List of top candidates, in no particular order...

to follow Gus to FSU

TE Randy Pittman -- chose UCF over FSU after being committed to FSU.

K Grant Riddick and P Mitch McCarthy -- FSU loses both specialists.

(Boomer to return to UCF.)

LB Xe'ree Alexander -- second leading tackler for UCF.

CB Chasen Johnson and S Christian Peterson -- Bright futures.

And of course WR Xavier Townsend ...

That last part made it all worth it.

Seriously though, I think the back story behind Gus resigning from UCF centers on the incident with Agiye Hall.

Gus had to have had knowledge of Hall's arrest and proceeded to get him enrolled at UCF anyway through UCF's football admissions office. Hall was a student at UCF for an entire semester before his enrollment was announced publicly. UCF must have had proof that Gus knew of the arrest, which in addition to the KJ Jefferson arrest (that Gus also had knowledge of), constituted unprofessional conduct, enabling UCF to fire Gus for cause.

I do not know if any of that is true. However, it simply does not make economical sense for Gus to walk away from a $12 buyout unless he knew he would lose in arbitration.

Defensive Coordinator Hot board

Who's your pick to take over the defense? I would hope we do a real national search for the DC position and not just stick with what's currently in-house. Here's an intriguing name I saw just looking at defensive rankings this year:

Bill Brechin - Miami University (OH) Defensive Coordinator
- In his third year as DC at Miami they currently rank #11 in the nation in defensive stop rate (the percentage of a defense's drives that end in punts, turnovers or a turnover on downs.)
- Miami's 2023 defense allowed just nine touchdowns(!) in conference play and held all eight opponents under their season scoring average.
- In Brechin's first year (2022) running the defense, Miami led the MAC in scoring defense (22.6) and rush defense (135.9) and forced 22 turnovers, a Miami best since 2014.
