The NFL vs. Patriotic Americans: The OfficialThread

I still watch NFL football. I like it.

I still like the NFL. It's just gotten really boring the last 4-5 years as I've gotten older. I really have better things to do than sit down and watch commercials, time outs, huddles and listen to a couple guys bullshit for three to four hours. I watched last night's Packers game in about 15-20 minutes. Did the same with the Maryland game last weekend. Live games are still enjoyable, but watching on TV is just play awful. This is really where the NFL is losing viewers.

I would like to see the percentage of people that stand in front of the TV when the national anthem is playing. I also bet people going to their seats at the stadium or waiting in line to buy beer, hot dogs, etc., pause and wait for the anthem to end.

They've rarely ever played the anthem on TV except for the SB when they have big acts. They just started doing it lately for ratings. If I wasn't at my seat I've always stopped and found a flag if I heard the anthem being played. Seen that from a lot of people, not everyone though.

The games still get in (most of the time) in under 3.5 hours, unlike college football, which is ridiculous. I think there is something to the product on the field. I think there is a lack of marquee players, especially at QB, playing right now. It's too heavy with Brady and Rodgers and then everyone else. Most of these guys would never have sniffed the field at the position in he 1990s.

That likely has a lot to do with it. I'll start paying attention again in the playoffs but the NFL has really turned into the MLB. The regular season is useless. There are only two or three divisions that aren't predictable and that's only because they have a bunch of awful/inconsistent teams. All the rest you already know who is going to the playoffs. Patriots, Seahawks, Packers, Steelers/Ravens, Chiefs/Raiders. NFC East and South have some good teams sometimes but neither are consistent, AFC South is just full of garbage.

I almost wonder if there are too many teams. This Los Angeles experiment is becoming an epic failure. Jacksonville has no business having a team, add to that the jets, buffalo, Cleveland, and a bunch of other teams mired in mediocrity, and it's just really difficult to get decent matchups every week.

Tv choices for the games can blow depending on the week and the market you're in. Also, I wonder if the Thursday night game is saturating things. A lot of people don't have the NFL network. There has to be a better system for fans to get all the games on a week-to-week basis other than a) having DIRECTV or b) going to a sports bar. Yes red zone helps but it's not the same.

After working for 50 to 60 hours a week and then working the property and stuff, I like sitting on my ass on Sunday's. I'll do barbecue or smoking or some simple chores while sneaking in football on tv. It's a great thing.

Admittedly though, it would be nice just to watch a game without the extra shit involved.

Not enough good talent to go around. The Packers have been in a national spot every game so far and will be again next weekend. Five weeks in a row, I can't remember that ever happening before and GB isn't that good. They're sloppy and have been playing shit teams. The NFL is living off brands right now and not good football.

You're old though, lol. I can't sit down and watch TV if the sun is out. I'll just be thinking about all the shit I should be doing, it's a never ending list. I've tried it, I just get ancy and anxious and start walking in circles. I get it from my dad. We were out pressure washing his back porch the Sunday afternoon/night during Irma. Bored as hell with absolutely nothing to do but we had gas and the well was running off a generator so why not.

Yeah, that's probably true. My energy levels have dropped and I do like to sit on the weekend when I havea chance. Football is a good excuse to do just that. Besides, I get up at 3:15am M-F and I'm typically kind of whipped when the weekend rolls around.

Fox Sports Undefeated Host Joy Taylor was "triggered" on their Friday Show when discussing what happened the night before after 99.9% of Packer Fans (and a few Bear Fans) refused Aaron Rodgers request to link arms during the anthem and she basically called them racists, sexists, anti religion haters and against inclusion. (Most stood with their hands over their heart while military veteran saluted the flag).

Taylor said in a rant: "It shows like I wasn't surprised Donald Trump won the election. People say one thing in public but in private they reveal their heart. This is a perfect example, you had an opportunity for something as simple as link arms with the person next to you to show that your for inclusion, to show that your not racists and your not sexist and your not against other people's religion, simple thing and it was too much for you."

Who knew she would be triggered by fans putting their hand over their heart or with military veteran saluting the flag during the anthem.

ucfbs, im guessing you didnt watch the full video of the bennett incident. at first i was on his side, but then i saw the video. dude is an idiot.
I'll have to see the video for myself. Thanx for the tip.

BTW, if you didn't read my full post, at the end, you'll note that I was comparing Bennett's on-field actions to that of a white surpremist Nazi, and is totally unjustified (regardless of whatever may have happened to him or not).

Yeah. At my house we have turned it into an afternoon where everyone is home. My wife and I do food prep and meal planning for the week so we can eat healthy meals from home no matter how busy our week is . Same with lunches for school etc. We eat a nice dinner together and hang out . Kind of like it was with families back in the day , when families managed to spend time together. This time of year NFL football is part of that as well but we aren't glued to the couch

Your football Sundays sound almost exactly like mine, except for my wife does the majority of the cooking for the week without my help. She'll pile up the laundry for me to fold while I'm watching football sometimes but that's okay because it's easy and it gives me an excuse to not leave the couch. She also likes me to grill, bbq or smoke so she doesn't have to worry about dinner. Shoot, my daughter even drove over from Sanford last weekend to watch the Jags and Bucs with me and my son. When the wife is done cooking she usually foes off to the bedroom to watch something else though, which kinda sucks.

I spend a lot of Saturday watching a TV for college football. I couldn't take 2 days in a row of football all day. This past Sunday I peeked in at the Bucs game for a while, got bored, and went back to doing stuff outside.

The NFL is an absolute snoozefest compared to college.

The NFL is just stale. They all run virtually the same offense now. Games are slower, and typically lower scoring. Outside of maybe 5 stadiums, the rest are pretty cookie-cutter lacking any lore or uniqueness.

Contrast that to college, where you have teams running the west-coast / spread / option / etc..... You have unique stadiums all across the US, bands playing fight songs, cheerleaders at every game, unique traditions (clemson's rock, war eagle, the Seminole planting his spear, ND's sign, gator-chomp, etc....), different uniforms, etc...

If I'm limited in my watching time, I guarantee I'm watching college football over the NFL.

This is something I've always strived to do as a parent. The goal is every night but with the kids getting older it makes it more difficult. I hope and pray that this is at least one things my kids will take away and do when they become parents.

Yeah it’s not possible every night anymore but whenever possible . It’s so important

NFL players have every right to disrespect their country's national anthem ... and I have every right to not like them for it.

I'm not going to stop watching my favorite teams, although, I will probably cut back on just wasting time watching teams I don't care about. I went to a game this past weekend when I was on a road trip. Fans were all discussing who was kneeling after the anthem and not happy about it. These are people I didn't know .... and have no idea of their political leanings. The NFL is going to have to deal with that at some point or just live with the consequences.

The best analogy I can think of is the MLB strike in the 90's. They lost a lot of fans for a very long time after that. Took them years to get them back.

I would just like to thank all the NFL players in Las Vegas that stormed the gunman on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay resort. Oh wait, those the very cops the NFL players were protesting...

Mike Pence decided to spend over $250,000 in taxpayers dollars to show up to an NFL game before leaving "in protest."
Of course, this is nothing but a PR stunt to keep our citizens divided, angry, and not paying attention to the real issues.

And geniuses like @btbones give Pence a big thumbs up!

This was a cringe worthy blatant publicity stunt that only inbred trailer trash could possibly be stupid enough to fall for, designed to only further divide the nation all to stroke Trump's ego.

Pathetic.

So Pence is evil but it was OK for Obama to fly everyone to Ferguson after a cop killed a guy that robbed a store and then assaulted/tried to kill that cop? When does the hypocrisy end?

Why is it that you are completely incapable of defending this administration's actions without referring to Obama?

another weekend for not watching the NFL for me. honestly dont really mind at all.
I watched both the jags and packers game yesterday, which is unusual for me. I don't let the NFL games direct my Sundays anymore. If I miss a game because i'm out with someone or doing something that's fine with me. Shits typically boring anyways. Hell, even when I'm watching football on Sunday, i'm doing house chores or cooking.

Hahaha .... chemmie is now outraged that a politician is doing PR stunts? Wow.... out of touch with the real world much?

So you are not outraged? You're ok with it? Not really surprised.

So you asked if I was ok with it ... then said you were not surprised? Answering your own questions now?

Unlike you and chemmie, I'm don't really care anymore.... republican or democrat. I just got finished with 8 years watching Obama do PR stunt after PR stunt. Trump doing it now is no different. It's all a show. All for the narrative.
