2017 Spring Game Hot Takes Revisited

Not impressed with MM throwing motion.

LOL

MM best player on the field right now. Looks very accurate so far

Very nice

Ms. Alana needs to be in Axis magazine

Someone was running my schtick long before me

Ahh, they just showed the cabanas on TV. I see that being a disaster waiting to happen.

@nosurf2day was a mushroom blogger. Shitakes.

I think all the QBs on this roster could put together a clinic on how not to throw a football.

Oof.

I was there and concerned...but who knows we might go 12-0 next year...

What’s your gut for 2022 @ECPSUP 💴

Idk what game some of you watched.. Milton wasn't perfect but to say he hasn't improved is absurd.

We also appear to have quite a few weapons with experience with Hamilton, Killins, Smith, and Akins.

Greene has potential but is still quite young. You can tell Frost wants him in the Killins role from last year.

I think it's not a guarantee but it certainly is possible the offense takes a monster step forward.

And that we did

Looks like that 25lbs went to his legs. That's a combine vertical in pads.

NFL combine invite and drafted.

This is half the fun boys!

Spring Game Observations

1. Keene and Plumlee both played well, Keene’s end zone interception notwithstanding. The difference is
Plumlee is a capable thrower AND a dynamic runner, more of the dual threat QB Malzahn favors. My
opinion is Plumlee wins the job but Keene will also see the field.

2. We have an abundance of talented playmakers at WR and RB. Freshman Jordan McDonald is as big as
Bowser but faster. He is a physical, punishing back. Carry’s may be limited simply because position
is so deep this year.

3. TE Kemore Gamble looks like the big, physical TE we have been missing. Can catch and is not afraid of
contact. Expect him to supplant Holler and be the QB’s favorite security blanket.

4. Lee Hunter is a big man but do not expect him to start. Appears he has a conditioning issue as his
pass rush lacked intensity. If he dedicates himself to getting in shape during the summer and figures
out what it takes to play at this level he may well prove me wrong. He has the potential to be a major
space eater on D.

5. This may be a breakout year for DE Landon Woodson. He physically reminds me of former Miami
Dolphins Hall of Famer Jason Taylor. If he finds Taylor’s motor he could be a QB nightmare.

In summary, we have playmakers all over the field on offense. Need more depth at LB. DB’s should
be solI’d, same for OL. If we stay healthy this could be a very special season.

Spring Game first take: Defense

Josh Celiscar and Devin Hester made their presence felt consistently in positive ways.

Reserves who made some plays were Lee Hunter, Dallas Corbitt, Cole Joyce, Quade Mosier, William Wells, Kadeem Leonard, Kervins Cupuit, Marco Domio, Jaiden Francois, and Landon Woodson. These guys will earn more playing time in the fall.

Biggest disappointments were Morris-Brash, Kobi Perry, and K.D. McDaniel. I think I herd Morris-Brash's and McDaniel's names once or twice each on the radio broadcast. The offensive line I'm certain had something to do with that. Perry, meanwhile, did not live up to expectations. His biggest mention was being injured.

UCF has deficiencies along the defensive line (Edge) and at linebacker (Depth) and will need to address these issues through the portal.

Request for those attending the spring game

Take your iPhone or Android and snap sone pics of the first and second units as well as the units on the field after halftime. I want a projected depth chart heading into the spring. If UCF projects any statistics onto the jumbotron, get a shot of those too. Thanks in advance!

In regards to UCF's jerseys, it's more about creating buzz than actual practicality. That being said, have you ever used a QR code, scanning it using your phone app to access a site or information? Me personally, I've never seen a need.

***Long Snapper Alex Ward wants to leave his legacy 🏈***

UCF has a truly elite long snapper in returning senior Alex Ward.

One of three finalists for the Patrick Mannely Award last season, Ward had a standing invite to the Senior Bowl and likely could have made an NFL team this year. But the Fort Walton Beach native still has unfinished business in Orlando, among them reclaiming UCF's spot atop the conference.

Ward appeared at Tuesday's press conference.

So why did he come back?

"I'm confident in my ability. I could have gone and played (in the NFL). I'm confident next year I'll have that same exact chance. I wanted to come back to UCF and help this team with leadership and get the specialists room right to where it needs to be. Leave a lasting memory here."

Ward is already pretty good, but areas of emphasis this spring include blocking, coverage and perfecting his field goal snaps.

He traveled to Chicago a few months ago for the Mannelly Award presentation where he got to mingle with other top college long snappers as well as some of the best pros to do it.

"It was amazing. The whole trip was phenomenal. What I really took out of it was the connections. The three guys who started that award are really intertwined in the snapping community and now I have all three of their cell phone numbers. Bouncing ideas off them and stuff like that. That's the biggest thing I got out of going to Chicago."

Ward feels with his experience he can speak up more in team settings whereas usually long snappers would be lower on the totem pole.

Earlier this spring, Gus Malzahn spoke of the need to improve punt protection as a blocked punt vs. Navy negatively impacted the outcome of that game. Ward elaborated a bit more.

"I'm not allowed to go into detail, but we changed a little bit of scheming that I think will shore up that blocking. We've got the full green light to put the best players possible on those lines. Starting guys on offense and defense are going to be on punt, so we'll have the best players in there to do those jobs."

What's the kicking competition like between Daniel Obarski and Colton Boomer?

"It's wide open. Boomer came in hitting really, really well. Daniel is hitting well too. You go with the vet or go with the new guy, we'll see. That's why Boomer came in early. It's full open competition. It's a good competition right now."

I asked specifically what's impressed him about Colton Boomer, the freshman from Lake Mary.

"The kid has the fastest kicking leg I've ever seen. He's got this weird little kicking... I don't know if you've seen it or find it on online, but he kicks it and his right foot goes right back in the ground. We have no idea how he gets the ball off the ground, but he does. It's kind of impressive to watch. He ran a 4.3 when he came to a camp. He's fast."

Under Gus Malzahn, Ward feels this is a "true team again." (Alex said "last year" but I'm pretty sure he was referring to the Heupel era).

"Last year we had a little rift between offense and defense and there wasn't much mingling. Now it feels like a team again. We've got coaches that made it very clear that we're a team, not an offense and a defense. It feels pretty good. We've got some good chemistry."

Alex was asked about "reasonable team goals." He joked and said he's not good with "reasonable" goals.

"I want to win a National Championship," he said. "Reasonable team goal? It's very reasonable we can win the conference. Based off what Cincinnati did, try to get in the playoffs."

Ward was recently honored by UCF as an "Order of Pegasus" recipient, which is the "highest honor and most prestigious award a UCF student can receive." He's the fifth UCF football player in 20 years to receive the distinction, joining T.J. Harnden, Joey Grant, Matthew Wright and Kyle Benkel.

Ward's first two years on campus were 2017 and 2018, which coincided with UCF's tremendous run and back-to-back conference championships. How important is it that he goes out like he came in?

"Huge. That's really the entire reason I came back. I came in and there was such a great culture. 25 straight wins as soon as I got here. I didn't know what losing in college felt like. Then we kind of got off track and down a little bit. Now the guys that have seen that success, seen what it took to get that success, we need them to lead and get the standard back to where it used to be. We're on the right track for that."

***Transfer Visitor 🏈

Florida native that recently went in the portal. Got a quick offer from Illinois. Plays tackle. Not quite sure yet if UCF will offer, or hope he comes in as a walk-on first (like the Mercer OL). Would have multiple years left.

Following a redshirt year in 2020, Dylan Davis made the All-Freshman Team for the Southern Conference this past season.

He'll be at the spring game tomorrow.

UCF AD Terry Mohajir on AAC exit/Big 12 entry, also pledges support for Johnny Dawkins

Matt Murschel caught up with TMo at the "Bowl Season" conference in Orlando.

TMo said they're still "working through it" in terms of the AAC exit and hopes something is worked out by May.

He also said the Big 12 will play nine conference games so future games against usf probably won't happen.

And this:

Q: On the men’s side of things, what’s your assessment of the job Johnny Dawkins has done?

Mohajir:
“Johnny keeps having winning seasons. They beat two teams in the Sweet 16 and had some injuries at the end of the year. We’re excited for Johnny and the future of the program. There’s nobody that knows basketball better than Johnny. As a player, a coach and a high-level athlete. He knows what the Big 12 will be like and how tough the AAC is, and he gets it. So he’s got a lot of opportunities ahead of him and we’re going to support him and believe in him.”
