UCF quarterback commit
Dylan Rizk is counting down the days until he officially becomes a Knight.
That's about two more weeks, Dec. 21, the early signing day for college football. On Monday night, the Cardinal Gibbons star was visited by UCF head coach
Gus Malzahn and offensive coordinator
Chip Lindsey.
"They were here for over two hours talking about football with me and my family," Rizk said. "My mom prepared a great meal for them. Some pasta, chicken parm. Nice food... They stayed over pretty late. I didn't want them to leave. Great time. We talked about football and really got to connect. I learned about Coach Gus' full background, about his days at Auburn, Arkansas and Tulsa. He told me everything. It was really great to learn about your head coach that you'll have for the next four to five years."
Malzahn and Lindsey think he'll be a perfect fit for the offense too.
"We all know the offense at UCF is better for more of a running and throwing quarterback," Rizk said. "They told me they love my speed and love my ability to throw. They love everything. They can't wait for me to get up there and do my thing. I wish I could early enroll."
2023 will be an exciting year as it will be UCF's first season playing in the Big 12.
"Coach Malzahn gave me some insight and it's going to be an insane, awesome schedule," Rizk said. "It's like nothing UCF has ever seen before. It's like I'm coming in at the perfect time. Coach Gus even told me that. Everything is really getting going now. UCF is the future of college football. We're getting a new level of respect, going to a Power Five conference. We'll get the respect when we beat those big-time teams and I know we will because we're UCF and we're the best."
His official visit was this past June for Bounce House Weekend.
"
John Rhys Plumlee was my host for the official visit," Rizk said. "He's a really nice guy. I've been staying in touch with him. He's been in college football a long time so it'll be good to learn under a guy who has a lot of experience. I was really hoping he was staying because I'm really looking forward to learning under him."
Rizk attended a pair of UCF home games this season - Georgia Tech and Navy. He's gotten to know a few of his fellow commits, especially
Troy Ford Jr. and
Johnathan Cline.
He would love to be an early enrollee and report next month, but that option is not available at his school. He does plan to get to UCF in late May following his graduation.
Rizk won a state championship as a junior, but Cardinal Gibbons was upended by American Heritage in their quest for another.
"It was still a great season," Rizk said. "We started off really well. We went 11-2 and lost to the same team twice. They were a really good team. Really talented."
As a senior, Rizk completed 64 percent of his passes (174 of 272) for 1,987 yards, 18 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He carried the ball 47 times for 323 yards and five more scores.
"I'm always trying to improve my game," Rizk said. "I think I've grown each year in high school and definitely from my junior to senior year. We have a lot of great coaches at Cardinal Gibbons that have taught me how to be a good quarterback and a good leader. Being a good quarterback isn't just on the field. I learned a lot of things that I'll take with me to UCF."
Rizk has followed in the footsteps of his two older brothers. Raymond, who is the oldest, played quarterback at FAU. Middle brother Ryan played at Miami.
"It's funny because we're going to different Florida schools," Rizk said. "I remember my brother Ryan showing me videos back when I was 10 years old throwing a football. They've been behind me since day one."
Asked which quarterbacks he likes to watch, Rizk said he's a big fan of USC's
Caleb Williams.
"He's probably my favorite," Rizk said. "I think he's awesome."
In fact, Rizk said he's probably more of a college fan than NFL. And he'll get to live it beginning next year.
"I'm so looking forward to playing college football," Rizk said. "I love it. It's an indescribable feeling I have. I love waking up knowing I'm going to UCF to play football. I love it. I can't wait to play in the games and get to know other people that want the same thing as me. Everybody on the team wants to win a National Championship. That's what I want and what we're striving to get."
