REPORT with SOUND BITES: UCF Football Coach Gus Malzahn talks about Staff Changes

UCF Head Football Coach Gus Malzahn met the media to talk about several staff changes coming in the 2024 season. After a 6-7 campaign, Malzahn called the performance unacceptable and vowed that the upcoming season would be different. Part of the difference will be changes in the coordinator roles on both sides of the ball, first with new Defensive Coordinator Ted Roof, and now with new Offensive Coordinator Tim Harris, Jr. Both coaches are familiar with Malzahn, and he thinks that is important component of success.

COLUMN: UCF Men's Basketball is off to a surprising start in the Big 12

“I think we will develop an appetite for hoops this spring seeing the caliber of teams in our conference and wanting a piece of that. 7-11 in conference play last year was enough to get a Big Dance invite in the Big 12. Let’s not finish last, steal a ranked win at home, and just try to be competitive. Dawkins is a nice, good man. Just don’t embarrass us, please. I’m here for the vibes.”

-Dali

That was me two weeks ago in my 2024 State of the Union article to kick off the year. Well, damnit Dawkins, you accomplished my ask only six games into league play our inaugural year hoopin’ in the Big 12 Conference.

Article: Class is Still Out

Maybe the biggest lesson about this inaugural basketball season is that “expectations are the thief of joy.” Johnny Dawkins is maneuvering the SEC of his sport, while another head coach on campus with higher expectations is being a sport about no longer maneuvering in the SEC. Makes you think.

We’re on to Cincinnati.

Shemarri Allen is hurt after a rolled ankle finishing the West Virginia game. Next man up.

If Dawkins brings a ‘W’ back to Orlando Saturday night, maybe I tell Terry to start drafting some contract extension language.

Just maybe.

My latest on the eve of this beautiful Big 12 Basketball Saturday slate. ⤵️

Heard a few things today:

Source is connected but the numbers don’t add up. We keep John Walker one more year. His junior year if he stays healthy will price him out of this place. I believe that one. I also heard KJ Jefferson got a ton of money. Not sure I believe that one since we can’t build a lazy river.
Tennison is gonna play linebacker. I don’t follow it closely enough, just passing along what I heard. The finances players get I find hard to believe so won’t post them. Source says he thinks we can win the Big 12. Was good to hear, particularly coming from him. Not much but better than no info.*

🚨 🧱 Knight Walk Spring Brick Deadline - Jan 31 🧱 🚨

If you’ve been considering a brick, order by end of month to have it installed by May.

I wonder if any of the tower work will impact existing bricks?

Anyone have one? Kind of a cool thing to have right? What do the replica bricks look like?

We don’t have one yet but I thought it would be neat to buy, so I can show the kid when we go back to FL for games over the years

Sad campus incident - arrest made

In October, President Cartwright shared with us a message condemning hate, violence, and antisemitism. Over the past several months, university leaders have engaged with students, student organizations, parents, and our community leaders to ensure we continue to build a strong campus climate of inclusion and belonging.
Yesterday, UCF Police were called to respond to a troubling situation — one that calls for an additional reminder to our community to reflect on the power of words, the importance of civility, and the need for respect for one another.
During an outdoor demonstration that was hosted in accordance with university policy, a group of students was confronted by another student upset by the nature of the demonstration. This individual went on to threaten the students, saying he was going to shoot them with a gun. This statement, a direct anti-Semitic threat, meets the federal definition of a hate crime.
The individual who made this reckless threat was arrested by UCF Police, and officers have confirmed that he does not own any firearms. While the student acknowledged his emotions got the better of him and apologized for his words, he will still have to answer for the violations of university policy and state and federal laws.
At UCF, we all have the right to free expression — but violence, threats of violence, and unlawful harassment will not be tolerated.
I hope our campus community will continue to come together to condemn hate and violence and to uphold the culture of compassion, understanding, and peace that we have all built together at UCF.

Shemarri Allen's injury

Shemarri Allen appeared to be an extreme pain after suffering an ankle injury midway through the second half. He couldn't put any pressure on his foot and was carried to the training table where a pack of ice was applied. He later left the arena on crutches.

Dawkins confirmed it was a rolled ankle after the game, but obviously didn't know the extent of it. Jaylin was asked about how potentially losing Shemarri would impact the team, and he seemed to think the injury wasn't going to be super serious and he wouldn't be out long. We'll see.

Johnny Dawkins:

"Not sure. He's getting imaging tonight to see the extent of what happened. He did roll his ankle, so we'll see. The one thing I know about Shemarri is he' s a tough young man. If he can play and contribute, he's going to do it. We have to get the report back from the doctor to see the extent of his injury."

Jaylin Sellers:

"If he can't play, it's next man up. It would most definitely hurt us, but I feel like he'll be all right. He rolled his ankle a little bit, but he's a tough guy. He'll be all right."
