This isn't the opinion of Gus Malzahn or Chip Lindsey, and there are a lot of variables that go into making a QB decision. It's also still fairly early with just five practices so far.
But after giving it a few days and asking a few people with knowledge of practices, I asked them who they thought was ahead, and everybody has said Mikey Keene.
He's been more accurate passing the football, knows where to go with the play and makes quick decisions. JRP less so.
Of course, Sunday is the first scrimmage. There is a second scrimmage next Saturday which I believe is open to Shareholders. Gus has said he'd like to name a starter following the two scrimmages, but has also said the time frame could be fluid. He says usually there's a point when the team "knows" who the best QB is, so it's pretty easy to name a starter at that point.
Knowing JRP's athleticism and elite running ability, you'd love for the other parts of his game to catch up. He would be unstoppable. It should also be stated that practices somewhat limit JRP since QBs usually aren't "live." It's hard for him to show off his speed when the play is being blown dead because a DL got within a few feet of him.
In Mikey's case, with the offensive talent UCF has at all positions, all that is needed is a QB that is going to be smart with the ball, makes good decisions and gets into the hands of playmakers. Mikey can definitely do that.
Hopefully we'll hear some chatter following the scrimmage.
