Fire Gus

Mack is in year 6 and he happen to have his best season in year 4 (2022) which was kind of a "contract year". They played for the ACC title with a 9-5 record (although they did lose the last 4 games of the season). That bought him time for 2023 and now 2024.

Gus has nothing to hang his hat on in year 4. 4-8 or 5-7 season, losing a large amount of the 2-deep, and we are trending downward. Seems like an easy decision to me. There was a thread on here not that long ago and I put a big diatribe on it about how ADs need to rethink how they hire and maintain coaches. First deal is 4 years with optional 5th, after that 3 year deals with no options (or whatever someone thinks works). It's year 4 and I would not renew, and I'd move on.

Why does everybody say we can't afford a $12 million buyout? Utter non-sense. Certainly not optimal but that's the stakes at the highest levels.

https://www.blackandgoldbanneret.co...was agreed upon that, new TV contract kicks in.

"It was agreed upon that UCF, Cincinnati, BYU, and Houston are to receive a fixed lower share of approximately $18 million in 2023-2024 and $19 million in 2024-2025 from the media deal, and then get a full share starting in 2025-2026, after the Big 12’s new TV contract kicks in. The payouts for these four schools are to come from the payouts the remaining eight were receiving from ESPN and Fox. To make up for it, the eight would then recoup those funds from the exit fees of Texas and Oklahoma, per CBS’ Dennis Dodd."

Once we get to the 2025-26 season, UCF — and the other 15 schools — get full drops. The final annual revenue total under the new media deal with ESPN and Fox would push into the range of $50 million per school. The new deal will run from 2025-31 and include a Grant of Rights provision."

When the only two people that don't want you fired are 1. The #1 (and only) member of the Guz Malzahn fan club and #2 A guy who doesn't really have any defense for you, but is so hung up on a Dino Babers post from this message board from about a decade ago, (by someone who almost certainly doesn't still post here, and could be dead for all we know) that it seems to have severed his grip on reality, it's not a great sign for the job you're doing.
Hire Dino!

Normally I would say give him one more year because it takes time to build a program, but there just isn't any sign that things are starting to head in the right direction at the end of Year 4. Obviously the win-loss record has been worse each year he's been here, but even if you look beyond that there aren't any facets of the game where you see improvement. He's resorted to reshuffling the 2-deep through the portal every year so there's no internal development. Most of his high school recruits haven't seen the field. He continues to ignore the defensive side of the ball and places no emphasis on hiring quality coordinators. It seems like he just goes cheap every time while the great coaches invest heavily in great coordinators. And of course he can't get the QB position right even when he actually has one in the locker room. Why would next year be different? It honestly feels like he's checked out. He looks and sounds like someone whose heart just isn't in it anymore.

Exactly. Next year will be no different.

Very much like the Heupel situation but we somehow got lucky and that worked our for both sides....I'm talking about him leaving and us getting a bunch of money out of it, and we didn't have to pay him out of his contract, etc....

Only hope we can have for enjoying next season is if Gus will admit his filling the roster up strategy with transfers
was flawed and that he is willing to not just step down from play calling as OC but to let a new OC step in who will totally open up the offense.

One can dream...
Not to mention a DC that can teach fundamentals, like how to tackle!

Um I gotta call bull on you. by your twisted, no risk logic in 2016, we should have stuck with Brent Key (or maybe another O'Leary protege Geoff Collins) and the trajectory UCF was on. I mean, he was coach/coach in waiting a year after a historic UCF season and we should have given him at least 7 years to prove himself. Which means right now we are watching Memphis in the Big 12.

Can you even remember the hot coaching names in 2015 because Frost wasn't well known. (great outside the box hire by DW !) The hot names were Matt Cambell, Chris Ash, Jason Candell, DJ Durkin, Mike Norvell, Bronco Mendenhall.

As a matter of fact many National Publications thought Georgia dumping Richt for Kirby Smart was a horrible decision and Richt was going to light it up at Miami. Babers wasn't even the worst hire that year. That honor clearly would have been Muschamp or Durkin.
By your logic, we should have prevented GOL from retiring immediately, but allowed him to name the HCIW and become the AD.

Oh wait! That's what we did!

I.e., you guys speak at a 3rd grade level and cannot remotely follow the logic I speak of. Sad.

BTW, you would have already fired GOL after 2006, including screaming bloody murder after the beat down at Florida any way.

I’m not interested in reading your 1,000 word responses, but since you brought up my era…

Citing GOL is a completely different scenario. That era of UCF football involved lesser expectations, FAR less talented rosters at the beginning of his tenure, much smaller athletics budget, etc. You’re comparing apples to oranges.

There was no reason not to be patient with O’Leary back then. No NIL, no fanbase pressure, no on-campus stadium (no worry about season-ticket holders), no assumption we could do better than him.

UCF owes Grandpa Boom no benefit of the doubt. He had one or two good years with a different school, they had no issues axing him. But keeping him in this new UCF era (Portal, NIL, P4, expectations) is detrimental, completely different than O’Leary. Hold this “L”.

Exactly! Which is why you do not even understand why I said, and often get it wrong. And you wonder why when you guys 'get on me,' I don't care? You don't even stop to understand what I'm saying.

Am I? Or is it the exact same type of 'growth spurt?'

Ummm... that's not what I remember. In fact, the recruiting argument and kids allegedly not liking his offense was the exact same argument. In fact, I'd say GOL was 10x more of an issue thka Gus in that regard.

No wonder some many of you guys repeat history, or at least want to take after some of the worst blue blood moves.

Has nothing to do with it. I'm worried about us shooting ourselves in the foot like Auburn, Nebraska, Florida and others.

UCF isn't the premier G5 any more. We're just another Big XII program now.

Well, some of you guys are so certain about it... go for it!

I still remember a scene from Path to War where Donald Sutherland (Clifford Clark) directly asking Alec Baldwin (Bob McNamara). Too many of you guys are exactly like McNamara.

McNamara (to Clifford): Clark, I think you scored some terrific points in there, I'm so glad you were arguing the other side.
Clifford: Well... you believe what you've said
to the President, you're certain we can win?
McNamara: Well, I sure hope there's no mistake in my confidence on the President's part.
Clifford: Well, that's not what I'm asking.
McNamara: Clark, I've seen the charts, I've run the numbers, everything else is... soft, speculation.

And then, later on, I have to become like Clifford... because you (McNamara) committed us to Gus, like Vietnam, but you don't want to deal with Gus any more and your 'soft speculation.'

Johnson: Are you now saying that we have no choice but to continue to match them man for man?
Clifford: Well, you made that decision, Mr. President, we are there, you have convinced the American people that we should be there. I see no alternative but for you to make your best effort to win.
Johnson (ranting later): I couldn't believe my ears! Cifford about-facing, McNamara goin soft!

I noted Gus would be another GOL, and would require the same commitment. I was not big on Gus, but did note we wouldn't have to worry about him leaving, which could be it's own benefit, especially with recruiting.

But you guys are out there, literally transmitting how we're not committed to anything, forget Gus, which undermines all our recruiting. You're pulling a McNamara and Vietnam, and refusing to answer for your 'soft speculation.'

This isn't trading stocks on the market.

It's committing to a system and strategy. If you weren't sure in the first place, don't do it, don't even argue it. But once you do, don't undermine it!

ADDENDUM: Not a shocker we made the same mistake in the F-35C like we almost did on the F-111B. McNamara attitudes all over the place. They should teach anti-McNarama speculation and universal solutions to everyone.

Don't wish to get into the GOL debate but it was indeed a far different time in College sports and in my opinion a much better one.

@Bring Back Wackadoos just wants to b*tch and take shots at UCF's great coach. Everybody knows Gus is in the midst of turning this thing around. This talk of retiring is a joke.
