***Travis Williams' defense boasts big-time performance vs. SMU (interview) ⚔🏈

UCF's defense continues to excel.

SMU might have been the biggest challenge to date. The Mustangs came into the game averaging 38.5 points per game and quarterback Tanner Mordecai was the nation's third-leading passer.

In the 41-19 UCF victory on Wednesday, SMU did get some yards but failed to sustain drives against Travis Williams' defense. SMU scored a touchdown and two field goals in the first half and would have been shut out in the second half if not for a garbage-time touchdown against UCF's reserves with no time remaining on the clock.

Recap from the interview:

T-Will was proud of their response after SMU saw some early success moving the ball. He said it's one of the fastest-paced offenses he's seen. That was an adjustment.

He acknowledged some of the P.I. penalties might have been questionable, but they've got to do a better job coaching them up to prevent penalties.

Mordecai was 0-10 on third-down passing.

On the safeties, Divaad Wilson was No. 2 on the team in production points. Praised Koby Perry for stepping up. He loves football and it was his time to shine. Koby is a team guy. They named him their Defensive Player of the Week. His mom passed away this summer. He's been through a lot.

On Quadric Bullard, he'll be "good to go" and "ready for the next game."

SMU had max protection so it was difficult to get to the quarterback.

Corey Thornton was the Special Teams Player of the Week because he helped down Andrew Osteen's punts inside the five.

Said Demari Henderson and Kam Moore earned the right to play. Says Kam is "very smart" with a "high football IQ." He knows the playbook.

Jamaal Johnson also got in there vs. SMU. He has a "bright future." Has a motor and reminds T-Will of a "young Josh Celiscar." His mom has raised him right.

Said the hurricane did interrupt the flow of preparations, especially when some guys were without power, etc.

Jarvis Ware is doing well, coming off the injury. Very smart. They need him to come on.

The safety was huge energy for the whole team.

I asked about the status of Keenan Hester. He has "some things going on" and it's not up to him to talk about.

They were spending Thursday as a self-scout. Will hit some schools for recruiting on Friday and get back to work for Temple prep on Saturday.

He talked about his family - I commented that I saw them all at the game wearing matching outfits.

Landon Woodson, who had to retire from playing, is a student defensive assistant. He's wearing the orange polo on the sideline and helps signal calls.

🇺🇸 AAC Revenge Tour: Path to the AACCG ⚔️

Here is this week's slate as we Strive for Five and close out our time as a proud member of the American.

Week 6 schedule.jpeg

Houston at Memphis (-2.5)

Houston already with 1 conference loss and the Tigers undefeated in conference play at 2-0 (4-1 overall) I’d love for the Cougars to mar the Tigers record. Memphis will make sure to give us a nice parting gift when we stroll down Beale St.

cows at Cincinnati (-27.5)

usf is trash but wouldn’t it be something if they put something together? Bearcats are 1-0 in conference (4-1 overall) have the same record as us. Hopefully we can see some tendencies on tape. I wanna believe Mordecai will be the best QB we’ll face all year but Cincy is a better T.E.A.M. Looking forward to scouting Cincy and Jeff Scott crumble. I want him on the sideline for the War On I-4.

East Carolina at Tulane (-3.5)

Pretty excited about this game. I think this is a matchup of two AACCG dark horses and both of these teams will play spoiler to one of the departing NEW Big 12 members. Green Wave is undefeated in conference play 1-0 and the Pirates are 1-1 having lost to Navy 🥴 Would love our C-USA brethren to do us a solid and give the Crescent City an L. Both of these teams on the road will be tough for us.

Tulsa at Navy (+5.5)

If there are two teams I am looking forward to not having to play anymore it’s these two. Mind you Gus started conference play 0-1 last year with Garbage Gatewood in Annapolis. Tulsa will be a G5 cellar dweller for the foreseeable future and that warms my heart. Tulsa is 0-1 in conference play while Navy is 1-1. I’d like to see the Midshipmen take an L here since we play them later in the year.

We control our future but calling for Houston, ECU, Cincy exposed, Tulsa wins to help guide us into the AACCG. Take care of Temple for 4 quarters and bolster some confidence for our first TRUE road test outside of the state in Greenville.

Should both squads take care of business we’re headed into Homecoming ranked against a ranked Cincy. That stadium will be mayhem.

Lot of football left. This is just a peek at this weekend.

FÜCK ‘EM WE BALL.

Speechless ... (AAC projections)

UCF is the "most overrated" team in the AAC.

Most overrated team
UCF: I love Gus Malzahn, and I love what George O'Leary, Scott Frost and Josh Heupel did before him -- with the program. But the AAC has gotten deeper. UCF doesn't have the soldiers to keep up this season (get back to me when the Knights go to the Big 12), while Cincinnati and Houston are simply too good. -- Dennis Dodd (also Shehan Jeyarajah, Jerry Palm)

OT: Mick Jagger is a switch hitter?

News to me.

A new book claims Mick Jagger had ongoing sexual relationships with two other members of the Rolling Stones.

In her new book, The Stone Age: Sixty Years of the Rolling Stones, author Lesley-Ann Jones suggests Jagger had affairs with bandmates Keith Richards and Mick Taylor in addition to other notable male celebs and musicians, reports the British tabloid the Daily Mail.

2013 Auburn vs. 2022 UCF

QB Play

Nick Marshall
152 passing ypg
82 rushing ypg
143 QBR

John Rhys Plumlee
(Though 5 games)
229 passing ypg
86 rushing ypg
138 QBR

Dark Side of Gus Malzahn

When you think about Auburn's 2013 BCS National Championship run, you think about all the iconic individual plays made by Marshall. What you don't think about is all the dirty work put in by Tre Mason.

FYI, Gus is not afraid to run a player to death to win a football game. Despite having two other future NFL backs (Cameron Artist-Payne and Corey Grant) on the bench, Gus ran Tre Mason 317 times for 1,816 yards in 2013. Auburn led the nation in rushing at 328 ypg, but it took a toll on Mason, who now suffers from CTE: https://hiphopdx.com/news/id.67067/...suspected-cte-gets-ignored-by-michael-strahan

(In 2017, Kerryon Johnson suffered an injury on his 30th carry with Gus trying to run up the score against Saban and uat late in the fourth quarter. It cost Gus an SEC title and CFP berth because Auburn lost to Georgia in the SEC championship game two weeks later. In a bizarre situation similar to Mikey Keene's, running back Kamryn Pettway, the 2016 SEC Player of the Year, chose to sit out most of 2017 season.)

For further comparison, Auburn averaged 52 rushes per game in 2014. UCF averages 48 totes per game. Gus has done a much better job of spreading the ball around. UCF doesn't have a Tre Mason, but Auburn didn't have a Javon Baker, Ryan O'Keefe, or Kobi Hudson.

I *hope* and expect UCF to compare more favorably stat-wise to the 2009 Colt McCoy-led Texas team than the 2014 Auburn team moving forward.

Time will tell.
