Hype and Pageantry

Outside of the obvious of winning, these are the additional things I wonder about over the long summer days leading up to the season:

What would UCF's record have to be to get ranked?
Early season, I lean towards 4-0 after beating TCU and Colorado; I think it is no-brainer if we are 5-0 coming off a win in the Swamp. To end the season ranked, I'm thinking a minimum of 9-4, maybe even 10-3.

College GameDay? Big NOON Kickoff?
This is as contingent on our opponent's success as it is our own. I lean towards "no" but this thread is about dreams as much as anything. If it happens, I think Colorado is the most likely for a home game while Florida or West Virginia would be most likely for a road game.

Biggest Home Game Crowd?
Colorado seems likely for this one. If we have a great season, maybe Arizona and Utah games surprise. Homecoming always brings a good draw, so BYU is a Wild Card here.

Unexpected Storyline?
The defense being great gets my vote.

Noon kickoff games?
Cincinnati and BYU get my vote here.

UCF fans in Gainesville O/U?
I think I will see 15,000 of you at the Swamp.

Next Best Traveled to Road Game?
I think a lot of you are going to travel down country roads to go to Morgantown.

Let me know your thoughts and hot takes or other superlative topics I missed. My first notable ommission here is Frankie Valli.

About Damn Time: Justice Department files Antitrust Suit to Break-Up Ticketmaster

“It’s time for fans and artists to stop paying the price for Live Nation’s monopoly. It is time to restore competition and innovation in the entertainment industry. It is time to break up Live Nation, Ticketmaster. The American people are ready for it.”

“The Justice Department accused Live Nation of a slew of tactics — including threats and retaliation — that has allowed the entertainment giant to “suffocate the competition” by keeping a stronghold on virtually every aspect of the industry, from concert promotion to ticketing. The impact on consumers is seen in an “endless list of fees on fans.”

The Justice Department said Live Nation’s anti-competitive practices include using long-term contracts to keep venues from choosing rival ticketers, blocking venues from using multiple ticket sellers and threatening venues that they could lose money and fans if they don’t choose Ticketmaster. The Justice Department says Live Nation also threatened to retaliate against one firm if it didn’t stop a subsidiary from competing for artist promotion contracts.”

***Some Preseason Tidbits: "This can be a special team"***

Just a compilation of things I've heard over the last couple weeks...

The coaches really like this team. There's always the unknown being a former G5 team stepping up in competition - and also factoring in the difficult road schedule - but there's confidence this team can finish much higher than projected in the Big 12.

One quote: "This can be a special team."

I know this sounds like hype so take it for what you will, but some people inside are thinking 9-10 wins are possible if UCF stays healthy and a few breaks go their way.

People are expecting John Rhys Plumlee to take a massive step forward and that has been evident in practices.

Timmy McClain came a LONG way since spring. People really like QB Dylan Rizk and what he did during preseason camp, which is more remarkable because he was a summer enrollee. That being said, neither are close to JRP. Need him to stay healthy, obviously.

RB room is loaded. Not much else needs to be said. RJ, Johnny, Demarkcus, McDonald, even MAR. I'm wondering how they'll keep everybody happy.

WR Xavier Townsend is going to have a breakout. Lots of buzz about him. Javon Baker is going to have an NFL-type year.

They loved Bula Schmidt and had to get him on the field someway. They will rotate OL this season, which is a change from Herb Hand's prior philosophy.

Tre'Mon Morris-Brash has looked really impressive at DE. DL can be really good. We've obviously heard the loud buzz about Lee Hunter.

The secondary will sort itself out, they will play a lot of guys. They feel they recruited well enough and it will be a big improvement over last year. Quadric Bullard being healthy is big.

The weak link may be linebacker in terms of high-level depth. Need Jason Johnson to stay healthy. Walter Yates and Rian Davis will play a lot too.

Vanderbilt Satellite Campus in WPB?

https://commercialobserver.com/2024/08/vanderbilt-university-west-palm-beach/
On August 20th, the West Palm Beach city commission will consider a proposal to build a satellite campus for Vanderbilt in downtown WPB. This is in place of a University of Florida proposal to put a satellite campus in the same area, but the proposal was withdrawn.

It’s official: Vanderbilt University, one of the nation’s best-ranked higher ed institutions, wants to build a $520 million campus in West Palm Beach, Fla.

The 300,000-square-foot campus would house 1,000 students, according to a filing to Palm Beach County and West Palm Beach. Plans call for the construction of a main academic building, student housing, and a parking garage. Education programs would include business, artificial intelligence, data science as well as a so-called innovation hub.

The campus would be nestled between the civic center and Dreyfoos School of the Arts in Downtown West Palm Beach. Of the estimated $519.6 million construction cost, $267.6 million would go towards academic buildings, $217.4 million for student housing and $34.6 million for parking. Schooling programs could start as soon as Fall 2026.

The West Palm Beach City Commission will consider donating city-owned parcels 386 South Tamarind Avenue, 810 to 910 Evernia Street and 913 Fern Street to Vanderbilt on August 19. A day later, the Palm Beach County Commission will consider Vanderbilt’s campus proposal.
