Trump finally helps PR

Well it's good but I'm watching CNBC in the PR and hey said their issue right now is not getting ships in, it's the fact that their offload areas are at capacity and there's not enough local trucks and drivers to clear the area fast enough

Ive seen videos of people trying to drive around down there. trees blocking roads, mud slides, roads washed away, or roads still under water.

Fun fact: the 1920 Jones Act is essentially an updating of the original act passed in 1789 that restricted inter-US shipping to US vessels and merchants

I watched a story on it last night, I think it was the PR Gov saying their port is stacked with containers and supplies, they just can't get them anywhere due to the roads.

Direct quote. I shit you not. Our president literally said this.

So what?? Fake news! He's just helping people understand that PR is not an island on a lake. Or a river. And the ocean is in fact larger than any lake!

There's nothing more Presisential than helping citizens understand water topography.

I mean I guess I can look on the bright side: at least he didn't say "bigly water".

Now he just told PRs that they are lazy and need to work harder to fix the island

His tweets today have to be a low point. I'm not sure how you defend those words.

It was low class and totally uncalled for. Very crappy.

Then again so was her decision to use last night to make a speech like that. Did she really think saying those things would make things better?

I've seen reports and interviews with FEMA that she is refusing to work with them at all and won't even visit the control centers to help coordinate. Yet she has time to make tshirts to wear on the news. Also hearing reports from police officers that the Puerto Rican government is not allowing anything to be distributed. Makes sense since everything is just stacking up at the port.

Stuff at the port is not FEMA. Fake news

Oh- I just read this woman cheered when a convicted terrorist was released by Obama, and then offered him a job. A guy who participated in over 100 bombings which killed or maimed dozens.

Don't worry guys, Trump just dedicated his golf trophy to the people of Puerto Rico. Who needs clean water when you have the Presidents Cup golf trophy?

FEMA is not the first responders, Local n State, or in this case Mayor and Governor is responsible for the first wave of relief. Not blaming them, but they were totally overwhelmed. Here on the mainland help can be 6 to 8 hours away once storm clears. That could not happen in PR. Ports closed, Airport mostly closed, roads not open for what supplies were coming in. We saw a touch of that in Nawlins, where 3 of the 4 main roads in were closed. They will get the help they need, but logistics are horrid.

FEMA does not repair the roads, electrical grid, peoples homes. they provide supplies and long term help, with the recovery. PR has been a dumpster fire for a long time, hopefully this will cause the people of PR to finally clean their own swamp.

Agreed. Logistics are what is needed most. Food shipments are great, but heavy machinery and personnel to clear roads are badly needed. That would also allow power crews to move around the island.

hard to get those items to an island, especially when the airport and port both had massive damage.

dont now why army corp of engineers werent flown in immediately after they realized how bad the damage was. they need to clear the way for big trucks to deliver critical supplies

The FEMA guy on the ground said yesterday that it took 3 entire days to get trucks up to one of the ATC towers since there was so much devastation along the one road that leads to it. Three friggin days. And that's just getting there- it took days after that to repair everything.

I don't know how you deal with that any faster than it's going. This is an island that was completely ravaged who had poor infrastructure to begin with.

i saw the video of the mayor but ive also read several conflicting reports from various people. ive heard she hasnt even attended some of the joint meetings. im not sure who to believe, but eventually it will all come out.

Louisiana was the worst most any of us have ever seen.

So, simply put ...
- PR is 10x the population density of Louisiana
- PR has 5x the debt of Louisiana, with less revenue
And the obvious, but just to re-state ...
- There are no 'roads' or 'railways' to get materials to them

Ignoring the President's Twitter account, the US media is utterly clueless to the sheer, impossible effort there is to 'save everyone' in PR. Anyone with any money got out already.

Trump today compared the devastation in PR to that of Katrina, saying essentially that PR should be proud more people hadn't died. ""Every death is a horror," Trump said, "but if you look at a real catastrophe like Katrina and you look at the tremendous -- hundreds and hundreds of people that died -- and you look at what happened here with, really, a storm that was just totally overpowering ... no one has ever seen anything like this."

And then again blamed Puerto Rico for money problems by saying "I hate to tell you Puerto Rico, but you've thrown our budget a little out of whack," Trump said with a grin. "Because we've spent a lot of money on Puerto Rico and that's fine, we've saved a lot of lives."

Before mindlessly piling on I'd like to see the video. If he said the last part with a grin, it's probable he was clearly joking and people got it. And it's true- our federal budget is going to be totally screwed up having to pass 3 major hurricane bills at once. We're talking $200B+ for all 3 at least.

No doubt, but he never once said anything of the sort about Texas or Florida, and this is at least the second comment he's made about PR's finances being a drain on the US.

Not true. I watched him speak in the WH when Ryan and McConnell were there, and he talked about the financial burden of having to clean up Florida too.

Did he say something like "Florida, you're costing us a lot of money, but we'll take care of you."? Yes, he did say that the hurricane cleanup was going to be costly, but I don't think he really ever blamed Florida for it the way he's blaming PR.

He's clearly poking them for being indebted up to their eyeballs. Probably not needed but he seems to find it noteworthy.

Exactly. And considering that approximately 80% of the island's agriculture got wiped out, is already deep in debt, and now needs an infrastructure overhaul, it's not getting better soon. He's clearly adding insult to injury. Very Presidential.*
