Spring Exits

I'm not real bothered by Tommy leaving. He is too small. Going forward, I'd like us to start using 6'2"+ type of men at QB. Tired of watching these 5'10" shrimpy kids running around (MM was an exception).

Blake Bortles looked like a man out there on that golf outing.
If you liked watching BB play….(if you didn’t) you should have seen Daunte Culpepper play in person….he was a true sight to behold.

This is what I'm talking about...our latest recruit with verbal commit.

The writing is on the wall for some of the QBs like Thomas.

As a Junior he has no shot beating a true freshman?

This isn't a case where Castellanos was recruited by the previous coaching staff. The coaching staff sat there and praised about him all last fall on how he could win as a freshman. Now he is too small and doesn't fit the team?

Either Malzahn can't figure out what he wants the offense to be or the staff is completely full of it when they talk about their players in press conferences. Either way it seems to become more apparent that outside of Plumlee, the staff struggles to maintain relationships with QBs.

For all we know this kid could be the next Tyler Harris at this point if he even decides to stay committed.

I want to offer two possible explanations.

No. 1, Gus promised Thomas Castellanos a shot at playing quarterback, with Gus knowing that Tommy had zero chance of ever playing quarterback and offered him the opportunity in order to fend off programs like Georgia and Clemson, who wanted Castellanos to play his more natural position: running back, safety, cornerback, etc.

In this case, Gus's gambit worked, but Castellanos refused to accept a position change after a year and a half of not being able to play quarterback.

Over the years, Gus has made a living out of signing high school quarterbacks and giving them a shot at the position before moving them to a new position. The list includes Kiehl Frazier, Jason Smith, Chandler Cox, Woody Barrett (twice), John Franklin III, Malik Willis, Joey Gatewood (twice), Kobe Hudson, J.J. Pegues, and Caylin Newton.

-- Or--

No. 2, Gus really turned the reigns over to Darin Hinshaw and Hinshaw didn't think Castellanos had a future in the quarterback room.

(Obviously, the answer is not No. 2 because Hinshaw is nothing more than Gus's puppet.)

"...staff is completely full of it when they talk about their players in press conferences" Just to be obvious, can anyone name 1 coach that isn't full of it when in a press conference? Hardly are they ever talking truth, it's either some crap to hide something from opponents, something to gin up a player to do better, or some other crap. Still amazes me that anyone actually listens to them. "Hey, I'm giving 150%... go to depend on my 'brothers'..... we aren't as good as we could/will be.... this defense/offense is going to be amazing (said before the 5 win season).

I don't think we can assume Hinshaw is Gus's puppet until we see nothing but the same old Gus offense. I fully expect to see both the old and new offenses in a year of transition ( at the worst. ) However, depending on how the season goes it should morph into whatever Hinshaw has cooked up. If not, then I'll agree with your puppet statement. 🤪

Won't find many who remember this guy, nice reset. My favorite distressing QB from that era is the "statue kid" Schneider. What a horrible set of QBs that year.

With all of JP's limitations throwing the ball, why would someone think we will change the offense drastically?

All of the QBs after Schneider and before Blake were average at best. Most below average. Was some boring offenses. Kevin Smith made that 1 year fun but the rest weren’t.

What in Hinshaw’s resume gives you confidence about this “Hinshaw Offense”. The man is 50 years old and is calling plays (supposedly) this year for the first time. He was an analyst at UCF two years ago. Gus Malhazan has a long history of surrounding himself with Yes Men…Hinshaw is one of them. This is still the same offense as before controlled by Malhazan.

Sometimes yes men are good. There's less push back and Gus can focus on more important things.

The TC transfer is making sense now. Probably going to Texas State with Kinne. Probably called him up and told him he’s got a good shot at the starting job there. If we’re wondering what changed, that’s probably it.

TC's path to playing time at running back is muddled at UCF, but he will be a Day One starter at RB at Texas State behind QB Malik Hornsby. It reminds me of when Bobby Petrino moved Michael Bush to running back behind Brian Brohm. Both ended up in the NFL.

Whaat? So, TC will switch to RB (a position he never showed any interest in with us). And he'll win the starting RB job even though all of their top rushers are coming back. Really? And what are you smoking? More than likely TC will battle for the starting QB job and will probably end up as a backup, a position he left at UCF. And since Hornsby is the favorite to start and the starting QB from last year is back, TC will have a battle to get to #2. Gotta be a better place for him.....but we'll see.

If he wants to play FBS football, yes. He has blown his only transfer opportunity. If he wants to play, he will help the team by accepting the role he is given. Otherwise, he will have to try his hand at the FCS or D2 or NAIA level.

Not everyone is cut out to be a quarterback.

If he is a "football player," he will do everything in his power to play. If not, he can just be a footballer I guess.

I think TC can beat out Lincoln Pare.

Malhazan failed to develop talent at Auburn and the same goes for UCF.

You think he transferred because a guy verbally committs to come in a year? No one on roster cares who is maybe coming in a year. Especially a 3 star. All of our QBs were 3 stars.
TC watched the coaches bring in the USF transfer at QB after they told him he was the man. Than this...

"On 4-7-23 =>
ORLANDO, FL- Gus Malzahn and UCF landed another big time player from the state of Florida with wide receiver Kason Stokes announcing his commitment to the Knights. Stokes adds a much needed speed threat to the UCF wide receiver corps, running a 10.87 100M Dash while in the 10th grade. The 6’2 Armwood High School (Seffner, Fla.) didn’t have the most productive junior season, leading his team in yards per catch (minimum 3 catches) and touchdowns. Over the course of the season he caught the ball 15 times for 372 yards and 6 touchdowns. He is the younger brother of Ohio State defensive back Kye Stokes who played in 6 games as a freshman putting up 12 tackles and recording a forced fumble. UCF quarterback commit Riley Trujillo commented on Stokes’ ability to Knights247 saying, “I’m trying to build the best class for 2024’s, and I know he would be a big part of that so I reached out to him.”

Trujillo and Stokes have bonded lately with the recruitment process with Stokes informing me that the pair are working on getting together to throw routes. Stokes also touched on a big reason why he chose UCF, the relationship between himself and UCF coaches Grant Heard and Gus Malzahn. “They all just seem to really care, and have a genuine passion about me and the game of football.” He hasn’t yet set up his official visit with the Knights, but did mention he’ll plan to make it during the Summer. "

Huge Freeze and Bryan Harsin have coached Auburn since Gus Malzahn. Of course, I should expect a Miami fan to live in the past.

AUBURN, Ala. — In the first 25 years of the modern seven-round NFL Draft, Auburn never had more than five players taken in a single year.

Now, in back-to-back years, Auburn has surpassed that mark.

Six former Tigers were selected during the past three days, matching the program record set during the 2019 draft. Although Auburn was projected by some analysts to get to as many as seven or eight selections, this weekend was still a step forward for its growing draft presence under eighth-year coach Gus Malzahn.

“I think it’s great for the future,” Malzahn said of his program’s recent track record in the draft during a conference call Friday. “It shows that players can come to Auburn and go to the NFL — reach your goals and dreams, get a great degree and be developed. These guys want to be developed, and I think it says a lot about our coaching staff."

Malzahn produced 40 draft picks as head coach at Auburn.

Meanwhile in Coral Gables...

Now I know the U stands for Undrafted Free Agent.

I don’t see anything in that, that would make me transfer now when a guy might come in a year and he 3 years behind in learning. Has nothing to do with Trujillo. He left righ after spring for some other reason. They had to have told him he’d never be the starting QB.

LOL. Freeze has coached at Auburn? Don’t be more of a clown than what you already are. That’s on Malhazan…developing nobody at Auburn for a decade and at UCF for two years. Meanwhile:

Miami had two first rounds drafts picks in 2021. UCF had four 1st round draft picks in its entire history. UCF and Malhazan swinging and missing …nobody getting drafted this year. Dudes not getting developed and leaving. The best players also bolting. Lol Gus Malhazan.

a miami fan and an auburn fan going at it on a ucf board. miami historically is a great nfl factory, but in modern times they are positively auburn-ish who have been historically a weak producer of nfl talent considering the caliber of recruits they get.

I can only forgive you for being an idiot so many times. That Tweet pertains only to 5 ⭐ recruits.
LOL. So Malhazan can’t develop 5*?! Dude was fired for not been able to develop QBs at Auburn, for being unable to recruit top OL and for surrounding himself with Yes Men. See a pattern at UCF?

Pattern of no losing seasons?

Y'all should break out the Turnover Chain every time TVD commits a turnover. You will use it a lot more.

You are a Malhazan shill. 3-6 in bowl games as a head coach and has NEVER won a NY6.
Bro, Miami and losers like you would troll the universe to have a 3-6 bowl record. You currently have a 1-11 bowl streak, and that’s in very bad bowls. Like, come on man, troll better, just do better.
