Coaching Buy-out Value

Buyouts of coaches originally were put in place to TRY and RETAIN your coach...so higher buyout brought in more money for your school.

In the last, 10yrs that has changed where coaches now want MEGA buyouts to "retain" their jobs.

We now see the dichotomy of this relationship.

What does the Dungeon think is a reasonable buyout and why?

My take for UCF (at this time) is we have a modest buyout -- say 5yr contract with $10M buyout dropping $2M per year until it reaches $4m and keep it flat for duration. When we see the coach is becoming a rising star we can extend the contract with better terms ... until then ... keep the value low so it isn't painful to fire them if they don't perform.

For Gus, it should have been apparent to TTT this was his last stop. In that case, we should have never had a BIG buyout for Arthur.

Kevin Smith on transfer portal: “I probably would have left”

I’m sure there’s more to his mindset here but that kind of sucks to see it spelled out so clearly.

I was a student during K Smiths reign of terror.

I took my dad to the 2007 championship. He’d never really been bought in to Ucf football but Kevin smith won him over that season. He saw him rip off some long ass run at that championship and told me he’d never seen a guy run like that, he absolutely loved it. We had a complete blast that day. my dad died a few years later and we talked about that game often when he was sick - it was a great memory.

He’s always been a favorite alum of mine because his 2007 season gave me and my dad a really special afternoon to share for years after. Sucks that he would have just dipped out when his stock increased enough to go P5 but i guess that’s just reflective of UCF at that time vs UCF now.

[Ratings] The Big XII and UCF ... by the Sagarin's

UCF is 2-4 in the Big XII this year. Yet all 4 of the losses are against the top 5 teams in the conference according to the Sagarin Ratings (actually top 6, as UCF is #5!), using Jeff Sagarin's default and primary 'Central Mean.' Although there are others, they come in close in most cases.

BTW, Big XII even barely edges out the Big 10 as the #2 conference -- let me say that again, the #2 conference in the country -- although Big XII, Big 10 and ACC are all a bit below the #1 SEC.

Although the 'jump down' back to the AAC is over double the 'jump up' to the SEC. Look at those rankings, let alone Strength of Schedule (SoS), against UCF's old conference, the AAC (aka American). The AAC (American) is nothing in comparison ... NOTHING! Even the Big 10 SoS is not as good the Big XII, far different!

SoS of Florida teams:
  1. Florida #6 - one of the toughest, including OoC)
  2. FSU #12 - much tougher OoC than the ACC median)
  3. UCF #28 - it was #18 before Arizona, sub-30 is Big XII median
  4. Miami #54 -- yes, 54th!!! -- par for the ACC, median 50+!!!
  5. USF #79 - in UCF's old conference, harder than AAC median (a few OoC games)
  6. FAU #105 - also UCF's old conference, close to AAC median, 100+!!!
  7. FIU #139 - close to C-USA median
And ... the Big XII has the 'highest ranked bottom feeder' in #78 Arizona, while even the SEC has a lower #84 Miss St. Now 2nd lowest is #53 Kentucky, while the Big XII has #63 Houston.

But the ACC has #115 Stanford and #91 Wake Forest ...

While the Big 10 has #109 Purdue and #79 Northwestern.

Now let's look at top 50 ... both the Big XII and SEC have all but 3, the Big 10 over half, but the ACC?!
  1. Big XII & SEC: 13 of 16 (over 80%)
  2. Big 10: 10 of 18 (just over half)
  3. ACC: 7 of 17 (just over 40%)
The ACC has been 'easy street' for a long time, even before some of the Pac-12 was added. In fact, SMU -- coming from the AAC -- doing so well says a lot! I mean, not a single Big XII team has a SoS as easy as SMU. Cinci and UCF have done better than Houston, but the Big XII is really a lot tougher than the ACC.

The Big XII is a really tough conference! Far more than the ACC, let alone the AAC. People really need to 'reset their expectations' in the Big XII.

Gus-like clock management at the end of the Lions vs Bears game.

No sense of urgency. Bears lose.

Caleb Williams gets sacked with about 30-35 seconds left down 3. You have a timeout. Call it.

They screw around, and FINALLY throw a pass downfield with 7 second left. Pass is incomplete. Time expires.

They had a TON OF TIME for one 5-10 yard pass and a field goal attempt to tie it. Totally inexcusable clock management.

Game ends with a timeout never used. 🤦🏻‍♂️🙄

Road Trippin with Robert - West Virginia Edition

Our friend Robert (@2Letters2Words on X and Bluesky) is on a mission to check out the opposing team tailgate scene for UCF road games.

In this edition, Robert descends upon cold Morgantown, West Virginia, home of the Mountaineers.

Despite the less than stellar record for both teams, and some inclement weather, Robert found a very passionate WVU fan base. And moonshine. Robert found plenty of moonshine.

RJ Harvey appreciation thread

RJ Harvey is up there with Daunte for my all-time favorite Knight. Came to UCF as a walk-on RB after things didn't work out as a QB at Virginia. Was recognized immediately as a top RB on team and suffered a devastating injury. Worked his way to get back on the field and was a difference maker year after year, getting better in each and every season. Recognized as a hard worker before and after practice by coaches and teammates. Also quiet and humble; acts like he has been there after every TD. Had opportunity to leave UCF the last 2 seasons but stayed. A Hometown Hero and arguably the best RB in UCF history (this thread isn'tintended to debate this). On top of all that, he is playing today and risking injury in a game with no value. I know people are frustrated with the season but I hope people come out today to show their appreciation for RJ and leave the negativity for after the game. Thanks RJ for all you have done for UCF!

I bought these for myself before the season.
