither a politician nor someone who votes party lines. I'm honestly tired of "popular environmentalism," because it just leads to this ... instead of real solutions.

P.S. For those that don't know, Opel is GM's EU brand, with a sub-7% share (#5) in Germany, just barely above Ford.

Of course. Have you ever been wrong?
