Gabriel puts me to sleep with this interview and tone...

...learning to be patient...I know this where God as put me...logo to me means family...a lesson to be learned?...a breathe of frea...

I don't usually care about UCF players who transfer out, but I hope we have a chance to trounce this clown in 2024.

I think he got tired of being compared to Milton at UCF because as good as his arm was he wasn’t KZ. Any team who watches videos of games at UCF where he lost will know how to beat him. First have a good rush on the side of line he throws from 🙂

I don't think he will play in 2024, if he keeps the job this year I think he commits to the next draft.

Was going to bet he'd be benched at/by TCU as they see diminishing returns, but who do they have to replace him?

Odds are he will succeed this year. Probably not drafted, but has better chance than Milton ever did, Gabriel's arm talent/strength was better as a freshman than Milton as a Junior.

His arm is better but his size is a big deterrent. He’ll either be late round or UDFA. Probably practice squad guy for a couple years and then released.

When Bo Nix left Auburn, it was kinda shocking. I thought he was a good quarterback who was put in compromising situations by poor offensive play calling. I wish Bo the best at Oregon and hope he earns an invite to New York.

I don't have the same feeling with Gabriel. I respect the effort he gave against Louisville, but there is something about him beneath the surface that doesn't sit right. He has an air about him. My prick meter tingles when he speaks. He said he would "run through a wall" for his current head coach--a direct shot at Gus Malzahn. I'm glad he's gone.

The nail polish he wears is a bit weird. He has a good deep ball. No other opinions about him from me. I’ve never met him. The stories that came out about him are concerning but people tend to say bad things after a guy leaves.

You talking about Bo or Sockboy?

The truth is, DG feels he deserves more respect and attention than he receives. He feels he should have been a legitimate P5 player right out of high school and he didn't get the offers he thinks he deserves.

DG is also a player that is very strongly self interested. He will always put himself first in all scenarios. He plays and treats football as a business rather than an enjoyable game of sport.

DG is very atypical to UCF fans because we are used to having loyalists as our best players. DG is an opportunist, not a loyalist

That seems like a heck of a lot of assumptions unless you personally have spoken to him.

So Georgia and USC was not good enough P5 offers?

Also I would say goodbye to the typical player considering the turnover you have seen since 2020 across the board. Coaches are not loyal to schools, players no longer have to be either with the portal. And everything in College Football in the last year or two has been 100% business driven.

No, they were not because you have to consider an offer relative to a team's projected depth chart.

Georiga offered late in the cycle when Georgia had an entrenched starter, Jake Fromm, and High School phenom Justin Fields committed.

USC offered late in the cycle when USC had 6 freshman and sophomore QBs and High School phenom JT Daniels committed.

These offers were not realistic for him to ever see the field.

So he chose the most reasonable option, UCF, where he would get playing time and also has KZ as a friend/mentor.

I completely agree. I was not trying to characterize DG in a negative light. Those were my opinions on what makes perfect sense to fit his actions/words and what I believe is true.

was a big DG fan here before all the rumored drama during his final season but it is really annoying when players use religion as a shield for a decision

College football is a business that players use for the opportunity to try and go pro. DG is looking for the best opportunity to have that chance. I can't blame him for that. As long as he keeps the starting job it should workout. Now the fan base may not be as patient if they lose a few games.

Dillon Gabriel doesn’t play for UCF anymore, so how is talking about him even relevant? He made a decision that he felt was best for his career (Malzahn’s offense wasn’t an ideal fit for him, we all know that), just like so many of you have done in your lives changing schools/jobs. Coaches leave schools to advance their careers all the time, UCF fans should be used to that more than most fan bases.

UCF football is fine without him, we’re going to be more than okay with what we’ve got. All that other stuff is just messy drama. People claim that he was dramatic and immature at UCF, but he was a kid. You all are keyboard hero’s that are just as dramatic about this kind of stuff, and you’re grown adults.

I’m looking forward, excited about Plumlee, Keene, Castellanos, and the future of the program.

I have a bit of an unpopular opinion here. I am not 💯% certain Castellanos remains at quarterback at UCF. Gus has a history of signing incredible athletes at one position (quarterback for example) and moving them to another position at a later date.

Let's say guys like Kodi Burns, John Franklin III, or Joey Gatewood. Even Malik Willis. Just tossing out a couple of examples you guys are familiar with. There are a TON of others: Jason Smith, Jonathan Wallace, Chandler Cox, Kiehl Frazier, etc. etc.

I say this only to make you aware that when a bunch of top programs are recruiting a kid for a position other than quarterback, Gus *might* sign a kid as a quarterback, and the kid may discover he is ultimately better at another position.

Wash your mouth out. I want what I saw in the recruiting videos.
Of course you could be right too.

Castellanos certainly has the athleticism to play other positions, specifically running back. It may come down to getting him in the game as soon as possible. That's not a bad thing. In Gatewood's case he needed a change In positions to increase his chances of playing time.

It is possible that Castellanos plays quarterback. But only once in Malzahn's 30-year coaching career has a smaller athlete been placed at quarterback in an offense that worked. Nick Marshall defied reason. A South Georgia high school football legend, he could literally play any sport.

Castellanos has some Marshall in him. Enough to make Castellanos and Gus think he can play quarterback. It may happen. If not, Castellanos will have a bright future as an offensive weapon at UCF.

My caution about the former is Malzahn has a better history of playing transfer quarterbacks than those he develops out of high school. In the age of the transfer portal, that isn't necessarily a bad thing. UCF's starting quarterback in 2022 is likely to be a transfer. Three of the past five Heisman trophy winners have been transfer quarterbacks. UCF is an attractive destination for transfers. Castellanos can play multiple positions if quarterback is taken. It's a win win for UCF either way.

Fair points, you could be right.

But I still think he stays at quarterback, at least in the immediate future. He’s likely to get more reps in practice as the 3rd-string QB/scout team QB this season than he would as a deep depth RB or WR. Those rooms are pretty full at the moment.

With only three scholarship QBs on the roster, he’s an injury away from competing for a job this season. Now beyond 2022, who knows. Like you said, who knows what the transfer portal might bring down the road.

Fans frustration with the program since 2018 is directed at Heupel, Shannon, and Gabriel. Despite that even in losses Gabriel's average performance is twice as good as Keene's best game. He was supposed to be the face of the program, and so he takes the heat.

Gabriel came 100% because of Milton, and Milton sold him on Lebby and Heupel. When all three left he questioned why he was staying. Gabriel left and rejoined Lebby who was successful together and Lebby has been successful in Ole Miss getting Corral drafted. Now they reunite in a program that has had unbelievable success in the QB position in the last 5 years.

Tatum Bethune leaves UCF as he establishes himself as a top player, to go to a program that is not doing well and rejoin a coach that has not been successful. Jaylon Robinson also used spring game to create audition tape for other teams. Both seem to be more concerning for fans.

Some may argue that Gabriel chose to sat out last year instead of play. Odds are he made the decision early on he was going to trasnfer, let the staff know. Malzahn and Gabriel decide it was best interest to play Keene. Had Gabriel finished the season and then left would have put the team in an even worse position.

Gabriel didn’t let the staff know early on. They wouldn’t have let him hang around the program if he told them he was going to transfer. You’re reaching to put his actions in the most positive light.

Not any different than where people are trying to paint his actions in the worst possible light.

There was stories floated on here that teammates were aware Gabriel checked out after injury, seems hard to believe staff was unaware. Having Gabriel removed from the team right after injury would have created a media circus for the program along with having it play out on a documentary for ESPN.

It was Malzahn that had to convinced Gabriel to stay when he was hired, I can't imagine Malzahn ever felt truly comfortable with Gabriel commitment.

I'll bet the transfer portal will have a giant effect on coaches asking players to change position. Bet that tendency falls off a cliff. "Move to WR? OK." end of year "BYE"

Last thing to remember about DG was when we picked him up he was a verbal to Army, Army? I can’t figure that out knowing his arm and his lack of running skills. Gus cut him lots of slack in the running department. Bottom line is DG is not going to be who he thinks he will be at the new stop. Remember he was losing the game when he was hurt. Our defense was bailing him out. He sucked win against CINN too.

I think the most frustrating thing about DG is investing in him, and then not getting to see if it pays off. He was a really good Fr and So college QB. We just don’t know if he’s hit his ceiling or there is another level yet to be seen. I don’t think 2021 would have turned out much different, though, even if he didn’t get injured. We probably win the Navy game but already lost the Loserville game, and we got slaughtered against Cincy and SMU. Before getting injured he looked a lot more comfortable running with the ball, which was something he looked scarred doing before. He just needed to demonstrate better decision making, which usually comes with playing time and maturity.

I guess we’ll see what happens. There is so much churn on college rosters now it’s hard to predict how any team is going to end up.

In the Louisville game Gabriel was 22/29 with 3 passing TDs, a rushing td, and a receiving td. While the defense gave up 500 yards of offense.

And the crucial interception on a throw that absolutely can’t be late and behind the receiver but was.

DG checked out after that game but that doesn’t mean that he let anyone on the team know it. It’s the self-promotion while injured when he should’ve been busting his ass trying to get back. Character reveals itself.

Hit the receiver on the lead shoulder dude. Should have been caught.

If a QB throws for 75% completion and produces 5 TDs and still is the most important reason the team lost, then Gabriel should have a big head because the rest of the team has no responsibility.

As for busting his ass, you are right he should have been like Jaylon and Tatum going out there to use playing time to audition for other programs.

Fans have every right to be unhappy with his departure. It's just become this revision of history where he is the scapegoat for everything that has gone negative with the program since 2018 that is not put on Heupel.

I like to think of myself as being able to read people well, and said plainly, DG just rubs me the wrong way. I don't remember him being this way at the beginning of his UCF career, but listening to the kid recently, he has certainly been quite lackadaisical and blase about things. Things have gone to his head and I for one won't be rooting for him.

The difference between him and MM is night and day.
