So I won't defend Coach Maurer because the team is definitely not good right now but the team she inherited definitely wasn't the caliber of team that we were used to. I think both she and Coach Messer (WBB) should definitely be on the hot seat.
For volleyball specially I think that despite the fact that the sport has grown in popularity that the gaps in the tiers of teams is pretty substantial. Even when the team was successful in the AAC under Coach Dagenais the team never made it out of the regionals and the Big 12 is obviously a much better conference than the AAC in volleyball. Also part of the reason the end of the Dagenais era was so successful was the fact that we had McKenna Melville who was dominant and was so impactful that once she ran out of eligibility that Coach Dagenais decided to retire.
I think on paper Maurer wasn't a bad person to promote but she adds to the growing list of poor choices that Terry has made as AD and it's frustrating that Terry doesn't seem willing to put in the work for all our programs in the same way that Danny White did. I'm not saying to deprioritize football but I liked that Danny didn't accept coaches underperforming in non-revenue sports.

Agreed. Pretty embarrassing that the only Big 12 school in Florida is LAST in the standings for volleyball! Was watching the girls get waxed by BYU the other night and sure enough, Tik Tok was in attendance to grace another program that is hitting skid row.
To be fair, all the players on BYU are married to the same guy so there is that bond.
i wouldn't lump coach messer in with her just yet. messer actually had to rebuild a team that was gutted. they look ok so far this season. maurer's team didn't start bad last season which tells me she inherited some some talent. what worries me is that more she coached them the worse they got. now they are trash.
We'll see how WBB does this year but last year they started like 11-0 after scheduling a bunch of cupcakes and then cratered in conference. Game awareness was really lacking at the end of games as well.
If you look at Dagenais' record he only made the NCAA tournament once prior to Melville/Olson and then made it all 5 years she was here. I do think the fact that volleyball isn't even competitive should make us fire Maurer but I don't know if Terry prioritizes it enough.
look how they started, then they played a bunch of ranked teams to end the season. but at least they beat teams in conference like cincy, kstate, wvu, etc who swept them this year. everyone around them improved, that's on her, not todd.
as for the women's basketball schedule. marquette is a tournament regular. i agree we'll see how the season shakes out.
Honestly, every time I see the title of this thread, I think you're talking about AL.
