Who is joining the Space Force?

Most folks understand why a separate air force branch was created in the 40s. But unless we're going to start waging star cruiser wars in outer space, the financially prudent thing to do would be to consolidate all 'space' activities under a subdivision of the USAF. It may capture your imagination to believe our country's defenses are somehow dramatically improved by adding yet another military service branch but our federal budget deficit says otherwise.
They are already consolidated under USAF Space Command. IMO A "Space Force" or something similar will happen within the next 20 years. The worldwide reliance on space and the ability to get up there is becoming increasingly bigger and easier.

I can give a list of programs under USAF and under the Army PM DCATS et al. that are damn near the same program but, of course, aren’t. There are still way too many stovepipes and fiefdoms. Pulling all of the programs into a single service that can cut waste and refine requirements would be a big improvement. Starting a new service can totally remove the institutionalized waste from the in place bureaucracies. Not saying it won’t atrophy from there, but a fresh start could help.

Thank goodness we elected these fiscally conservative republicans to office!

During the Obama years, Republicans were beside themselves saying that we needed to address our Federal budget. But once they had an opportunity to actually do something about it, those fiscal conservative voices faded away.

When you have leaders of both parties with no vision and no concern for the future other than their next election, it's hard to remain optimistic.

But on the other hand, we have a Space Force baby!!!! Yippiee!!! [eyeroll]

The USAF is also ignoring too many of responsibilities in the Sky-Space theater, just like they ignore the CAS and EW roles too. I love (NOT) how they have to rely on the US Navy and Marine Corps for too many things.

Trump signed a scaled back version of his plans for a Space Force military branch Tuesday. The directive, called Space Policy Directive 4, lays out plans for making Space Force a part of the U.S. Air Force, instead of its own independent military branch, much like the Marine Corps is part of the Navy.

Congress still has to approve the plan, but if passed, Space Force would be the first new military branch since the formation of the Air Force in 1947.

im glad our leaders are pushing for the base/headquarters to be in fl. obviously i want it here in orlando, but ksc probably makes the most sense.

hell yea! space force!

Space Force going to have a football team like Army, Navy, and Air Force?
Space Command will most likely be considered a unit of the Air Force; much like how the U.S. Marine Corps is under the jurisidiction of the Dept. of the Navy (hence, no USMC football team ... and whatever the Coast Guard is.).

But if they do manage a football team, let's hope they don't steal our Citronaut.

That's been the original plan since the late '90s, when this was first proposed. He's not the first President to support it, and even was against it originally, because "Mad Dog" was.

The Navy actually has more space-sensory and other capability than the USAF, with fully integration into its systems. The USAF just has more launch capability, which sucks up a lot of budget, and some rather huge 'gaps' in its abilities.

So a lot of the Navy and USMC have concerns on what will fall under this new branch, which is controlled by the USAF. At the same time, the Navy and USAF don't share their capabilities with the USCG and others. So there's a big 'push' about a new branch that is required to provide unified services for all branches.

BTW, in 2017, for 2018 appropriations, it had 60-1 support in the Congressional Subcommitee, all but one (1) Democrat was for it.

But after the Space Council was reformed, it recommended the segmentation, Trump changed his view. That's when Democrats 'flipped,' and are now the biggest hypocrites on the planet. Just a year earlier they were critical of the Trump administration's lack of support.

But if they do manage a football team, let's hope they don't steal our Citronaut.
It will be under the Air Force Academy. ;)
