Note on OL Dayne Shor...

He had initially indicated he was coming to the spring game, but said something came up last minute and he couldn't make it. He did say that he planned to visit UCF in June. He wasn't sure if it would official or unofficial. He does have an OV to Oklahoma from June 18-20.

RISC-V

Bit of a sensationalist headline, but Intel is partnering with various Academia and even some industry to hedge its bets.

After selling off its Digital X-Scale/StrongARM in the mid '00s, after Atom was never performant (not in-line, and definitely not superscalar) versus ARM (or even i-Core in low-power states), Intel re-licensed ARM in the early '10s as well.

But more and more it looks like as I said a half-dozen years ago ...
  • ARMv8+ will slowly replace x86-64 in consoles, desktops even workstations in the '20s
    • It already overtook the server at the end of the '10s, not just portables, all while ...
  • RISC-V will slowly replace ARMv8+ in the portables and ASIC solutions in the '20s
    • It's clearly more scalable, focuses on response time over throughput, and makes a leaner, faster, better controller for ASICs
    • Possibly better than ARMv4+ for even GPU/vector controllers, hence ... supercomputers as its first, killer (better than ARMv8) app?
It's funny how Stanford MIPS has all but died off -- after almost becoming the universal standard by 1990 -- but Berkeley RISC is still going, despite the SPARC dying off a slow death like VAX.

***Lakeland WR Daidren Zipperer books visits, talks UCF***

A big spring has fueled an explosion of recruiting attention for Daidren Zipperer.

"I ended my junior year with three offers," Zipperer said. "Schools really took notice of me this spring. I had four receptions for 150 yards and two touchdowns at the spring game. That set it off. I'm currently at 23 offers.

"There were a lot of phone calls and coaches to talk to, but I'm taking it all in because you only get to experience it once. I'm loving it."

He remembers watching his older brother, Keon Zipperer, go through the same process. Keon was a Class of 2019 tight end prospect who is entering his fourth year at Florida.

"Keon told me to stay patient," Zipperer said. "Choose my decision wisely. Don't just go somewhere because you think it's cool. It's important to build relationships with coaches."

This past Friday, Zipperer dropped by UCF for an unofficial visit. He was offered by the Knights in April.

"They wanted me to come to Bounce House Weekend (on Saturday), but I had to go up to the Carolinas," Zipperer said. "I actually scheduled my official visit to come back to UCF next week (June 10-12). We were talking about officials and they said I've got to come, so we locked it in. They were really showing me a lot of love."

What stands out about UCF?

"It's the coaching staff," Zipperer said. "All of them show love... Me and (wide receivers) Coach (Grant) Heard are very close. We talk almost every day. Same with Coach (Chip) Lindsey and Coach (Isaiah) Walker. I got to meet Coach (Gus) Malzahn for the first time on Friday. It was just me and my mom talking with him for a good 15 minutes. We were just chopping it up, having a good time. We talked about his rings and how I feel about UCF. I told him straight up that the coaches are unbelievable here."

On Saturday, Zipperer toured South Carolina.

"South Carolina is dope," Zipperer said. "Same thing as UCF. They treated me like I was at home. We went on a tour, did a photo shoot, saw the stadium and where they workout. The coaching staff is great. That's what stands out. I'm big on relationships."

Zipperer will visit North Carolina on Sunday. Former Lakeland (and UCF) assistant Caleb Pickrell is on the Tar Heel staff.

Following his UCF official visit, Zipperer plans to camp at Alabama on June 13. Then he's scheduled two more official visits: Pittsburgh (June 16-18) and BYU (June 24-26).

Two former Lakeland players recently starred at Pitt.

Two of my friends, Damarri Mathis and A.J. Davis, went to Pitt," Zipperer said. "Demarri just got drafted this past draft in the fourth round. I also know Jordan Addison went there. The coaching staff is real cool."

BYU was the first school to offer Zipperer, doing so last October.

"I really like the coaching staff," Zipperer said of BYU. "They really believed in me when nobody else did."

Zipperer isn't quite sure when he'll be ready to make a decision, maybe later in the fall.

"My biggest thing is my relationship with the coaches," he said.

New addition to the UCF MBB staff

After three seasons as head coach at Dr. Phillips, Ben Witherspoon stepped down in April. Today I noticed his name and pic on the UCF MBB page of the school's website with the title of Special Assistant to the Head Coach.

Witherspoon led Dr. Phillips to two district titles, two regional titles and the first state championship in the school's history in 2021. His 2021-22 team had a McDonald's All American (Ernest Udeh Jr./Kansas) and two players headed to UF (Riley Kugel and Denzel Aberdeen). IIRC, Witherspoon coached four players who signed with Division I programs and has ten players total pursuing basketball at the collegiate level. Dr. Phillips was nationally ranked in two of his three seasons at the school. Witherspoon is a really good at player development.

Witherspoon was also part of a National Championship staff at Montverde Academy.

Beyond all of that, he is a GREAT person. I haven't Tweeted the news because I know how badly he wanted to land a college gig and I don't want to publicly step on his moment.

What is a Conundrum??????????

Ok Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury.

I say we have a Conundrum today concerning UCF Sports…

We have a doubleheader today of UCF Women’s Softball starting at 2:00 pm against Furman.

We have the UCF Women’s Basketball NCAA Tournament game at 3:30 against the gators.

We have the UCF Baseball doubleheader today starting at 3:00 pm against UNC Greeensboro.

If you like all three teams like I do and want to be there or watch them, this is really a Conundrum for me….
