***UCF DB Quadric Bullard confident about UF matchup: 'We want to make a statement'***

UCF safety Quadric Bullard knows the Gasparilla Bowl opportunity against Florida is a big one.

"The game to me mentally is another game, just another game, so you can't get too high or too low," Bullard said. "But overall looking at the game, it is big because this is the best of Florida."

Bullard said he knew a few UF players, notably running back Nay'Quan Wright.

"I played Little League with him back in Hollywood, Florida," Bullard said. "My first few years of football he used to beat up on me a lot. I cried a lot, but it was something I got used to over the years."

After spending his true freshman season in 2020 as a reserve, Bullard emerged this season as a starter and one of UCF's better defensive players.

"I would say I have improved a lot from last year to this year," he said. "Physically, yeah. Mentally, a lot more. Coaches put a lot on me which I expect them to do. Being this young and being able to decipher things people my age wouldn't know how to do. They expect me to do things and help out the younger guys."

Offseason goals?

"My main focus will be improving physically and my body structure," Bullard said. "I'm quite small right now. A lot of people know that and try to take advantage of that. So during the offseason I have to get bigger so they don't have anything to take advantage of."

UF quarterback Emory Jones is a true dual threat which is a concern, but Bullard seemed aware of his tendency to turn the ball over. Jones threw 13 interceptions in 310 pass attempts this season, a mark that was the worst in the nation.

"Looking at his film, yeah, he's a great player," Bullard said. "I give him that. But there's a couple mistakes that he makes that we have to capitalize on those. Containing him, our defensive line should do that very well. When it's time for the DBs to contain him, I feel we can do that too."

Bullard said the team is "pretty confident" after wrapping up their second week of preparation.

"People say it's just a game, but for us it's our championship," he said. "We want to make a statement we can hang with any team."

***Defensive Coordinator Travis Williams previews Gasparilla Bowl vs. Florida***

UCF defensive coordinator Travis Williams appeared at a Gasparilla Bowl press conference Tuesday, a couple days before the Knights meet Florida.

What's your opinion on the transfer portal and how it's working in recruiting, and there's talk whether high school kids are getting a raw deal.

"I'll start with this. The transfer portal, when you're recruiting high school kids and you don't get them, a lot of times if you built that relationship and they go to another place, a lot of times you have a chance to get them coming back the second time around. For the high school guys that are leaving, I can see it's a little something there as far as being overlooked. I can definitely see that. Even for the junior college guys. You can see that as well. All of this is new to everyone. I'm sure they're gonna come up with some kind of way for all the kids to get what they deserve. But at the same time, I think it's different for different staffs as well. It may be a kid that gets overlooked. Maybe not overlooked. Right now it's so early in the process so we're still learning."

Greg Knox coached you at Auburn. What's your relationship like?

"Coach Knox, that's my guy. First of all, great guy. Great family guy. Great coach. He's been doing it a long time. He's been in the SEC a long time. When he left Auburn, he went to Mississippi State. Then he's been at Florida. Just being in the SEC that long says a lot about him. A really good teacher. A people person. I've been knowing Coach Knox almost 20 years now. Just a stand-up guy. He's a guy I always root for. I can't root for him Thursday. I'm a big fan of Coach Knox."

Have you talked this week?

"I just saw him last night. We had a social. Saw him last night. Hugged his neck. He hugged my neck. Just an awesome person. A guy that's from Texas. He has Texas roots. I'm from South Carolina. We just talked about G.J. getting a job. How excited he was for G.J. I was talking about how excited I was for him. I am for him. Coach Knox is a stand-up guy."

What is your role in containing Emory Jones? What's realistic in terms of numbers?

"I don't know about numbers. We've got to figure out a way to get him on the ground. Find a way to keep him bottled up. He does a really good job. He's a really good runner. They call runs for him. He's not just dropping back and scrambling like the kid we played in the last game. These are designed runs for him. They make you play 11 on 11. Every guy has to fit on the run and be in tune with the run. That's what Dan Mullen was always doing. They're going to keep doing it. They did it vs. Florida State with the staff there now. That's something they're doing. It's a good scheme. It's pretty much wildcat the whole time. He has the ability to throw it. It's a unique deal that we've got to get him on the ground and bottle him up."

Big Kat Bryant, how big is it to have him playing even when he's playing in all-star games?

"It's huge. For one, I'm super proud of him. He came in and was a no-ego guy. Came to work every day. Didn't miss a practice. Even if he was nicked or bruised. Says a lot about him. Coming from Auburn, but he wasn't an ego guy. Had his best season this season. He got everything that he earned. I'm a big fan of his. I know he has a bright future. I didn't know about the East-West (game) so I need to congratulate him about that. He's a guy that deserves it. He came in with a lot leadership. Our guys were seeing how it's done. Again, proud of him.

It looks like you got to talk to some former players, Jamel Dean and K.J. Britt. How was that?

"It was cool. They play for the Tampa Bay Bucs, they stay right down the road. K.J., he's my guy. He'll come up to Orlando and visit us. It was good to see Jamel Dean as well. Those guys are doing great. Having a really good season with Tampa Bay. We always root for the guys we've coached all around the league."

Freshman Brandon Adams and the younger guys, what did you see throughout the season?

"Just growth. It was one of those years with injuries and different things. Just like coach was saying, building a foundation. Brandon has poise. He has poise and confidence. He's got ice water in his veins. He's not scared. He's from Atlanta. A former quarterback. I think he said he played defensive end in Pop Warner. He has a bright future. He's going to learn from Coach Addi and Coach Gibbs and he'll get better and better. Proud of his progress."

Signing day was last week. How exciting was it to sign the Henderson twins?

"It was awesome. It was exciting to sign all those guys. But keeping the guys that's close to Orlando, keeping them in Orlando is a big deal. That's something Coach Malzahn, we really wanted to do coming in. Keeping the guys close to home. Try our best not to let them out. I really do think we have a really good class. You're talking about a foundation. These guys, we wanted really good football players. Good people, but football players as well. Didn't look at where they were rated. We watched the film and trusted our eyes. We're very pleased with the class."

The one spot you didn't sign anybody is d-tackle. Is that a priority in the portal or an ongoing process?

"We just feel like we've got a really good d-line. We've got a lot of guys coming back. We should be fine. If we go in the portal, we'll get a veteran guy. Looking at the guys coming out next year, it's a lot of guys coming out that we think could come in and help us early as freshmen. We feel really good about our interior. If we add a guy here or there, that would be great, but we did that on purpose as far as what we're trying to do."

***UCF OL Cole Schneider excited to play final game vs. UF***

UCF offensive lineman Cole Schneider spoke with the media on Tuesday, a couple days prior to the Gasparilla Bowl against Florida.

The highlights:

Schneider referenced the upcoming UCF-UF series (2024, 2030, 2033) and lamented he wouldn't be a part of it, so was obviously stoked when the opportunity presented itself to play Florida in a bowl game.

"It was amazing, honestly," Schneider said. "Having that last hurah being an in-state rivalry game, especially a good one here at the Gasparilla Bowl."

He talked about the need to continue to "hone in on the details" and the "little things" (player speak) and also spoke of the growing confidence of Mikey Keene.

Schneider was asked if he had the option to come back for another year. The response was sort of vague and could have been clearer, though I thought it was well established that Schneider is moving on to give his best shot for the NFL as he was already locked in to play in the Hula Bowl. It seemed he was hesitant to say that though, instead saying he's focusing on this game.

Having Isaiah Bowser back is great because he's a "bully back there."

What would a win against Florida mean?

"It would definitely make a statement for the State of Florida, for sure," Schneider said. "There's been a lot of talk since I've been at UCF who is the best. We really haven't played many in-state games, but from here on out I think there's gonna be more of a rivalry with the in-state schools."

His favorite career memory?

"Being part of the 2017 Peach Bowl team," Schneider said. "Even though I was a redshirting freshman, there was something about beating Auburn. Something special about that. That whole year put together. It just didn't seem real. It was amazing. That team was something different."

***Gus Malzahn talks Florida - Gasparilla Bowl Press Conference (Dec. 21)***

UCF head coach Gus Malzahn previews the Gasparilla Bowl matchup against Florida during a press conference on Tuesday, Dec. 21 following his team's practice in Tampa. The Knights and Gators will square off Thursday night from Raymond James Stadium.

Opening statement:

"We had our first practice here at the site. It was good to get our guys moving around. Any time you play in a bowl and you've got two weeks to prepare, it's one of those deals that you're just going over the details and fine tuning of things. I thought overall it was a good practice."

What did you work on specifically in practice today? Or was it a walk through?

"It was more than a walk-through. We've prepared. We've had plenty of practices to prepare for this. It's the finer tuning of things. You're talking about a game, this is what I've been telling our guys: It's going to be about execution. We're playing a very talented team. We're playing a team that eight weeks ago, six weeks ago, whatever, they played Alabama down to the very end and could have won the game. Talking about a team that played in the SEC Championship Game last year. Almost won the game. You're talking about an ultra-talented team. I told them the windows are going to be a little smaller than they normally are. It's going to be about execution and tackling in open space. They're very good at running the football. Their head coach right now is the running back coach, so probably going to run the football. Got to stop the run. Going to be about the execution and the finer details of everything. That's what we've been preaching to our guys. That's kind of what we worked on today. We didn't do a lot of physical stuff. It was more the little things and the mental preparation. I liked the way our guys handled themselves today."

Defensive ends, trying to contain Emory Jones, how important is it for them to contain and keep him in the pocket?

"But he throws the ball pretty well too. I think he's their leading rusher. You've got to stop the run. That's a big challenge when a guy is such a good runner. You talk about trying to get after it and rushing the passer. It makes you slow down a little bit. We've got a lot of respect for him as we do their whole offense. They've got a real offense. It's one of the best offenses in all of college football. Really it starts with him."

In the past, whether or not it's true, there's been talk UCF maybe didn't get the best shot from opponents in a bowl game. Maybe they weren't motivated to play. Do you have any concerns Florida won't give you their best effort?

"No. No. We feel real strongly they'll give us their best effort. It's two in-state schools. When you get two in-state schools, especially in this state. Both teams will get their best."

On Emory Jones, Tatum Bethune said yesterday it's a similar game plan to preparing for Malik Cunningham at Louisville. Do you agree with that comparison?

"Yeah. I don't want to give away our secrets. First of all, both those quarterbacks, Emory and Malik, they're outstanding. They can make plays with their feet. They present different kind of challenges. There's no doubt. That's a tough one."

What about the younger guys in bowl practices? Did you get an opportunity to scout other guys? Anybody stand out?

"The unique thing for us is we've got 27 players who started the season with us who are no longer with us. So the young guys have been thrown into the fire and have actually been playing. So usually bowl practice the first week is about the young guys and putting the ball down in a scrimmage. We haven't been able to do that just because we're trying the guys we have left, to get to the game, so it's been a little different as far as strategy goes. We haven't been really physical. Last week we had a good Tuesday, Wednesday practice. We're at a point now our depth is so thin, we've just got to get our guys to the game."

How happier are you now that you're moving around better and will coach from the sidelines?

"Golly. Yeah. That was miserable. I don't ever want to do that again. I'm going to do a better job of paying attention on the sideline. Even to our own players. I'm glad to be on the sideline."

Are you 100 percent?

"I'm probably about 80 to 85 (percent). I'll be ready when the game starts. I'll be ready to go."

What's your relationship with UF interim coach Greg Knox?

"He was at Auburn a long time with Tuberville. I think he was there when I got there in '09 and he had just left. So we've got that connection. I've coached against him numerous times. He's a class act. He's a really good coach. We'll get their best."

What is your biggest goal in this game beyond just winning? What do you want to see from your team?

"I just want to win. Yeah. It's really as simple as that."

Can a bowl win set the tone for the offseason and carry over to the next year?

"No doubt. Bowls have a chance to give you momentum in a lot of different areas. You see it every year. I told our guys, this first year we're building our foundation. We want to try to send these seniors out on a high note. Get some momentum. That's really what we've been talking about."

G.J. Kinne was officially announce as Incarnate Word's coach. How do you plan replacing him?

"I'm going to wait on that until after the game. First of all, we're very happy for G.J. He wanted to be a head coach. I knew that when I hired him. For him to have this opportunity, that's a very quality program. Been in the playoffs the last two years. He's from Texas. I think it's a great opportunity. I'm very proud of him. He's going to come back tomorrow and still help us in the bowl which we're very appreciative of that. It doesn't surprise me. I've got some other guys on staff that will be head coaches too. There's no doubt about that. We're happy for him."

S.J. Tuohy got promote to Associate AD. Talk about what led to that.

"S.J., I already knew a lot about him when I hired him. He's one of those rising stars. He's done a super job with a lot of different things. Any time you're a new staff coming in, everybody's got to step up and he really went above and beyond. He earned that. He's a rising star in this profession. He'll be an AD probably in a short period of time. While we have him, we're very happy. He's a people person. He cares about our players. He's got a special gift. That was well deserved."

How do you approach the transfer portal? Are you actively looking for players? Do people come to you?

"We're looking for players that are right fits for us, that can come in and help. The high school guys we signed just recently, we're tickled to death to have those guys. We'll be strategic in the portal. Everything's changed. College football has changed. The guys that manage their roster the best are going to have a big advantage in college football. Like I said earlier, we're in the process of building our foundation. Felt real strong we need to start out with high school guys. That's the long-term effect. The guys we signed, there's a lot of NFL guys. We will add some guys from the portal. As long as they fit with what we're trying to do. Get ready for next year."

How do you think Travis Williams has grown as a coach?

"First of all, I knew he was going to do a great job. He's a relationship guy too. Gets real close to his players. They play extremely hard for him. Staff wise, he's such a team guy. He's one of those guys that really has a special gift. I think he's done an outstanding job. You're talking about we lost our leading tackler, we lost our leading pass rusher. We lost a lot of guys. It's kind of next man up. Our defense never flinched. I think he did a great job."
