COLUMN: UCF Football Has a Long Climb Ahead

Look, I’ll be honest: It’s been a draining few days at the office. The time change means it’s getting darker earlier, each day. The weather has been cold and wet outside. The UCF Men’s Basketball team lost a heartbreaker against Ole Miss on Sunday. Things haven’t been the best. In short, I’m cranky. So, reader beware, this isn’t going to be a feel-good article from “Wild Bill.” Walk away now if you are looking to read a puff piece about the Knights, today. It’s time to take a reflective look at where we are.

OT: SEC Schedule Release

On ESPN now. Let the love fest begin.

SEC gives Florida a break and gives them a bye week before playing UCF.

I expect the Big XII to give us the same treatment. Florida opens vs. Miami, Samford, Texas A&M and travels to Mississippi State before we head to the swamp. I don't think Billy will be playing for his job by then but if UCF beats the Gators his seat gets very warm if they are 2-2 or worse heading into our game.

Around the Kingdom - Portal Madness Season

Join Eric Lopez and Trace Trylko as they debate some of the current topics surrounding UCF Athletics.

In this episode, the guys talk about the dreaded transfer portal, where UCF is currently searching for help at multiple positions. Is this the most important priority for UCF right now with everything else on the calendar? Also, how much do visits and NIL have to do with the decisions?

Plus: The White Horse Bowl, the Coach that wasn't, Men's hoops comes up short, and E-Lo tells you how to really make an impression.

the haves and have nots...

Found this paragraph while googlin':

There is still quite a buzz concerning the proposal made a few days ago from the NCAA president of all people that would essentially allow the more powerful schools in division one athletics to form their own league with their own rules which would allow them to directly pay at least half of their athletes a sum of $30,000 a year. Additionally, the proposal would allow these schools to offer unlimited educational benefits and to enter into NIL deals with student athletes directly. The letter noted that 91 division one schools had a budget of over $50M while another 259 schools spent less than $50M on their athletic programs. The schools that spend the most would then have their own league and change the way college athletics now does business.

UCF hosts unbeaten Ole Miss in a non-conference showdown Sunday at 4 p.m. inside Addition Financial Arena.

The Rebels, an SEC program in their first season under head coach Chris Beard, offer a preview of the caliber of opponents the Knights will soon encounter in the Big 12.

"I think it's going to be very similar," UCF head coach Johnny Dawkins said. "And I hope that atmosphere is the way we would like for it to be as well, to complement the type of opponents we're going to face going forward. That's going to be very important.

"I see this as an opportunity for us to kind of see where we are at this stage. This is still early December. We have a lot of room to grow, like all teams do. And we're gonna take it as an opportunity to continue to work and see where we are and continue to grow."

Ole Miss is 8-0. Notable wins have come against Memphis (80-77), NC State (72-52) and Temple (77-76).

"They're a good team," Dawkins said. "You can see they're coming together. You can see their culture starting to grow under Coach Beard. I think they're a team that's very disciplined. I think they're efficient. Look at their numbers. They're a very efficient team. And that's on the offensive and defensively. I think like all of his teams, they really get after it.

"They contain you, keep you in front. And they have two guys in the low post that are difference makers around the basket and (Jamarion) Sharp and (Moussa) Cisse."

Ole Miss has a trio of excellent guards on averaging over 15 points a game: Allen Flanigan (18.0 ppg), Matthew Murrell (16.0 ppg) and Jaylen Murray (15.3 ppg).

"They are terrific," Dawkins said. "(Matthew) Murrell can really shoot the ball. (Jaylen) Murray, he's an excellent point guard. And (Allen) Flanigan, he's all-around good player, perimeter or inside. So those are tough covers. Our guys have to follow our game plan, work hard and stay disciplined in what we're doing defensively. "

Dawkins is quite familiar with Moussa Cisse, who was recently cleared to play and has appeared in their last two games. UCF faced the 7-footer last season when he played for Oklahoma State and the two teams squared off in the Bahamas. During that game, Cisse scored 14 points with 14 rebounds, six blocks and two steals. UCF won in overtime, 60-56.

"Terrific player," Dawkins said. "He has an amazing defensive presence around the basket. He's long, he's active. He blocks shots, he changes shots, changes ends of the floor really well. Really good at catching lobs. He's a terrific player.

"That's a great piece that they added. And I think it helps their depth on the interior with (Jamarion) Sharp, who is 7-5. I hadn't seen a player like him since Tacko (Fall). They have an unbelievable front. Front line of guys with experience and talent."

Ole Miss coach Chris Beard is a proven winner with a 245-98 record as a head coach since 2012. He took Texas Tech to the 2019 Final Four before moving on to Texas in 2021. He was fired during his second season in Austin following a domestic violence arrest. Charges were later dropped and he was picked up this past offseason by Ole Miss.

"I know he's a terrific coach," Dawkins said. "I can tell by how his team plays and their level of discipline. Also their level of energy and effort when they're playing. I think it's a heck of a reflection of him. He's done a great job in his career, wherever he's been. And so I know they're going to be a team that's very disciplined and play very good defense. And offensively, I think they're going to be a team that really knows how to space the floor and play to their strengths."

***UCF Transfer Portal Recruiting Update - Grayson McCall Watch***

IMG_0794-2.jpg

As you all know, we're officially on Grayson McCall Watch. The Coastal Carolina QB spent Friday and the first part of Saturday at NC State. He then flew to Orlando Saturday night for his UCF OV, departing Monday morning.

By now, you've certainly seen the photos of him briefly attending UCF's Sunday afternoon basketball game vs. Ole Miss. McCall along with his mother and brother arrived to UCF Arena about halfway through the first half. Darin Hinshaw and Kam Martin were among the coaches that came with them, then a few minutes later Gus and Kristi arrived. They might have been there around 20-30 minutes in total. Everybody was leaving at halftime, then Terry Mohajir came over to presumably give his pitch.

NC State apparently felt good about McCall's visit. UCF felt the same way. As of earlier today, both schools were still waiting for his decision.

Which one will he pick? I have no idea. Both schools expect a decision "soon" but I haven't heard of a specific time frame. Given the importance of the QB1 position (make no mistake, McCall is QB1 the moment he arrives on either campus), one would think McCall knows he needs to make decision very quickly so his next school can build on the positive publicity to continue building their transfer class.

I have heard both staffs were making plans to visit with him in Myrtle Beach at some point later this week, though one would think he might have a decision by then? I'd be surprised if this drags out any longer than Tuesday, but we'll see.

Is Javon Baker returning to UCF? He seemed to insinuate that's a distinct possibility with his latest tweet:

"Yall in trouble IF everybody in this offense come back for another year!"

As I've said since the portal opened, there has been confidence that RJ Harvey and Kobe Hudson are returning for another year. They've also been telling people that is their intention. Javon Baker has not committed one way or another. His NFL Draft grade probably isn't as high as he'd like to declare. He has been vocal about wanting a big NIL payday, but he may not have much leverage since he's already transferred and is not yet a graduate.

Could Javon's tweet also have to do with the timing of McCall's deliberation?

Then again, Baker later responded to a fan who said please make it happen: "Gotta tell the collective that, not me."

I messaged every known official visitor and only got a response from one. The one I communicated with on Sunday said he'd do an interview on Monday but I haven't been able to reach him yet.

Between the two weekends of visits, I'm a little surprised there haven't been any commits yet but a lot of transfers are enjoying the process and taking their time. On a national level, there hasn't been a huge number of commits though. There will be one more visit weekend and then visits in early January before the semester starts. At some point, guys will have to start making decisions.

A Dungeon member chatted up one of the visitors at MCO on Sunday while in the TSA line. He can elaborate on this story if he wants to, maybe it's best not to name the player (I'm going to refrain) but he was incredibly candid - he said he loved his visit, but his decision basically comes down to how much NIL $$$ UCF can offer vs. the other schools recruiting him.

For the most part, that's pretty much what is happening during this transfer cycle. Every player has an asking price (how they came up with that number I guess can vary). I'm told UCF has a general idea of how much the player wants and if it's in the ballpark of what the Kingdom can afford, UCF will bring them in for a visit. Nobody wants to waste each other's time otherwise.

Gus Malzahn straight up said this was the case during his most recent press conference:

"You have to have the money to compete... Especially for a transfer, the first thing they want to talk about it is collective and NIL. Even before you get into the offense, defense, development and all that. That's just the new age of college football and you have to have the money resources to compete. The Big 12 definitely helps us, but more than anything it's to be able to compete financially."

The Kingdom doesn't have infinite resources so the coaching staff has to do a great job of finding the right type of player that will be a fit. Some SEC schools can throw a bag at a bunch of guys and then let practice sort everything out. UCF has to be more selective - if somebody is going to get something, they should be starter material.

Early Signing Day for HS recruits is next Wednesday, Dec. 20. That seems awfully late. But that's the third Wednesday of December, same as it's been. UCF will actually be in Tampa for the Gasparilla Bowl on that day. We haven't gotten anything official yet, but UCF may do their signing day press conference in Tampa. It's a logistical hassle for everyone.

Honestly, high school recruiting is 95% done at most schools. December is now almost exclusively about transfer portal recruiting. They should probably push up ESD even earlier just to get that out of the way so December's focus can be on portal and bowl games.

JUCO LB Keaton Thomas committed to Baylor during his weekend OV. He had said he might visit UCF this week.

San Diego State OL Cade Bennett committed to TCU. He had previously said a UCF visit was a possibility.
