Let's talk realistic replacements for George

I'll say it again - somebody that can friggin recruit. When the national pundits are tweeting messages to the effect "UCF not even getting second tier recruits anymore", that's very embarassing. How the fukc is Willie T and S. Florida out-recruiting us given how we've blown them away last 5 years (Fiesta Bowl, top 10, academics, winning record, conference championships, etc. ) ?

This is all on GOL for not hiring a stellar recruiter and instead hiring Brent Key's buddies like Moogridge, who can't coach, can't recruit.

Yeah cause it's not like the aac is filled with young former coordinators who surprised most pundits by taking aac jobs. Oh wait, it is filled with those young coordinators.
In Mr. Spavitals case, however, he is an SEC coordinator with no ties to Florida. All of his ties are to Oklahoma, Texas, and Missouri. He is making $486,000 with bonuses that could push his compensation into the $3.5 million range over the life of his current contract. You are paying GOL, what? $1.2 million in total compensation, iirc. That's probably fifth or sixth in the conference. Former TU offensive coordinator Chad Morris made that at Clemson as an OC. SMU had to double it and offer him a chance to move him, his wife, and his family back to their ancestral home where he was one of the most respected high school football coaches of the last 50 years. Tuberville makes an obscene amount of money, like $3.2 million. UCF doesnt have that type of cash and they won't get someone like Spavital by offering money he could leverage as a coordinator and expect him to move into a recruiting area where he has no ties. And if he decides he wants to leave Texas A & M over money, those idiots will match the dollar amount quick I am sure. I'm surprised anyone on this board would actually want someone who was a graduate assistant five years ago. I know you want to win, but that is crazy. Lots of people wanted Spavital to come back to Tulsa where he played high school football. TU wouldn't even think about it. Don't be surprised if he joins the staff of another former Tulsa Union QB and Bill Blankenship protege, Justin Fuente, when Fuente makes a jump into the SEC or Big 12.

GOL gets paid $2 million

Cristobal best record at FIU was 8-5, a record that would have fans here pissed at O'Leary. The only time he won the conference was with a 6-6 record. He ended seasons 7th, 5th, 6th, 1st, 4th, and 8th. And, he recruited 1 player- Hilton. We're better off with what we have, and I come to this site every day hoping for a big announcement- new AD, new coach, new OC -Anything! Key thing is, if he's our AD, nothing exciting is going to happen. I have to admit, it would be interesting to see if Cristobal could do anything here, UCF is a better place than fiu, and we can always can him when his coaching brings mediocre seasons.

All these young coordinators are a bad choice. Sure they're the hot name in coaching and would bring in some exciting recruits for a year but as soon as a P5 job opens up they're gone. It's not worth it for a short term injection, the thing with GOL is he was in it here for the long haul. We need someone else who's been around awhile, is a bit older and looking for his last coaching job not a stepping stone.

I was going to post that exact same comment. I see a lot of names on here of young coordinators, but lets be honest, that hot names are going to be going to Power 5 schools. We would not even be on their radar. Mark Hudspeth, if I am thinking of the right guy, is an older coach who has a successful track record. I really like someone like a Houston Nutt, if he would be interested in the job. For someone like that, it could end up being a legacy job. Sort of like GOL, the last head coaching job they will have. I like Nutt because of what he did at Arkansas, he played a physical style of football and was able to compete in the SEC, recruiting in Arkansas. Having grown up there, I can tell you, there is more talent in 8A district 5 than there is in the entire state of Arkansas.

You do realize that Nutt is considered a joke in college football because of how much he begged for jobs at random teams and how he ran ole miss int the ground. And these hot coordinators are going to P5 jobs, just like Herman and Chad. Morris, right?

GOL gets paid $2 million
That's only if he maxes out the incentives - like the BCS year. The contract is out there on the web. The guaranteed compensation is $1.2 or $1.5, something in that range. UCF likes to advertise $2 million, but it isn't being paid that. Todd Graham reportedly had a $4million deal at Tulsa after incentives. He never made that much and the school would never entertain telling people that.

I would be ok with another older retread. Just duplicate the South Carolina model where the coach leaves after 10 years.

All this really is premature. But, since we are going here, my 2 cents.

If you are going with a coordinator:

Brian Schottenheimer (probably not spelled right but you know who he is)
Steve Spurrier Jr.
DJ Durkin
Jake Spavital
Sonny Cumbie
Doug Meacham
Ed Warinner
Kirby Smart
Or Scott Frost

I am not one to hire coordinators though. I would rather hire a known winner even if it means hiring from small schools.

Skip Holtz, USF screwed the pooch on this guy.
Randy Shannon, would be a great recruiter
Mike Bobo
Mark Hudspeth
Matt Cambell
Joey Jones
Doc Holiday

Hey lets get the Rice coach. We can pay him a fraction of the cost and probably graduate students at a high rate. I mean thats whats most important to the program right? We can still compete for conference titles and be warm up fodder for P5 teams.

David Cutcliffe. Anyone who can take Duke to a few bowl games is a damn good coach.

61 years old. I think he's ready to ride his career out at Duke.

Don't think he would go to a UCF - or even a South Carolina dangling 4 mil a year.

At least this thread does have some realism ... especially the compensation issues and bolting for a P5 program.

If the next HC doesn't have ties to Florida recruiting, his staff needs to. I would love to see Randy Shannon here as DC. He's a great recruiter, coach, and cleaned up the "thug" element from Miami. I don't like the idea of Shannon as HC. Not all coordinators should be head coaches.

For all the negative regarding GOL, I am proud of the fact that we have athletes who graduate and are "good citizens". We need to continue that with the next regime, but don't forget the win column!

Frank Wilson (LSU – running backs / associate head coach / recruiting coordinator): Wilson has more than a decade of coaching experience in the SEC at programs such as Ole Miss under Ed Orgeron, Tennessee under Lane Kiffin, and LSU. He also spent one season at Southern Miss under Larry Fedora. In 2002, Wilson was the state of Louisiana class 4A Coach of the Year and a finalist for national high school Coach of the Year. He is widely viewed as the nation’s best recruiter and has established a proven track record of developing players, most notably by the five running backs drafted out of LSU in the last five years. LSU currently has the No. 1 recruiting class in America for 2016, and if the Tigers finish with a top-five class, it will be the first time in school history with three straight top-five recruiting classes. Wilson is the recruiting coordinator and associate head coach at LSU. He helped LSU win the 2011 SEC Championship and coached in the BCS National Championship game. Although Wilson is the highest-paid non-offensive or defensive coordinator in college football at $660,000 annually, he has not priced out of the C-USA and Sun Belt Conference level jobs.

Oh my. Him or Durkin are perfect.

Greg Schiano? Rutgers' entire team was from Florida at one point. NY/NJ don't even care about college football and he still won. He would definitely be successful at UCF. I bet he could land a 4 star every once and awhile with your resources and his connections to the high school coaches down there.

I'd be for it. Schiano or Chizik. Both are proven winners at the college level as HC from power leagues. Both would run a very GOL-like program with no-nonsense discipline and a consistently strong defense so the transition would be pretty smooth IMO.

Greg Schiano took Rutgers from horrible to average.

when are people going to learn that if you hire a retread again then we will end up in the same place we are now.

UCF hires some up and comer who has fast success, guess what happens? He's gone first decent P5 job available. The alternative is that he has no success and we fire him after a couple years while everyone cries about how we hired someone with no track record of HC success. Schiano is 49 years old. 20 years before he would reach GOL's age. Chizik is 53 year old with 16 years before GOL's current age. Find a guy like Chizik or Schiano who may be willing to continue to build on what GOL started. I'd rather take someone with a proven track record who can give us a decade + of stability. Or, really, anyone but Key! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
