Transfer Portal is now open

Kind of unfair to say “If JRP doesn’t win 10 games next season” when stepping up to a P5 league with much better competition or that Gus has “run off DG, Keene” as he didn’t even recruit either of them in this NIL/Transfer Portal era. They clearly didn’t fit his style of QB, DG being a total fake self centered “me guy” wanting to throw it deep every play and Keene being a great guy and teammate but ultimately NGE. TC I felt was a great signing, I really liked him in Gus’ scheme and thought next year (the future) he would be the guy for 2 years. I have no idea where he thinks he’s going to go to win a job, at a P5 school nonetheless and start next year. I feel like this is either a bad decision by him/people around him or he got beat out by TMC and was going to be QB3
I'm really kind of tired of hearing about his style of QB. Perhaps there aren't that many of them around, and there certainly don't seem to be many of quality who want to come here. I don't care if he recruited them or not, the fact is he "ran off winning QBs because they supposedly didn't fit his system. Maybe it's time for him to get a new system. I thought good coaches suited the system to the players they have or can attract. Anyway you want to look at the QB room it doesn't look good for Gus or the program. Will we now be hearing the QBs don't fit Hinshaw's system. I am tired of betting on finding the once in a lifetime dream QB. Get the best you can and develop a system around them and the rest of the team.

Lol, you guys have a disaster throwing the ball at miami. Your spring film is like a Benny Hill musical.
LOL. Are you serious? Plumlee is not a P5 QB. He has a mediocre arm and is wildly inaccurate on long throws…usually under throws the WR on those.

Dude is a one look, quick throw to the LOS and hope the WR can break some tackles. Plumlee locks in on one guy, never goes through his progressions.

Even worse, he is easily confused by different defensive schemes…basically can’t read defenses. On third and long, dude is lost…confused and starts running around in circles. Turns the ball via fumble or interception on the money downs.

Lil General JRP faced three mediocre ACC defenses and got easily handled.

TVD -- 1,844 yards, 7.3 average, 10 touchdowns, 5 turnovers.

JRP can do that with his legs.

Who knows what happened and in today's transfer and NIL rules this isn't surprising. When it comes to adversity kids have a quick outlet now. Pretty sure after the spring game last year flash was talking to the press and it sounded positive and the next day he was in the portal.

So Gabriel is a me guy because he wanted to throw it deep to WRs? So that makes Plumlee the ultimate team guy for wanting to tuck the ball and run while the WRs throw their hands in the air begging for the ball.

Plumlee maybe a team guy, but the program/university is certainly trying to frame him as a me guy with all the focus on him without delivering anything yet.

Not surprising….Gus was really reaching for him as a QB after missing on Singleton.

And for those complaining about T-Mac not getting much spring game time, could be slightly injured or he already locked up the QB 2 gig and they just wanted to see how close TC could make the competition…..survey says not close.

Gus made a career decision by not picking up another option last Winter….

As a counter argument, I think the program is just trying to get media attention. We got coach Prime and Kyler Murray to comment on the JRP baseball/football game. I think it's all a publicity thing, that has value for our program especially at a time when there are no stories

Which is fine, but you are spotlighting a single player vs. the team. Along with flying in private jets (paid outside the school), jumping from game to practice vice versa. Teammates can take issue to that.

People wondered if NIL would cause a rift if one player is getting tons of money and the spotlight while the rest are doing the same with none of the perks. This is not the same case, but it is a case where one player is deemed not like the rest, and as of now Plumlee hasn't proved that on the field like Milton did.

"The transfer portal will shut again on April 30."

I kind of like the transfer portal. It's an interesting dynamic in college football now. Those coaches gotta work extra hard now and you can really improve the roster quickly. Meanwhile, players can improve their stock and experience at other schools. For us fans, it is kind of nerve wrecking. But, it's just entertainment for us. It's an interesting dynamic.

Idk how anyone can listen to JRP in interviews and think he isn’t a ME guy. I mentioned the optics of giving him pro boxer treatment with a private jet before this Tommy news

Actually, a distaste to Gus Malzahn weeds them out. He must abhor brains and talent. He now has driven away three good QBs. May UCF go 0-12.
I was at the spring game and rooting for TC but other than the one TD pass I wasn't impressed with his passing game. He seemed to struggle with seeing over the OL. He does great when he gets outside of the pocket.

We will have more talent coming in now that we are a P5 program that will most likely give us a whole different set of QBs in the near future. Don't get too attached to who we have now. Personally, I would love another QB built more like Bortles, tall in the pocket and able to make a first down running when necessary.

Just think, had Malzahn been at UCF when McKensie Milton was on campus he would neer have made the starting lineup!
Probably true. Unfortunately, I think most coaches have certain measurables they look for and Malzahn definitely likes bigger QBs. I liked TC a lot and thought he had a strong arm and great running ability. He seemed to have a great personality and a great teammate. Really wish he had stayed. He was an explosive football player who played well as a true freshman and flashed lots of potential as a QB. Hope he plays qb and balls out.

Couple of notes about the transfer portal.

No. 1, I do not see a lot of plug-and-play Day One starters in this spring cycle. I do see guys who could be rotational players.

No. 2, There are plenty of Florida kids at defensive line and linebacker.

No. 3, I do not see many in-state safeties, but I am curious why UCF hasn't offered Antonio Carter.

No. 4, I do see quite a few developmental offensive linemen from Florida or from places Gus recruited while at Auburn.

Gus Malhazan is failing magnificently. There are almost zero OL on the roster that can be developed. Two young OL guys left between yesterday and today. All that’s left are a few mid transfers…that’s it.

Funny how Herb Hand got a promotion to Co-OC? Why did he get a promotion AL1? Hand has done nothing and has failed as a recruiter everywhere he’s been…specially at UCF.

Again…why did Malhazan promote Hand to Co-OC? Because Hand raps and tries to do the worm? Or maybe because Hand is a Malhazan Yes Man? I’ll wait for your answer AL1.

So much to unpack here…and yeah, I’m going to go on a little rant here for you and alike.

By all accounts, Plumlee is a great teammate and treats/gives praise to all behind the scenes support staff. Nothing or nobody has said otherwise. Tuck the ball and running by either design or as you and everyone who watched clearly could see our OL pass protection collapsed fast. Your hero Keene had tons of pressure and sacks also with no time to throw, and he didn’t tuck the ball and run. Even he as a pocket passer had trouble. Id bet that he prob had more sacks per attempt than JRP. WR throwing their hands up? Who can go through progressions with no time to throw? No idea what argument you are trying to make?

Gabriel was selling socks and sitting out when cleared to play laughing on the sidelines not leading, checked out. Selling socks and other goods up to the moment he left, distancing himself from the team. Not playing while cleared to play is a quintessential “selfish” me guy.

If JRP didn’t get hurt he’d been an easy 3,000/1,000 qb, which you’d be lying to yourself if you wouldn’t have taken that beginning of last year. Don’t even @ me about all the dropped passes either, we all saw that. He’s basically an athletic freak playing his first real year of qb and was clearly our best option. 2nd year starting is usually a big jump, so let’s see.

Some of you have a weird attitude towards him and an even weirder affinity towards Keene. MK was a great guy, good leader but he averaged like 160 passing yards per game for his career and couldn’t run. What are we even talking about? Probably one of the least productive QBs we’ve ever had. There is a reason that what JRP is doing has gotten national media attention…because it’s so rare and hard af! He should be commended, revered for his efforts and his accomplishments for our university yet petty jealous assholes like you and many others want to just break him down. It’s PATHETIC. He’s my sons favorite player and if you heard his entrance he was cheered. So I chalk it up to a bunch of you sad know-nothings just want to bitch just to bitch and come on here as an outlet to do so b/c no one in the real world gives a shit.

You do realize this kid initially failed to qualify academically and walked on after the late signing period. He enrolled July 1, 2022. All of UCF's high school signees were inked during the early signing period in December 2021. I cannot fault the kid for entering the portal for a chance to sign a real scholarship.

Also, a word about Herb Hand. There isn't a coach on UCF's staff who has been more influential than Herb Hand. What he has done with UCF's offensive line room has been incredible. Since Feb. 18, 2021, Hand has been responsible for adding eight of the team's 14 current offensive linemen, including four projected starters for the 2023 unit. Hand has signed four coveted transfer offensive tackles over the past two years. Only tight ends/special teams coach Brian Blackmon comes close to the success Hand has had so far.

If you want to trash a UCF coach, rip Grant Heard, who has quietly accomplished nothing, but losing Christian Leary to Georgia Tech.

So what? What are you even talking about man? He’s on scholarship…he is not a walk on. You are a low level snake oil salesman…gaslighting these fans here with your b.s.

Again what has Hand done to deserve a promotion? Malhazan and Herb Hand have recruited two full classes at UCF and signed a total of four high school OL. 247 Composite rankings: .8664, .8548, .8514, and .8442. Maldonado (.8548) is now gone. Three dudes left. Epic failure. There’s nothing you can say to defend this. Just zip your trap.

I don’t understand your infatuation with criticizing MK when he’s gone….other than still trying to convince yourself that he’s a terrible QB. MK proved you wrong once again.

Last year….His QRP 159 was better than JRP’s. 134. His sacks per attempt 13.8 are basically the same as JRP’s 12.4. TD passes JRP 1 every 24.7 attempts to M’s 1 every 13.8 attempts….that’s almost twice as many passing TDs per attempt. So no, JRP doesn’t overwhelmingly avoid sacks more than MK as you claim….despite his better running ability.

Yards passing per attempt…once again MK is better 7.8 to 6….so your depiction that MK is one of the least productive QBs ever would make JRP an even worse Passing qb.

MK is clearly the better passing QB while JRP is clearly the better runner….so for all of this talk that JRP is so much better than MK …the stats don’t bear that out as MK leads in most categories Per attempt …..and you can’t brainwash critical thinkers into believing that.

“He’s basically an athletic freak playing his first real year of qb”…..geee, but you didn‘t give MK a pass when he was a true freshman last year?….JRP has been a college football player how long.

btw…I love JRP and think he’s an exciting, athletic unicorn who I root for every Saturday…but to claim that he’s some great qb right now that is so much better than MK is completely false.

You can easily replace MK’s name in your quote…..“He should be commended, revered for his efforts and his accomplishments for our university yet petty jealous assholes like you and many others want to just break him down. It’s PATHETIC.”.

The truth is UCF needed to institute a two-quarterback system in 2022 and was successful when it utilized one and was unsuccessful when it did not. The coaches said so over and over: "We believe we can win with both guys." And they did.

Mikey Keene (IMO) should have been the starter based on principle and John Rhys Plumlee should have been given ample opportunities to cone off the bench until he settled in as the starter or as the backup. Instead JRP "learned on the job" and the results were sketchy at times.

John Rhys Plumlee had two fourth-quarter possessions inside the red zone against Louisville with the game on the line and failed to convert. Against better competition, JRP locked on his primary targets and failed to go through progressions when he had time and when he did not have time during obvious passing downs. When his mobility was limited in the championship game and in the bowl game, his limitations were exacerbated.

Mikey Keene had his share of limitations as well. He struggled to escape the rush and threw the ball away early to avoid a sack too often and too late. He had a slow delivery, failed to put adequate zip on the ball, and was indecisive (i.e., "held onto the ball") when coverages were muddled.

But together Mikey and John Rhys made UCF's offense formidable and difficult to prepare for. They created incredible matchup problems for defensive coordinators. Only Army was able to create a scheme to defend both MK and JRP effectively.

UCF needs another viable option at quarterback not other than JRP, but in addition to JRP as it enters the Big 12. Right now that's...

They ignore the MOST important evaluation characteristic, mental! Size, strength and speed are nice measurables but they don't mean squat if you can't read a defense, anticipate, feel the pocket and I could go on. Malzahl lacks the ability to value any of that. That is why he will always be a crappy coach!

The only prep commitments Hand has lost are Jamal Meriweather, who signed with Georgia, and Leyton Nelson, who signed with Vandy. I cannot explain away the Nelson situation in 2022. Something inexplicable happened.
