Group of Five playoff in the works?

Dennis Dodd:

Former Tennessee football coach Derek Dooley is pitching a Group of Five playoff that would be financially backed by private equity, sources tell CBS Sports.

The concept would address -- if not be motivated by -- disappointment felt by the Group of Five conferences (MAC, Mountain West, Sun Belt, American and Conference USA) over revenue distribution shares under the new College Football Playoff media rights agreement. The average program in those conferences will receive $1.8 million per year in CFP revenue beginning in 2026 under the new deal, up from the current $1.5 million payout.

...

While Dooley's idea is in the development stages, sources stressed that financial involvement would be more than just funding a playoff. In one iteration of the proposal, as described to CBS Sports, eight division champions would play at the end of the regular season for the Group of Five's guaranteed CFP berth. "Significant dollars" would be at stake, according to one source with knowledge of the pitch.

Such an arrangement would require the 62 teams contained in the Group of Five conferences realigning into eight-team divisions.

WOT: Getting Older

I’ve debated posting this thread for a couple weeks, but I need some sage wisdom (and some funny asshole jokes are ok too)

I turned 40 in September last year and I didn’t have a care in the world. My girlfriend and I had just closed on a new house we built. Our blended family couldn’t be happier. Life was great.

Life is still great, but the last couple months some thoughts have started to creep in a little more than I’d like. Thoughts about getting older, and eventually not being here anymore one day.

Now, I know I’m not old by any stretch of the imagination, and even though it’s been a couple years since I’ve gotten an annual check up, I have zero reason to believe anything is wrong with me.

I don’t really know what I’m looking for from you guys, but I guess I’m just wondering how you guys handle getting older and the things that come with it. Does it get easier? Has anyone else gone thru similar. Is this just a midlife crisis?

Regardless of how this thread goes, I just want you all to know I appreciate you, and this outlet we have to bond and argue together.

Charge On

***UCF Baseball Transfer Portal & Recruiting Thread ⚾

Portal opened up last Monday and it will be open for another 35 days. It will be interesting to follow on what players Wallace targets and or if some other P4 top teams target any of our guys.

We saw what NIL $$ can do last year when FSU came to our town to "shop" but I think with a successful season underwraps after Year 1 with Wallace in the Big 12...more suitors will be calling him this year to join us for the upcoming season or two.

Note: UCF hired Wallace last year on June 12th...and he took over a program that just finished another poor season in the AAC with only 3 NCAA Regional Appearances over the last 18 years.

He should be on much stronger ground this summer in targeting portal players.

Which newcomer do you think will be the most impactful/are most excited to see?

A lot of new faces this year with 41 new players between incoming freshman and transfers. I'm most excited for Ethan Barr, feel like LBs have been one of our weaker position groups over the past few years. Seems to be a natural leader being named captain and in charge of the on field signals/plays for the defense which I think is pretty impressive seeing that he got in a little later originally going to Washington before Deboer left. Hopefully he helps improve our LB group greatly this year. I'm really excited for Bredell but don't know how much PT he will get this year as true freshman. Was curious to see some of y'alls opinions

UCF will be the first Big 12 team not named Texas or Oklahoma to finish with a top-20 class since 2016.

Friedman: FACT. How about the Knights? They were already trending toward signing their highest-ranked class ever and then they flipped Rivals250 receiver Jayvan Boggs away from Missouri. Gus Malzahn and his staff easily have the best recruiting class in the Big 12 right now. They hold as many four-star commitments (nine) as the No. 2 and No. 3 teams in the Big 12 combined (TCU and Baylor). The Knights are building a roster that should be able to compete for Big 12 championships in the very near future.

Helwig: FACT. Quite possible. UCF's recent flip of Boggs rocketed its 2025 team ranking into the top 15. The Knights have nine four-star commitments, which is a commanding lead on the rest of their Big 12 brethren (TCU has five four-star commits, Baylor and Colorado have four).

It's believed UCF's class is mostly done, though the staff continues to work targets who have committed elsewhere. If they can hang on to their current group of 20 pledges, plus add a couple more high-profile players, they'll have a great chance to remain in the top 20 come National Signing Day.

In the wake of landing Boggs, who is the highest-ranked commit in UCF history, head coach Gus Malzahn spoke about the recent recruiting successes.

"This place, people wanna come here," Malzahn said. "Everybody can see the future. There's a handful of other guys that I believe they wanna come too. We'll see what happens. We gotta win on the field. We win on the field and the floodgates are gonna open up.

"It's gonna be a lot of fun. But it's an exciting time right now to be a part of our program and to be the head coach."

OT: Special Giveaway in Memory of a Special Girl

Hello Dungeon,

I have not been forthcoming about this news as not many of you have met me in real life and this place is more of a mental escape for me than anything, but here goes: my wife and I lost our 13 month daughter Anastasia a few weeks ago.

Anastasia had Down Syndrome and a heart defect and really had many health battles. She had expected/scheduled open heart surgery in early March that was successful and she did really well with. My wife and I thought she might be out of the weeds. A few weeks after her surgery, I was privileged to take her to a UCF baseball game with my wife and our older daughters ages 6 and 4. Ana was content, the weather was great, the Knights won, the big girls had a great time. I figured it would be the first of many UCF memories as a family of 5.

About 3 weeks later, Anastasia was hospitalized with a virus and ended up on a ventilator. We learned she had a longer term condition called pulmonary hypertension. This started a 30 day hospitalization which included getting off the vent, being moved from PICU to a general floor, getting close to discharge, aspirating, having to be revived after 8 minutes of CPR, back on the ventilator, and eventually recovering yet again and being able to come home. All the hope we had that she was set up for success for awhile post-heart surgery was gone. A week after the 30 day hospital stint, at the end of May, she had to go back and was back on the ventilator again. A new medication and discharge plan was put together after 23 days in the hospital and she was able to come home with us. As y’all might imagine, a lot of mom and dad splitting time at the hospital, grandparents and friends watching the kids, driving back and forth from where we reside in Tavares to APH, etc. Extremely difficult 2 month stretch for all of us.

After 53 out of 60 days in the hospital, we were blessed to have Anastasia home with us the last 4 weeks of her life before losing her at the hospital on a Friday night, July 19. While we knew she was super fragile and that this result was more likely, you never really see it coming, especially when it’s your kid. She looked a little pale, my wife took her to the local hospital and 15 minutes later, I’m getting the call no parent ever wants to get. It happened so fast.

The grief is what you might imagine it to be. A lot of times, it just doesn’t feel real. We have received overwhelming love and support from family, friends, and our church and we are doing better than I thought we would be doing, but we miss Anastasia greatly and I know we will for quite some time and I know the grief will continue to come in waves.

Losing my daughter changes a lot for us. Usually this time of year is the most exciting for me, as it is for a lot of you: the hope and anticipation of a UCF Football season. It’s been the annual thing I have gotten the most excited for since being a freshman back in 2007. While I have posted a thread or two recently and have replied in some other threads…the sorrow of grief is in the background of everything. For my own mental health, I know I’ll be at a lot of games with a good friend of mine that I split season tickets with because…it’s just what I’ve done for years now and even in grief, I know it’s good for me to keep doing it. However, the excitement is definitely subdued and I know I will carry an Ana shaped hole in my heart until we hopefully meet again with God.

I got to take Ana, my wife, and our older two daughters to a baseball game this spring which I’m grateful for. I’m saddened the 5 of us won’t ever get to be in the Bounce House together. I know want to take my wife and our other two daughters to a game together this Fall and let my buddy take another guest with our season ticket.

So the giveaway….I had bought a UCF onesie for Anastasia for the season that she never ended up getting to wear. Part of processing the grief…I would like to gift it to a UCF family that has a young daughter. It is an 18 month onesie, black with the UCF stacked logo. In my opinion, it’s the nicest UCF onesie that I’ve seen them sell (here is a link to see a preview

I would have offered it to friends but seems most of my closest ones either have baby boys or grown up girls.

Anyways, let me know if you fit the description (mom or dad of a 12-18 month old) and I would be happy to do a gift exchange at the home opener. I hope this wasn’t too many details but it does help me with processing my grief to be able to tell people a little bit about sweet Anastasia’s story.

-Eddie

Softball parking pass for sale

I’ve got a softball parking pass I’m looking to sell on here before I put it on the ticket exchange. It’s for the entire season and I’m not really looking to sell individual games yet. Not really sure what a full season is worth though. $1200? $1000? Hit me up if there’s interest. Gonna be on a cruise from Saturday through the 28th so would like to get it settled before I’m out of pocket.

***Camp Update with OC Tim Harris Jr. (recap/story added) ⚔️🏈

We caught up with offensive coordinator Tim Harris, who provided an offensive update after the first full two weeks of preseason camp.

Last Saturday, UCF conducted their second scrimmage. He thought they did a much better limiting the penalties, going from 18 penalties in the first scrimmage to nine in this most recent one.

"That scrimmage was more based on situational things, so we put the balls to different places that you don't get just from a day-to-day practice situation," Harris said. "We were able to see some really good things from the red zone. We got some guys down there that could finish plays and get us in the end zone, so I feel really good about that."

They will be more specific in these next two weeks, such as QBs throwing certain routes to WRs and narrowing down how they want to rotate RBs.

A few guys have been banged up, but Harris seemed please with the overall injury situation.

In this past scrimmage, Riley Trujillo was the only QB that was live. His run game is an asset of his.

Harris was asked about RB Myles Montgomery (Cincinnati transfer) who didn't appear to be full-go on Monday. Harris said Gus Malzahn will always addressed specific injury-related questions but he intimated it wasn't serious.

He was then incredibly complimentary of Montgomery and how he's attacked camp.

"Right now if you had to pick one guy on our offense who's been the MVP through these first two scrimmages, it would be Myles Montgomery. Everything that he does has been 100 miles an hour, his effort level and everything that he does. The little things, the details of how he works, how hard he runs, he finishes runs, breaks tackles.

"So he's done a really good job and put himself in a really good position. But if we had to pick one guy on our offense that we feel brings it every single day, it's Myles."

Establishing the WR rotation is an ongoing process.

"The competition is so close every day," Harris said. "We added some guys that had experience at other places, they've played a lot of football. The competition in that room is just super competitive every single day.

"What it's done is it's made it where you have one guy that may play really good one day, and the next day somebody else takes that step.

"I will say, Kobe Hudson is a guy that over the last couple practices started to do things that we've been pushing him to do, make those contested catches on a consistent basis, be physical, finish in blocks. So he's done that.

"Ja'Varrius Johnson, he's put himself in a position to show, last week, that he can make those downfield plays, too.

"So it's constant movement from that group, and they're putting pressure on each other, and that's exactly how you want it."

Is Jacurri Brown (Miami transfer) contesting for the backup QB spot behind KJ Jefferson?

Harris said he's done a good job, and they continue to stay on him about the "little things" which includes "protecting the ball."

"He's got to do a really good job in that area. But like I told you guys last week, when he was live in that (first) scrimmage, that best shows his game. We didn't have him live the other day, so I think it takes away from who he is.

"But we got to be smart about it. We don't want a guy like that to be live every single scrimmage. So the one scrimmage where he got a chance for his game to really show, you saw exactly what you're getting.

"Now it's about tying up all the loose ends with him, making sure that he understands the details in every part of our offense, and then again, making sure that we do a great job of protecting the ball."

Harris likes the tablet usage, which they got to experiment with during the last scrimmage.

He was very complimentary of freshman QB EJ Colson, who did go live in the first scrimmage. He was initially a Class of 2025 commitment, but reclassified in order to enroll with the 2024 class.

"Everything that we've seen from him is super impressive," Harris said. "He's a super impressive young man. Take the football stuff out of it and you see how he handles himself around the building. You're very impressed with him.

"But what you see when you get out there physically, he's a natural thrower, man. We throw against air and He doesn't miss very much. The ball is consistently exactly where it's supposed to be. That's one of those things that stands out with him.

"You look at him, people talk about his height and all that, but a guy like him who's won at the high school level and won very consistently, you still feel strongly about what they can achieve at this level when you watch him go out there and play and you watch how his teammates respond to him."

To this point in camp, what's something that has exceeded his expectations? Harris said it would be TE depth.

"I think coming out of spring, we had probably two guys that we felt were skilled pass catchers and skilled receiver type guys. But as we go through the summer.. a guy like (Michigan State transfer) Evan (Morris). Evan's done a really good job.

"When we looked at him after spring ball, it was more of an in-line tight end. But he's got an opportunity through the summer and through training camp to show that he can be a receiving threat. Adding him to Randy (Pittman) and Grant (Stevens), those guys that we felt really good in the receiver category, it makes that group very deep and it makes us very well-rounded in what we can do with them."

Harris will coach from the booth during games. He said Gus Malzahn would be the one in charge of helmet communication. He also said the new rules allowing unlimited coaching staffs has freed up the existing analysts to be more hands-on and coach, which is a huge benefit. Under the old rules, analysts weren't allowed to directly interact with players during practice, for instance.

Asked about Kam Martin as RB coach, Harris said Kam is "super impressive" in how he handles himself as a young coach.

"He wasn't a young guy that was in trying to be friends with the players. That's what you get sometimes when you hire young coaches. They want to befriend the players because they don't understand that discipline factor. But you don't get that with Kam. You know, he's a straight up and down guy.

"He handles his business. His players have his respect every single day when he walks in the building. He does a really good job of handling those guys through good and bad."

The biggest question at this point is how this team handles adversity, which they probably won't know until the season starts.
