UCF safety Quadric Bullard knows the Gasparilla Bowl opportunity against Florida is a big one.
"The game to me mentally is another game, just another game, so you can't get too high or too low," Bullard said. "But overall looking at the game, it is big because this is the best of Florida."
Bullard said he knew a few UF players, notably running back Nay'Quan Wright.
"I played Little League with him back in Hollywood, Florida," Bullard said. "My first few years of football he used to beat up on me a lot. I cried a lot, but it was something I got used to over the years."
After spending his true freshman season in 2020 as a reserve, Bullard emerged this season as a starter and one of UCF's better defensive players.
"I would say I have improved a lot from last year to this year," he said. "Physically, yeah. Mentally, a lot more. Coaches put a lot on me which I expect them to do. Being this young and being able to decipher things people my age wouldn't know how to do. They expect me to do things and help out the younger guys."
Offseason goals?
"My main focus will be improving physically and my body structure," Bullard said. "I'm quite small right now. A lot of people know that and try to take advantage of that. So during the offseason I have to get bigger so they don't have anything to take advantage of."
UF quarterback Emory Jones is a true dual threat which is a concern, but Bullard seemed aware of his tendency to turn the ball over. Jones threw 13 interceptions in 310 pass attempts this season, a mark that was the worst in the nation.
"Looking at his film, yeah, he's a great player," Bullard said. "I give him that. But there's a couple mistakes that he makes that we have to capitalize on those. Containing him, our defensive line should do that very well. When it's time for the DBs to contain him, I feel we can do that too."
Bullard said the team is "pretty confident" after wrapping up their second week of preparation.
"People say it's just a game, but for us it's our championship," he said. "We want to make a statement we can hang with any team."
