Let's talk realistic replacements for George

HELLLLLLLLL NO.
when are people going to learn that if you hire a retread again then we will end up in the same place we are now.

A retread that stays for 10 years is a good model, like USC. One legend hands the program off to another legend.

Or a guy who doesn't give a shit that ends up setting the program back because he doesn't care. See Houston Nutt and Howard at fau.

tl;dr but I've always said that UCF can set precedence with hiring and saying with coaches with checkered past. Bc of that, Jim Tressel will be UCF's next coach.

I don't know about Tressel, but this line of thinking is why I wouldn't be against looking at Leavitt. He has the personality that players love to play for, he knows defense, solid recruiter and getting his 2nd chance in USF's conference would give him a little added motivation.

Oh geez some of you won't be happy unless we're wheeling out GOLs dead carcass to monitor the staff and comfort the huggers who is afraid that replacing him will net worst results. You cant get any worse than a potential 0-36. Change is eventual.

I wasn't saying that Houston Nutt was Vince Lombardi. But I believe he won 3 SEC eastern division crowns at Arkansas. The same division as 'Bama, Auburn and LSU. He was run out of town because he and his family didn't get along with Mitch Mustain (QB prospect that eventually signed with Arkansas, but Nutt didn't throw the ball that much and later benched the kid for Casey Dick- see Darren McFadden, Felix Jones and Peyton Hillis as possible reasons why not to throw the ball every down). Also, he didn't run Ole Miss into the ground. He lifted them up. Ed Orgeron ran that program into the ground. Reports were that he ran the program as sort of a tyrant and bullied the players a bit. I believe his first season there they beat Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl. I remember the end of the game and the Ole Miss players holding up a sign that said 90% of the country was wrong (reminds me of another team that had no chance against a Big 12 heavyweight). I think they had a decent second season, and then the wheels fell off the bus- high expectations and lackluster recruiting (they missed on a few kids they thought were going to be great) and he was forced to resign. But if you go back and look at his track record, he has won at a lot of places, including Boise State (5-6, but they were something like 2-10 before he got there, then he left for Arkansas after one season). We could do a lot worse than Houston Nutt. I don't know what kind of recruiter he is, but he is a pretty darn good game day coach. Some of the best games I have ever seen involved his teams. 7 OT's vs Kentucky, 5 OT's vs Tennessee, 3 OT's against National Champion LSU (he won two of those games). He is also the only coach to have beaten 2008 national champion Florida, also at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. He also coached a two time Heisman runner-up. Your right, we don't need a coach like that. I mean I guess he has a bad track record and all. I mean the last guy we took a chance on who had an image problem was GOL, and look how that has turned out.

Jim Tressel is currently the president of Youngstown State University and this is the last year of his 10 year show cause. He will be hired at a big program next year or he will stay President at Youngstown.

Cristobal - great recruiting ties, I think he has been rated #1 recruiter for the last 2 years. Took a horrible FIU team and made it relevant. Basically was fired because the AD Peter Garcia is nuts. Unfortunately he will be the next coach at UM (could be soon if UM loses to Cincinnati tonight)

Wilson- Very intriguing.

Bob Stitt - up and coming coach of university of Montana. Known as an offensive genius.

Butch Davis - Known to want to come back to coach and looking for his "last job". Has recruiting connections but also lots of baggage.

Art Kehoe - Huge recruiting connections. Legend at UM but would he leave?

Kyle Shanahan - would need $$ and would he leave the NFL where he will be a head coach someday.

Jim Leavitt - Just to piss off the USF fans. :boxing:

Skip Holtz - see Mike Leavitt

Bill Clark - UAB. I'd like to see more of a resume though.

Mike Shula - he failed at Alabama. Is the second time a charm?

Here's another couple of names to throw out there:

Chris Klieman - North Dakota State - has won FCS championships as both a coordinator and head coach. Haven't seen his name mentioned yet.
Tony Sanchez - UNLV - he's only four games in there but it seems like he's already made perennial-cellar dweller UNLV a bit more competitive. UNLV's situation in the MWC financially is...bad. This is an option if we're stuck with GOLLLL for a couple more years.

Personally, I would prefer someone with solid head coaching experience at a lower level G5/FCS program than a retread or hot-shot coordinator from the SEC with P5 HC aspirations. That said, I'm also in favor of

Matt Campbell
Bob Stitt
Mark Hudspeth
Willie Fritz
Jeff Brohm

DJ Durkin was the 2012 Rivals.com Recruiter of the year award winner. I think that's worth a mention.

Just talking about Frank Wilson or Durkin makes me sad. GOL will continue to be the coach for 2 years after this one and Key will stay his OC

If Miami fires Golden there are rumors that Cristobal would be a top candidate.

Wilson, Durkin, or Pruitt would all be good hires for UCF.

Yea me as well. I looked at the Durkin Bio and it's exactly the kind of guy we need and so I know Hitt won't go for this guy. Durkin has been on Urban's staff and now his second stint with Harbaugh this time as DC. Dude was also the rivals recruiter of the year a few years back and has Florida ties. It does make me sad because I know the UCF job is a great job and the school won't even open up the search for a real candidate.

Ive been listening to some of that Knight Podcast as of late especially the Kyle Israel commentaries. I dont know if his future is in broadcasting but if he decides to take a detour he might make a decent college football coach someday....kinda like Spurrier returning to Florida except without the Heisman Trophy...you know?

Then again maybe i should hold off until Kevin Smith starts doing the same. [cheers]

I like Durkin and Collins personally (Or anyone that will give us all black uniforms). But I really hope Beckton stays on. I know its hard to do that when a new coach comes in and wants to pick his own position coaches, but Beckton has done a lot and I think the players really respect him.

I am super excited that Danny Barrett will take over as intrum HC. I'll tell you alittle story.

Danny was our RB coach. He made me want to run through walls at practices. A true motivator.

So one day at practice, a LB made a mistake. George chewed him out in front of everyone, rightfully so. The LB mopes over to the sidelines. With his helmet still on to hide the shame and his shoulders slumped down in embarrassment, Danny goes over to the LB, puts his arm around him, and said something to him. The LB immediately perks up. He stands tall. That's the day I was sold on Danny as a coach.

Over the years of practices and many meals with Danny, I've become convinced that he at least deserves an interview as UCFs new HC.

Too bad that Jim Tressel is virtually a lock as UCFs next HC.

Thats what i was afraid of when they made him Interim Coach. he's going to rally the players like Bo Pelini did at Nebraska. Shouldnt we be moving on from the GOL era for now?

I say go with someone from the Urban Meyer coaching tree. Keep Barrett on or on call. I think its important that the program doesnt rely on just one person but a couple of them to assure its success.

Danny should have been given the Key push

I'm still convinced that Charlie Taaffe was the main reason for those 5 years of success. Charlie should get an interview too. Both Charlie and Danny have HCing experience in the CFL. I think that translates to cfb very well but it's a higher level which is even better than a coach who only has cfb experience.

And screw Urban Myers and Jim Levitt. The best thing UCF can do is stick with the people who have been there when we weren't that good. We have a chance to set cfb precedent by attracting coaches with long term job security. That could pay huge dividends down the road.

Ideally we need someone with Florida ties who will recruit in state and build some pipelines for the future. Coach Kelly's players are gone now and this year has shown how important they were and how important he was. It's time to get back to that

the McMurphy article made it seem like Hitt wants someone from outside the Program. That doesn't mean Danny wouldn't get an offer to stay on the next staff but I bet the new AD wants someone completely new from outside the GOL circle as the next HC.
