UCF is looking to a former SEC team captain to lead their linebacker unit.
Ethan Barr, a transfer from Vanderbilt, has been manning the No. 1 mike linebacker position this spring. We caught up with him following a recent practice.
Barr initially committed to Washington during his portal recruitment process, but flipped to UCF after the coaching change in Seattle. He said it's been a smooth transition ever since.
He had met
Lee Hunter and
Ricky Barber during his December OV, and already knew
Trent Whittemore. He had actually worked with
Ted Roof during his freshman season at Vandy.
"Getting back with (Roof) was a pleasant surprise. It was a great coincidence and kind of made me feel like this is where I'm supposed to be."
Barr sees the offense as being very explosive.
He has a great rapport within the guys in the LB room, particularly the fellow transfers.
Barr says he'll be a leader and great communicator within the defense.
On Thursday (when this interview was conducted), there were back-to-back-to-back interceptions.
A lot of work is being done to stop the run.
He never faced
KJ Jefferson while he was at Vanderbilt.
His dog has an
Instagram account.
After playing at Vanderbilt, Barr is looking forward to playing for a program capable of winning at a high level.
"The reason I came here is to win and win big. That's what Coach Malzahn has been saying this whole time. Win championships. That's ultimately what I came here to do."
As for the recently-approved NCAA legislation for helmet communication, Barr thinks he'll be the player on defense with the speaker in his helmet. They haven't started utilizing yet, but will soon.
On KJ Jefferson, Barr says he's a really good player with a big arm that can run. He's fast and very strong in the run game.
He's been impressed with WR
Bredell Richardson, CB
Chasen Johnson and S
Christian Peterson. Among returners, he really respects
RJ Harvey from going head-to-head in practice.
Barr is really excited about the UF game. They did beat the Gators in Nashville once, but never in Gainesville.
One of his former Vandy teammates,
Ken Seals, transferred to TCU to play QB, so Barr is excited about the Big 12 opener in Fort Worth.
TJ Bullard is his apartment next door neighbor so they hang out often.
Xavier Townsend is there often. He's become close with
Cam Vining as well.
