Informative articles about today's win over ECU

Matt Williams set a new American Athletic Conference record for threes in a season and is also five away from tying the UCF record for career threes. He now has 246 and trails only Jermaine Taylor, who hit 251 from 2005-09. Congrats Matt! I am so glad he decided to stay at UCF. Without him this season wouldn't be what it is.

It would have been ugly, no doubt.

Quick look at next year and just how hot Banyard has been:

Outside of Banyard during the last 3 games...Williams (37.5% in conf play) is really UCF's only 3 pt scoring threat.

Next year, UCF could have 3 wing players that can all shoot 40% or more from downtown (Dawkins shot 44% at Michigan last year), so with multiple 3 pt shooters on the court at the same time, that should actually open up the lanes and space for driving guards and/or interior passes to Tacko.

Also, with more 3 pt shooting options...it will give Dawkins the option of going with the hot hand...something he didn't get to do this year (Matt's had some off shooting nights but there were no other options obviously).

Now some of those players might be a bit rusty after redshirting, as for some, it can take a half of season to get back into real game sharp shape but overall, UCF should have a better outside shooting team.

Now Banyard...a player who couldn't make a lay-up just a few weeks ago (scored just 12 pts in 7 straight conf games), has been unconscious from 3 pt land over last 2 weeks:

@ Cinci: 1-1
UCONN: 3-5
TULSA: 4-4
@ECU: 3-3
-----------------
11-13 (85%)

What was good/needed in the ECU game is he is still getting to the hoop as well (4-6 from the field), as most of the time, he has a size mismatch on his opponent...so he is not just sitting/waiting behind the 3 pt line for all his shots. (UCF needs his rebounding too).

With BJ Taylor's poor 3 pt (and FT%) lately, Banyard has helped pick up some of the slack...as Matt isn't forced to put up as many attempts as in the past (he was 3-6 from 3 pt land yesterday).

Good news is that the odds that UCF as a team will shoot as poorly as they did from the FT line yesterday (37.5%) probably won't happen again...as UCF will need as many made FT's as possible in the next 3 games and obviously during the AAC Tourn.

Nice to follow a sport's team that you are looking forward to the next game! We haven't had that the past couple of seasons.... Go Knights!!!

"UCF will stay on the road and play at Temple on Wednesday. The Knights and the Owls are scheduled to tip-off at 7 p.m. from Philadelphia with coverage on ESPNU and FM 96.9 The Game."

Dawkins made a great point after the game about "learning how to win on the road" -- that's crucial now.
Back to different players stepping up: we win if BJ is not the scoring leader. This time Matt and Nick did it. But BJ hit short jumpers and muscled layups high off the glass. AD used his length for steals resulting full-court dunks (5 in three games).
Turnovers are way down and steals and assists are up, so even when an opponent is well prepared for us and shooting lights out (like ECU was), UCF can still find a way to win. Really coming together as a team.

Never seen Dawkins so excited! Thanks for posting

I like how Johnny actually COACHES. Donnie did none of the sort.

Johnny went to the old play of: BJ drives hard to the bucket. If he misses the shot, tacko is there for the rebound...or BJ gets fouled (BJ was 1 for 4 free throw shooting though).

The coaching play changes come throughout the game strategically (unlike Donnie Jones)

Right. It was like Donnie didn't scout the opponent, work up a game plan, or work on it during practice. The announcers mentioned how they watched ECU practice they draw Tacko out and pass to cutters under the basket. UCF players discuss in post-game interviews how they prepared for opponents' tendencies and to deny certain players touches. Of course, unlike Donny, Dawkins does have the luxury of going to his non-existent bench at critical times; we'll see that next year.
