INTERVIEW: Former UCF Volleyball's Abby Hansen ready to debut with the Orlando Valkyries

The inaugural season of the Pro Volleyball Federation kicks off in January and features the Orlando based Valkyries. For UCF fans, this new league will have a lot of familiarities, including playing home games at UCF's Addition Financial Arena. But, that is not all, as former UCF Knight Volleyball alum Abby Hansen will be on the court as a member of the Valkyries. The action gets started January 26th when Orlando takes on the Atlanta Vibe.

***South Sumter CB George Mullins is a priority for UCF***

s3spbnqjmh4wewvlyp09

South Sumter cornerback George Mullins is one of UCF's Most Wanted in the Class of 2025.

Mullins, who was offered last summer, returned to campus earlier this week along with his friend and teammate, Rashad Johnson.

"I met again with most of the coaches," Mullins said. "Coach (Brian) Blackmon who is recruiting me and Coach Addison (Williams), the DB coach. We're just continuing to build relationships. Just getting close with each other."

Mullins has visited several times over the last year. He was in Orlando last June when he received the offer, returned in August for Knight Splash and also attended two home games.

"I love the atmosphere at UCF," Mullins said. "They really treat the players well. They were showing us a lot of love. I'm treated like I'm a priority."

UCF would love for the South Sumter duo to make up the building blocks of their future defensive backfield. Mullins, who is 6-foot-2 and 170 pounds, is being recruited as a cornerback. He had 27 tackles and two interceptions during his junior season.

"(Coach Addison Williams) said he really loves my length and how I can attack the ball at the high point," Mullins said. "I can play whoever is in front of me."

Other offers include South Florida, Liberty, West Virginia, Oregon State, Western Kentucky, Toledo, Western Michigan, Charlotte, FAU, Michigan State and Mississippi State.

Mullins said he is likely to visit USF again soon and would like to visit Mississippi State this spring.

UCF is definitely one of his top schools though. He especially enjoyed meeting head coach Gus Malzahn during his recent visit.

"I like how he's shifted the program," Mullins said. "UCF is definitely going to be something special."

OT: If you needed one more reason not to like cable companies

In a nutshell, the FTC wants to make it as easy for consumers to cancel a subscription as it is to sign up for one. If you can click an icon on a website to sign up, then you should be able to cancel the same way, without having to call their customer service, go through a bunch of high pressure sales pitches, etc. Cable companies are whining that customers might suffer because they don't actually know what they want.

***UCF Transfer Portal Update - Players to Watch***

UCF's spring semester begins Monday, but that's not a hard deadline for transfers to enroll. There is some leeway, especially with grad transfers.

In the past week, UCF picked up three important commitments: QB KJ Jefferson (Arkansas) on Monday, S Deshawn Pace (Cincinnati) on Wednesday and LB Jesiah Pierre (Texas Tech) on Friday.

UCF is still actively recruiting the LB, DB, WR and OL positions.

ECU CB Antione Jackson is committing to a school today, per his social media. UCF is one of his top schools. Mississippi State is also in there. The former four-star prospect actually signed with Miami coming out of Dillard High School last year, but asked out of his NLI and ended up at ECU. I'm not exactly sure of the circumstances. There was buzz Miami could re-recruit him this time around, though I'm not sure that happened.

As a freshman at ECU, Jackson played in 10 games and started three. He finished with 19 tackles, three breakups and one interception, which was a pick-six. Final PFF season grade was 66.3.

UCF signee Jaylen Heyward tweeted this yesterday:

I haven't heard anything definitive, but seems like one to watch.

Other players I'm monitoring:

Idaho LB Xe'ree Alexander did indeed visit UCF during the middle part of last week. He then took a quick trip to Michigan State before returning home to Seattle.

He also has offers from Washington, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Oregon State and several others. He has family in Florida, which could be a plus.

During his first season with the FCS Vandals, Alexander recorded 74 tackles, four TFLs, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. He would have three years of eligibility remaining.

===

Ohio State freshman WR Bryson Rodgers also visited UCF in the middle part of the week. He played in two games this past season, preserving a redshirt. All the buzz about his visit was extremely positive and it is believe he will announce a decision soon.

==

Ole Miss (and former Rockledge/Auburn) DB/LB Ladarius Tennison. He would be a huge pickup. I posted about him on Friday:

==

Virginia Tech (and former Georgia Southern) CB Derrick Canteen is also in the mix. He played in all 13 games at VT this past season as a regular contributor. He finished with a season PFF grade of 65.8. He was one of Georgia Southern's top players in 2022.

He is also considering Cincinnati.

==

UNLV (and former LSU) LB Zavier Carter. He was a former four-star in the 2021 class. He played sparingly at LSU and transferred to UNLV this past season. At UNLV in 11 games, Carter was a reserve and finished with 14.0 tackles and 2.0 sacks. According to PFF, Carter saw an average of 20 snaps per game in the first five games, then his reps heavily decreased in the latter half of the season. Finished with a very high grade of 83.6.

==

Temple OT Victor Stoffel. A native of Sweden, the experienced starter is down to UCF, Cal and Texas A&M.

Stoffel has been at Temple since 2019 and was their starting right tackle. He earned a 73.6 season grade according to PFF. He missed the first five games of 2022 due to injury - his first game back was Temple's 70-13 loss at UCF (he graded at 52.8 in that game).

Texas A&M just added commits this weekend from Derrick Graham (Troy) and Ar'maj Reed-Adams (Kansas). I thought UCF might have been in the mix for Graham (he's from the Orlando area), but he apparently visited Pitt prior to A&M.

==

Florida OG Richie Leonard. Originally from Cocoa, just hit the portal officially on Sunday. Grad transfer. He started 12 games at left guard this past season.

Miami seems like they'll be in the mix too.

One way or another transfer waivers are going away

A multi-state lawsuit was recently filed challenging the NCAA's policy on transfer waivers due to several not being granted. The lawsuit seeks to grant unlimited transfers, eliminating the need for waivers.

The MAC commissioner says there is also proposed legislation on the table that would eliminate waivers entirely, making it impossible to transfer a second time (even as a grad transfer) without sitting out a year.

Either way, transfer waivers may not be around next year. Either the rules will get tighter, or they will disappear.

OT: CBS and WBD (TNT, TBS, HBO) to Possibly Merge

Login to view embedded media
"Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav met with his Paramount Global counterpart Bob Bakish on Tuesday to discuss a potential merger of the companies, Axios reported Wednesday. Such a move would, among other things, put CBS Sports and the Turner Sports networks under the same umbrella for the first time. Though it is sometimes assumed that CBS and Turner are corporate siblings due to their existing relationship on the NCAA men’s basketball tournament — and a prior partnership on the Winter Olympics — they have always been separate entities.

In addition to the sports implications, a combination of the two companies would result in CBS News and CNN being under the same umbrella, to say nothing of entertainment properties MTV, TBS, TNT, Comedy Central. It would also presumably result in the combination of streaming services Max and Paramount+
."

Even ESP5N is admitting to the Stupidity of the "P5" label.

I literally look down on anyone using the P5 or P4 phrase, as a complete utter worthless moron.

The term "Power 5" has been a source of confusion for years when applied to men's college basketball. There are six major conferences in hoops, but because there are five in college football, the label gets tossed around in both sports.

Next season, however, we will at last have a true Power 5 in college basketball. The Pac-12 is dissolving, and 10 of the league's 12 teams will join different major conferences for 2024-25. (Of course by then college football fans will be talking correctly about a "Power 4." Cross-sport confusion will continue. So be it.)

With a new alignment of Division I's top basketball conferences just around the corner, let's forecast what the pecking order might look like within this emerging Power 5. Which conferences stand to benefit from all of this realigning?"

We here at "2025 Realignment" headquarters have already discussed this matter with reference to the ACC, so we'll be brief.

Imagine that the forthcoming 2025 alignment had instead been instituted prior to the 2018-19 season and that the Pac-12 has been gone now for a little more than five years. In this scenario, SMU, California and Stanford have been members of an 18-team ACC all this time.

If this were the case, we would have seen the ACC rank No. 5 out of the five major conferences in four of the past five full seasons. In fact, the ACC would currently be on a streak of four straight last-place finishes dating to 2019-20. So far this season, the league would again be a distant fifth behind the other major conferences.

The Big 12 is likely to look as mighty as ever

At the other extreme of the major-conference rankings we find the Big 12, which has claimed the No. 1 spot at KenPom in eight of the past 10 seasons. For such a powerful league to add a new member such as perennially strong Houston, for example, would appear to be a case of the rich getting richer.

That's not a bad summary, all things considered. To be sure, the Big 12's overall strength will likely take a small hit when, in effect, the league loses Oklahoma and Texas in exchange for gaining not only UH, BYU, Cincinnati and UCF (all of which joined up this season) but also Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah (all due to arrive next season).

Still, if we proactively slapped a Big 12 label on next season's teams right now, the "new" 16-team league would retain its perch as the strongest conference in the nation today by a healthy margin.

UCF WR Coaching Candidate Hotboard

Dameyune Craig

Parts unknown (unemployed)

The former Texas A&M receivers coach is on the wish list for a lot of fans after not being retained by new Aggies coach Mike Elko. Craig is an elite recruiter and has been around the SEC landscape as a coach for over a decade. The previous six seasons he has led an impressive group of wide receivers with the Aggies including 3-star Ainias Smith (2019), 4-star Demond Demas (2021), 5-star Evan Stewart (2022) and 4-star Chris Marshall (2022). He also earned the commitment of Cam Coleman for the 2024 cycle who decommitted following the termination of coach Jimbo Fisher.

Kodi Burns

New Orleans Saints

The Fort Smith,Ark., native played his college ball at Auburn and was one of the most dynamic quarterbacks as a senior at Northside High School. Burns is in his second season with the Saints, which keeps him from having to worry about recruiting and the day-to-day duties of a college assistant. Luring an NFL assistant away for a potential homecoming with Gus will be a tall task. His receivers currently average 10.4 yards per catch which is in the bottom 10 among NFL franchises. They also rank in the bottom half in explosiveness with only 45 receptions exceeding 20 yards or more.

Craig Stutzmann

Texas State

One of the top offensive minds, Stutzmann’s group of receivers made their mark in the up-tempo, high-scoring Texas State offense in 2023. The Bobcats, who ranked 28th in the country in passing offense, featured 3 different receivers with 55 or more catches. Texas State also broke the program’s overall record for passing yards in a season. He was also one of six finalists for FootballScoop’s National Wide Receivers Coach of the Year. He also helped Hobert get named to the Biletnikoff Award watch list. A Hawaiian, Stutzmann coached Marcus Mariota in high school and makes $150k per year.

Ike Hilliard

Parts unknown (unemployed)

Former SEC great and 12-year National Football League veteran served as interim co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach at Auburn after the dismissal of Bryan Harsin. An All-American at Florida in 1996, Hilliard spent the previous 11 seasons coaching in the NFL, most recently as wide receivers coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Hilliard brought a degree of professionalism to the staff at Auburn and was a tireless recruiter.

Bobby Bentley

Battle Ground Academy (TN) HS

On Monday, Bentley was named head coach at BGA in Franklin, TN. The 2023 UCF analyst, who won four straight South Carolina high school state titles at James F. Byrnes from 2002-05, was named coach after a nationwide search. Bentley, 55, takes over a program that went 5-6 in 2023 with a TSSAA Division II-AA first-round playoff loss to Lausanne. That came a season after going 1-9.

Jeff Scott

Parts unknown (unemployed)

Before compiling a lowly 4-26 head coaching record over a three-year span at cow u, Jeff Scott served as one of the ACC’s most established wide receiver mentors for 12 seasons at Clemson. Scott mentored several Pro-Bowl caliber NFL pass catchers, including the likes of Sammy Watkins, DeAndre Hopkins, Hunter Renfrow, Tee Higgins, and Mike Williams.

I am tried of writing...

Gus is hiring Georgia Tech's Josh Crawford, who coached UCF backup Xavier Williams as Assistant head coach/co-offensive coordinator at Colquitt County HS in 2020.

If you can't beat 'em, buy 'em. Dude makes only $250k.

I was going to write about more candidates. I just got wore out. The amount of difference Crawford made in one season at Georgia Tech is immeasurable. He is an obvious choice. I am certain Will Healy got Gus in contact with Crawford (Healy knew Crawford from recruiting), and Gus interviewed him at the coaching convention.

Other candidates included former Oregon WR coach Scott Frost, West Virginia WR coach Bilal Marshall, Boston College WR coach Darrell Wyatt, and former UCF quarterback MaKenzie Milton.

Question about B12 b-ball standings

ESPN currently shows Texas Tech in first place in the standings. I know conference record is weighted first, but why is TT at 3-1 in conference and 14-3 overall ahead of Kansas at 3-1 and 15-2. Is espn just showing it in random order or is there a tie breaker that causes Tt to be in first?

Same thing with Houston - they are tied with 6 other teams at 2-2 but have a better overall record than all of them but they are listed towards the bottom of the other 2-2 teams?
