KJ

So seriously what happened? Been thinking about it and given the talent difference, field position, RBs averaging like 10 YPC I think that was the worst sporting performance I’ve seen in my 33 years on this earth at any level.

Did he just get some money and coast? Is there something else going on? That wasn’t just knocking off rust or not being live in practice. I didn’t see any signs to suggest things will get better despite people saying he went 6/7. Those were awful passes to wide open WRs. The one deep ball to Kobe was good. Every other pass wasn’t.

I know Gus can be stubborn but I’m sure he’s pissed. I can’t even blame Gus for how things looked given KJs background and I’m sure thinking things will click when he gets out there. He’s gotta seriously be thinking about making a change at QB.

Linebackers

From the beginning I thought Barr was another Pat J. Good at stuffing the gaps a & b but lacking in lateral runs and pass coverage. It has played out. I am a little confused with Pace. He played really good the first 3 games but hasn't been all that since. He looked lazy tonight... like it didn't matter... I have a feeling you will see more of Pierre and Alexander...

Is there a Charlie Taafe out there for Gus?

A legit OC with the freedom to run their system seems like the only way out of this given everything being said all over the board. Problem is the dilemma that this has been tried before with him multiple times at Auburn and already once here at UCF. That’s the frustrating part. But, if it were to happen is there anyone out there realistic? Someone from an FCS ready to prove their concept?

Found this from when Dillingham was hired at Auburn…. Past is prologue…😑

Malzahn admits now that he made a mistake when he listened to the “advice” given to him early during the 2016 season that told him to relinquish offensive play-calling duties — his bread and butter — to then-offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee and, over the better part of the next two seasons, Chip Lindsey. The head coach believes that was proven when he guided Auburn to 586 yards and eight offensive touchdowns in a Music City Bowl rout of Purdue.

Before that game, when Malzahn made the decision that he was going to go back to his comfort zone after a trying 2018 season, the head coach set out to find an offensive coordinator that satisfied three major criteria — good at coaching quarterbacks, understands Auburn’s system and OK with not calling the plays. Once friend and former Ole Miss head coach decided to take the head job at Liberty and Bobby Bentley decided to stay at South Carolina, Dillingham became the choice.

Currently hanging in the gorgeous st. Louis airport. Saw a lady wearing a UCF hat. I proceeded to yell out "go knights! Charge on!" Naturally, the lady was a little caught off guard and then responded back " Go Knights!".

Despite the Gus set back we still have tremendous upside. The fun part is the journey not the destination.

Chin up UCF fans!!! We got this!

***UCF PFF Defense Player Grades - 19-13 loss to Cincinnati***

Rivals has continued its partnership with Pro Football Focus (PFF) which grants me access to their comprehensive analytics and statistical tools.

After each game, two separate analysts grade every player on each play of the game and the two totals are averaged out. Obviously no subjective ranking system is perfect, but I am finding that my real world impressions of a player in a certain game usually reflects the PFF grade.

PFF Grading Scale

90 and above - Elite
80 to 89 - Great
70 to 79 - Good
60 to 69 - Average to Above Average
50 - 59 - Below Average
49 and below - Poor

Season Defensive Grades (by game)

New Hampshire - 90.5
Sam Houston - 72.4
@ TCU - 63.1
Colorado - 67.5
@ Florida - 59.8

National Media Weighs In on Gus

It might be time for UCF to retire the Gus Bus

It's starting to putter out. Gus Malzahn's UCF tenure may have hit a new low Saturday afternoon in a 19-13 home loss against Cincinnati. The same Cinciannti team that went 3-9 last year and won just one game in Big 12 play.

Malzahn is now 9-10 since UCF's move to the Big 12, with a 4-8 showing against conference foes. The Golden Knights weren't expected to compete immediately, but it isn't promising that they're showing signs of regression under a 58-year old head coach.

UCF should be set up well in the Big 12. Its unique position as the conference's only representative in Florida gives it an inherent advantage in talent acquisition. Saturday's result -- and the last month, really -- raise serious doubts about Malzahn's ability to fully capitalize on that.

Being Mid in an NIL era

I was thinking about the past 2 weeks and how things just feel different from a program standpoint. Obviously, UCF has gone through tremendous change in the past 4 years. New AD, HC, a slew of assistants, move to the B12, etc. I know UCF is doing a good job at "keeping up" with the evolution of the NIL landscape. I think we benefit from having a guy like SJ running the Kingdom who is at least aligned and has a good relationship with Gus. It could be a lot worse if we had infighting between NIL and the coaching staff (ask Florida State).

I was watching the beatdown in Gainesville and you could just see Florida had bigger, faster, and stronger guys. Not a huge surprise but to think UCF is going to get there with talent, is sort of a pipe dream with how we collapsed our momentum/hype train. I thought a couple of years ago we might be able to really displace one of the Big 3 if we continued to rise.

At any rate, I pondered the question of how worse off would we really be if we didn't spend NIL money for football?

This isn't a jab at anyone, just more a hypothetical curiosity. If all we will ever be is mid (relative to talent levels), should we just find a good culture coach and get kids that want to showcase their ability somewhere. Surely, P4 football exposure is good enough for some kids. Maybe our recruiting dips to the 50s or so nationally but do we have a better record? Do we find more diamonds in the rough? Do we get better culture kids? I'd imagine we'd have a lot of churn but don't we now? I just don't see us being top 20 in NIL or roster talent. Just being real. Anyways, since it's a bitter week, I figured I'd pose the question here. I imagine the kids playing at service academies aren't getting NIL. Not saying we'd win a conference championship that way but if we're only good for 5-6 wins a year, should we focus on basketball where a guy or two really matters?

I say it is a tie between 2022 Navy (chance to host AAC Title game and possibly return to a NY6 bowl) and 2023 Baylor (35-7 2nd half lead blown), with Colorado as an honorable mention. They all are awful and I don’t believe we were an underdog in any of them. Anyways, this is part of the coping I presume, let me know which one you see as the worst.

POST GAME REACTION w/SOUND from Cincinnati and UCF - Knights lose 3rd straight.

UCF Football was looking at reverse a two game losing streak when they welcomed the Cincinnati Bearcats to the Bounce House, but mental mistakes, turnovers, and untimely execution errors derailed their chances of winning.

The 19-13 result now gives UCF two conference losses as they head into the teeth of a tough stretch of games.

UCF Head Coach Gus Malzahn made a change at QB for this game, and although it provided some spark, the offense still struggled to put points on the board.

WR Kobe Hudson had a solid game, but his focus remains on getting this team focused on winning.

From the Cincinnati perspective, Head Coach Scott Satterfield and his staff knew they had to stop the run and get pressure on the quarterback, which is exactly how things played out.
