Did the Charlottesville mayor encourage and want violence in order to justify shutting down the protest?
Background: the governor and mayor had mandated this rally as "unlawful" and was vowing to not allow it to take place. The organizer filed a federal suit on freedom of speech grounds and a judge filed an immediate injunction against the local ordinance, allowing the rally to take place.
Now, yesterday, these assholes were met by other assholes in Antifa who came looking to fight. There are countless videos of brawls in the streets

However, now the Virginia ACLU is alleging that cops admitted to being told to stand down and not intervene in fighting until given an order. There is video of a brawl taking place with cops just feet away.
Another twitter video from an attendee shows a cop watching another fight and refusing to do anything about it.
Why was this the case? Surely everyone there knew there would be fights with Antifa showing up? How many people were injured and beaten who didn't need to be?
Could the car ramming asshole have been stopped in police were ordered to maintain order earlier and prevent assaults either way?
As despicable as the rally organizers were, and Antifa was, it appears the local government (or even state government) may have been pathetic in their handling of this as well.
