Spring Exits

Jennings and Lewis had every red flag possible, but the staff was determined to fit them in last year. Along with Gatewood, seems like staff is determined to shoe horn players.

Having followed Gus his entire collegiate career, I can attest that he has never cut a player. One or more of a few scenarios are work here.

A. Gus has matured as a head coach and understands the importance of every scholarship.

B. Gus is allowing his position coaches to dictate who each assistant does and does not want in his position room.

C. The players see the writing on the wall and are transferring for an opportunity to find somewhere they can actually play.

I am good with all three.
EVERY coach in the past couple of decades has cut players.....they just don't call it that.

He didn’t even wait enough to see if he can get playing time. I mean, who is going to pay NIL to a player who redshirted…nobody with any business sense, that’s who. You gotta at least give a place a few years to see what is going down. As we all know, the landscape can change quickly.
His name wasn't mentioned during the spring game. Not sure if he made the field. I really thought he was going to be a player for us.

The portal now shows him 100% committed to Texas State. The problem with that is two other recent transfers, one from Baylor (who I know nothing about) and Malik Hornsby from Ark who will play rings around TC, a real bitch slapping.

I was really stumping to get Hornsby here in the Winter portal, but Gus being Gus being loyal until getting stabbed in the back (when a real friend stabs you in the front) made no move.
Tommy committed to BC, I’d imagine. So much for 100% CB.

Best news since NSD!

Good riddance to the chick eaters.

But before you go, please take... https://ucfknights.com/sports/football/roster/patrick-barnett/13869

Thomas Castellanos was never going to be anything but a running back at UCF. I applaud Gus for having the guts to be honest with the kid. Now UCF has a roster spot to take a real difference maker at the quarterback position, who will allow UCF to compete for a Big 12 title in 2023. This is the final season quarterbacks can transfer anywhere any amount of times without having to sit out. I am glad to see Gus taking advantage of it. Give me anybody the caliber of Mikey Keene or better.

Ethan Mort is not a Power 5 player. If he cannot break the lineup this year at UCF, he never will. UCF lost three starters, and Mort didn't put a dent in the two deep.

Keahnist Thompson (next to Quan Lee) is the most overrated player Gus has signed. UCF was paper thin at defensive end last season and didn't consider ripping off his redshirt. That speaks volumes.

Moving forward, UCF has a chance to sign a quality offensive lineman, who can play multiple positions (Ethan White, Caleb Johnson-ND, or Michael Wykoff); a versatile defensive lineman (Jeffrey M'ba-type); a couple of quality linebackers (Jaheim Thomas, Jurriente Davis, or TBD); and a safety, who can actually cover.

And of course....

A Championship-caliber dual threat quarterback...

uat, ole piss, gawja, a ohio state university, nebraska, and Rkansas -- all eyes on you!

P.S. I wish the outgoing transfers the very best and, in all seriousness, take Patrick Burnett.
Here’s the Malhazan shill explicitly stating that Malhazan pushed TC out which we know to be a LIE. The fact that you people let this guy get away with his bs is comical. I’ll keep posting here and hammering as long as this fraud/shill is around. Clown.

Malhazan bringing a replacement form Charlotte with two portal offers: UCF and Kent State. Can’t even make it up.

Pushing Castellanos out and being honest with him are two entirely different things.

Gus or someone under Gus told the Castellanos he isn't a quarterback, and I applude Gus or whoever had the guts to tell the truth.

Joey Gatewood WAS NEVER a quarterback, but no one had the guts to tell him and Gatewood wasted his entire career trying to be something he wasn't. He could have been an NFL or CFL tight end.

Castellanos CANNOT transfer again until he graduates unless he drops down to the FCS level. He will probably "practice" at quarterback through next fall, but when it doesn't work out--abd it WON'T--Biston College will ask Castellanos to be a running back or a slot receiver.

Either he will accept that he is NIT a quarterback or he will finish out his career at a desperate FCS or D2 program.

End of discussion!

The kid is just not that good. Not a D-1 QB at this moment. Could he develop? Maybe. But developing doesn't mean starting unless someone is injured and they're desperate. I like Timmy a lot better for backup than I do Tommy.

TM while playing in a G5 conference: 55% completions, 5 TD and 7 INT.

Is it so inconceivable that after watching TM with the scout team all year last year learning the system that he just passed TC? The way some people are posting seems to suggest some of you think that's impossible?

I think they gave TC spring 1st team reps and gave him time to shine (out of loyalty). When they had their post camp coaches meetings and gave their evaluations he was just not as far along as TM. Someone sat him down and said "listen going into fall TM is #2" he didn't want to be 3rd on the depth so he left.

I don’t know, I just don’t buy it - that’s not how things work. If McClain was “farther along” than TC, then he would have gotten a lot more reps in the Spring Game than he did. McClain has never played a snap at UCF outside of the scout team in Fall practice. No coaching staff would ever want to hide him/protect him. He’s not a secret weapon or anything. He needs as many live reps as possible.

Showcasing TC in the Spring Game to “be loyal” to him is not a thing. He was #2, McClain was #3. After the Spring Game, TC changed his mind and didn’t want to sit another year, so he left. It doesn’t seem that complicated.

Yeah I agree. You don’t hurt the team by sitting the clear number 2 out so the 3 can get film and transfer out. That’s not how you run a successful team. Now Timmy hasn’t played anything meaningful in well over a year by the time he sees any real game reps. That would be dumb. I think Thomas thought he was 1 and left.

That's what I think happened.

Is it possible? Yes. Will Gus be leaving sooner rather than later if that’s what really happened? Yes. It’s insane to not let let a guy play in Spring. Every QB should have played equal. Including walk ons. He’s mishandling the entire position from the day he arrived.

I suppose the odd choice would follow suit with all the other choices Malzahn has made with the QB position, Gatewood strategy, burning Castellanos redshirt, ect.

Not changing offense to fit DGs strengths. Not sure if Mikey is great but if he lights it up at Fresno it will add fuel to the fire. I hope JRP has a top 5 year at UCF or everyone will be second guessing going all in on him.

I really hope Hinshaw can cook up an offense that can play to our strengths. I know he has been talking vertical passing game to stretch to the field, which will open up our running game but a lot will depend on how JRP progresses in his reads and ability to pass downfield.

However, there is only so many variations of an offense you can have, the better teams can adjust in game to take what the defense gives you. Maybe having Hinshaw dedicated can allow us quicker adjustments.

Any word on Branden Jennings? Has he caught on with anyone yet after hitting portal?
