UCF offensive lineman
Sam Jackson has high expectations for his final season.
The starting left guard and sixth-year player appeared at Monday's press conference, just three days before the Knights open the 2022 season against South Carolina State.
"I'm ecstatic," Jackson said about the start of the season. "I love playing football. This is about the time when you're ready to hit somebody else. I'm happy for that."
UCF will start a pair of transfers at the offensive tackle positions:
Tylan Grable (Jacksonville State) and
Ryan Swoboda (Virginia).
"They've been really good," Jackson said. "They clicked instantly with the unit. Same thing with all our guys. They've done a really good job. They've worked their tails off to get in the position they're in right now."
Another transfer,
Cam Kinnie (Georgia) will back up Jackson at left guard.
"Cam Kinnie is a great player," Jackson said. "He's going to be a good addition for our unit. He came in with the mindset of playing. He practiced just like that. He's done everything right. He's gotten better within our offense. He's done a great job all around. He'll definitely help us out throughout the season.
What part of
John Rhys Plumlee's game is he most excited to see?
"I love to see his legs," Jackson said. "He's a really good runner. He's also an excellent passer. Just be himself. He doesn't need to do anything more than that. He's a very dynamic player and I think we're going to see that on Thursday."
He has high expectations for the offense.
"I hope it's as explosive as we've ever been," Jackson said. "We could be the top offense in the country if we do what we're supposed to do."
He said it's the "ultimate goal" to win the American Athletic Conference Championship. That's why he came back for a sixth year.
Jackson is the last remaining member of UCF's 2017 scholarship recruiting class, which was recruited by
Scott Frost. He was a true freshman during Frost's final season in Orlando in which the team went undefeated.
I asked Jackson if he watched the Nebraska-Northwestern game and whether he was surprised Frost has struggled since leaving UCF.
"I know he's a great coach," Jackson said. "I know he was trying to be aggressive. Some things may not click as well as they did down here, up there. You know, I wish nothing but the best. I hope he wins the rest of his games."
