ECU Loss Cost UCF Tens of Millions

Yesterday's loss might be the financially most significant blunder in Knight football history. With a victory at ECU, it is estimated UCF could have benefited from $20 million in media coverage and greater brand awareness by hosting Cincinnati on Gameday at the Bounce House. The impact should not be understated. It's not simply about winning the conference. In the grand scheme, securing Gameday is far more important than winning the AAC. Consider, the opportunity loss is greater than the annual fundraising of the Shareholder Society.

[SIAP] The Athletic: Big XII ‘leftovers’ enjoy being better than TX, OK (Paywall)

I won't quote the whole article, obviously, but some 'nuggets' for those who don't have a subscription.

Mandel’s Final Thoughts: Big 12 ‘leftovers,’ enjoy being better at football than Texas and Oklahoma

QUOTES:
1. Oklahoma and Texas decided in 2021 they were going to leave the Big 12 in 2025 ... But a funny thing happened on the way to 2025. The teams they jilted got better than them at football.
2. ... it sure looks like we’re going to have a second consecutive Big 12 championship game with neither the Sooners nor Longhorns.
3. In fact, the Big 12 feels a lot like it did back in 2014, when Trevone Boykin-led TCU and Bryce Petty-led Baylor finished as 11-1 co-champions who barely missed the College Football Playoff ... Those 2014 Big 12 teams were fun to watch ...

[SIAP] The Athletic: UCF #15 Transfer Class (#1 G5) According to 247

I did spend some time doing due dilligence searching if someone else already posted it, but I didn't see it, not even on the kiddie board. SIAP if I missed it.

I'll quote some of the UCF portions for those without the subscription.

QUOTE: _'Q: Which teams fared the best... in the transfer portal?... Q: Which transfers... result in the most significant impact in 2022 in the G5?
Let’s start with teams. UCF is undoubtedly a winner from the transfer portal again. Gus Malzahn has quickly turned it into a portal destination for Power 5 players. The Knights have added nine transfers since late November, with seven coming from P5 schools and six of those from the SEC. That includes Kobe Hudson, who was Auburn’s leading receiver last year; Kemore Gamble, who was Florida’s top tight end... Losing quarterback Dillon Gabriel to Oklahoma was a major blow, but Malzahn added John Rhys Plumlee, the versatile former Ole Miss starting quarterback. It’s the 15th-best transfer class in the nation in 247Sports’ rankings and No. 1 in the G5...
It’s also worth crediting the G5 schools that have the fewest outgoing transfers...
As for the players... in the G5, let’s start with two of those quarterbacks I mentioned. UCF is pretty loaded at the offensive skill positions after getting banged up in 2021. It just needs a quarterback who can take advantage of that. Plumlee will have to win the job, but his dual-threat ability could make him a perfect fit for Malzahn’s offense, something Gabriel never quite was before his injury. (Gabriel will likely make a major impact at Oklahoma, as well.) Hudson should also be a top receiver for the Knights.'_

EDIT: Latest 247Sports actually says #16 Transfer Class ...

Also as part of the mailbag story was FCS NDSU and the MAC. I couldn't resist adding my $0.02 about UCF's mistake in the comments, which I snapshotted and shared on Twitter ... (dig at S. Florida as well).

OT: As Knight fans, we are all frustrated, but look at the bright side....

...at least you're not me:

-Been up since Friday with no sleep.
-Got one deadline done and sent over to the P.E. to be signed and sealed.
-Got both bid deadlines done.
-Working on a re-submittal to a local municipality only because the plans reviewer doesn't know the code and doesn't know how to read plans.
-Both my teams lost (UCF and Tampa) and now I have to figure out how to spin it in front of hostile Gator fans at the office Monday AM.
-I have another hot deadline to meet on Monday night/Tuesday AM so a developer can get his building permit submitted so his funding can go through while his lower interest rate is still locked in.
-If I am lucky, I will be able to sleep for about 4-5 hours before putting in another 20 hour day.

UCF Fast & Slow - Arrrggh I Shit My Pants Edition

WTF did i just watch. Did we really just get dominated by ECU? I knew going into this ECU was a solid team and would give us their best shot but i figured after the streak we have been on we figured shit out enough to handle this one. Worst case maybe we would lose close on some bullshit but i dont think anyone had 34-13. We stopped ourselves early (drops, int, fumble) and then we couldn't force a punt and the game got away from us. We are not a quick strike type offense, if we have no threat of a run our offense is useless so we cannot afford to get down big and into pass only situations which is basically what happened here.

UCF Fast: Easy write up here, hard to give any Fast's after that performance. Boomer did his job, hit two nice FGs. Hunter had some moments inside but everything else was pretty damn awful and disappointing considering how this team looked the last few weeks.

UCF Slow: Pretty much everyone can get this for one reason or another but i will pick a quick few...
  • Jaylon Griffin: Why he is even in the game with a healthy Baker, Hudson and ROK i have no idea but that was just a brutal drop early in the game. That is either a TD or we have the ball inside the 20. Completely changes the game. I feel like every time i see this kid in the game he is underwhelming. Must practice great to get this chance but come on now Gus, he isnt ready. Got to catch that ball. Biggest play of the game in my opinion.

  • ROK: No touches in the 1st half which was weird but then dropped TWO balls at least in the 2nd half. How do you drop a shovel pass? It is literally a 1 ft throw. The other drop on that screen he had a perfect set up, may have been a huge play. ROK is too good of a player to play like he did tonight.

  • Entire Defense: I assume JJB got injured? Only shows him registering 1 tackle, maybe he went out early and that explains some of the issues but we made Ahlers look like Montana tonight. Our DBs were getting torched and the angles we were taking were hard to understand at this level of football. The safeties in particular were just taking awful angles in run support. How many times did we have the RB pinned down and he could bound outside when we had a guy on that edge. I don't understand what we were doing. The fact we couldn't force ECU to punt one time in the first 3 quarters is just unforgivable. We made it way to easy. And again no turnovers and no QB pressure. They picked up our blitzes perfectly. We really miss that game changing defensive player. Damn Randy for taking Bethune, games like this show how much that hurts. I thought we had a stable of DBs but the WR of ECU outplayed us tonight.

  • J Rich Two Touches: Can someone explain to me what Gus is doing with JRich? He is our most dynamic player and it is like he isn't even on the team? Why are we not using him? He is avg like 9 yards a touch. Even at the end when we were just throwing the ball to the backs, he gives us the best chance to break something of the entire group. Maybe he has other issues keeping him off the field but my eyes are not lying to me. When he touches the ball he is explosive, why are we not using him? Maybe someone can ask Gus that question? We scored 1 TD so it isn't like not playing him is working out.

  • JRP: QBs always take more of the blame and more of the praise then they deserve and i feel like that is the case again here. JRP was not getting any help from the WRs or the Defense today. Those drops noted above were brutal. Two of his picks were on him, he shouldn't have thrown either ball. The fumble is tough to shit on him for because he made a great play to get the first down, shit luck on that one, absolute drive killer though. Regardless he has to take care of the ball better. I am not saying any state secrets here, JRP is not a great pocket passer and he isn't going to take over the game, he is dependent more on the rest of the team playing well to make it all work. When we get into holes and the defense can just sit back in their lanes JRP starts seeing ghosts.
I thought our offense looked good to start this game. I really think if we didn't stop ourselves in the first half we would have scored more in that first half and the whole game flow would have been different but say what you want about the offense, at the end of the day we lost this game because the defense couldn't get off the field. The defense lost us this game. How many 10 play 8 minute scoring drives can we give up in one game? I get it that the defense has picked the offense up earlier in the year and the offense couldn't do that today but the defense is the reason we lost today. It is just super disappointing to see us take this kind of step backwards especially in a week where we are heading into a sold out huge match up with Cincy. We totally wet farted the buzz for that game. The only good news is that ECU already has two losses and we still play Tulane and Cincy. We just have no margin of error now. Got to win both of those games if we want any shot at conference title. ECU still plays Tulane and Cincy, they play like they did tonight maybe they steal one of those. I expect us to play Cincy tough next week, as long as the players keep their heads and realize everything they want is still in front of them. We will all be happy again if we can do that next week, just stinks the build up for the game is diminished due to bed shitting at EC facking U. Go Knights!!!

We sucked as much as Carolina BBQ

No juice, dry and bitter. That's what we were left with after tonight's disgrace. Just gross, like Carolina BBQ. As I said in another thread, I'm glad my friend didn't live to see this game. I'm glad I didn't spend the money on travel and tickets to go see this shit. What a putrid effort from the OL, WR corps, and defense.

We still control our destiny for the conference, but the level of effort and focus needs to improve to be able to even hope to win it.

Games like this make me question renewing my tickets
