Press release:

ORLANDO – Sytia (sit-TEE-uh) Messer, a 22-year coaching veteran who won a national title and made five other NCAA Elite Eight and 11 overall NCAA Championship appearances as an assistant coach, has been named the 13th head women's basketball coach in UCF history, vice president and director of athletics Terry Mohajir announced today.

UCF will hold a press conference to officially introduce new head coach Sytia Messer Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the lobby of Addition Financial Arena. More information to come.

Messer comes to UCF after serving as associate head coach at LSU for the 2021-22 season under 2022 Associated Press National Coach of the Year and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Kim Mulkey.

"Due to the great success our team had this past season, we knew we had to find a coach that could continue to elevate our program. It quickly became crystal clear that Sytia was the right coach for us at the right time," says Mohajir. "She has played and coached in multiple Final Fours. She has recruited and developed a long list of great players in the ACC, the Big 12 and this last year the SEC. She played a major role in a great run at Baylor, and she has been an accomplished head coach. Sytia understands what it takes to be successful on and off the court—and that will make her a great fit at UCF."

"We are excited to welcome Coach Messer to the UCF family. She brings to UCF a championship pedigree as a coach and player, tremendous success as a recruiter, and strong track records of winning with integrity and fostering student-athletes' academic excellence," says UCF President Alexander Cartwright. "We are proud of the incredible achievements of our student-athletes, both on the court and in the classroom, who have taken our women's basketball program to new heights with the enthusiastic support of Knight Nation. We look forward to Coach Messer further elevating our program – and our university – on the national stage."

As an assistant coach on Mulkey's staff at Baylor from 2013-14 through 2020-21, Messer helped lead the Bears to a combined record of 260-23 (.918) in eight seasons, winning eight Big 12 Conference regular-season championships, six conference tournament titles, an NCAA title in 2019 and making six NCAA Elite Eight appearances.

With Messer's help, Baylor won 32 or more games in each of her first six seasons with the Bears—the last of those a 37-1 record in the 2019 NCAA title campaign. In those six years Baylor finished sixth or higher in the final Associated Press poll every season—including first in 2019 and second in 2018. Messer's eight seasons at Baylor included 23 NCAA Championship victories and at least a tie for the Big 12 regular-season title every year.

"For decades, Orlando has been a place where dreams come true, and becoming the head coach of the women's basketball program at UCF is a dream come true for me," says Messer. "My vision aligned perfectly with UCF's vision for success, and I can't thank Dr. Alexander Cartwright and Terry Mohajir enough for selecting me to lead this program. I also want to share how much I truly respect the work of each head coach who preceded me in this endeavor and thank them for all that they poured into the program and the young women that have competed and graduated from UCF. I am eager to start a new era of UCF basketball. Let's go Knights!"

During her time at Baylor, Messer oversaw scouting and recruiting, helping the Lady Bears sign the nation's top recruiting class in both 2016 and 2018 as well as the second-ranked class in 2015. She helped recruit 15 top 50 players and 14 McDonald's All-Americans. The Lady Bears had nine players selected in the WNBA Draft during that span, including Odyssey Sims, the second overall pick in 2014, and Alexis Jones, the 12th overall selection in 2017.

In addition, Messer recruited Kalani Brown, a first-round (seventh overall) draft pick of the Los Angeles Sparks in 2019, and Lauren Cox, the nation's top-rated recruit out of Flower Mound High School in Texas and the third overall draft pick by the Indiana Fever in the 2020 WNBA Draft. She also helped develop Didi Richards, the 2020 Naismith Defensive Player of the Year at Baylor, as well as 2022 first-team All-SEC honoree Khayla Pointer at LSU.

In eight years at Baylor, Messer coached Sims (the 2014 Big 12 Player of the Year) and had seven guards named first-team All-Big 12 Conference. She also recruited and signed 2021 Wade Trophy winner and Big 12 Player of the Year NaLyssa Smith. Baylor in Messer's tenure there produced eight selections on one of the three Associated Press All-America teams—including first-team picks Sims (2014), Nina Davis (2014), Cox (2020) and Smith (2021). Smith claimed first-team honors again in 2022.

Since joining the Baylor staff is 2013, Messer's teams over the last nine years have produced 73 All-Big 12 selections, 20 All-America honorees, five Big 12 Players of the Year, 26 Academic All-Big 12 selections and two All-SEC performers.

A head coach for three seasons at Tennessee Tech from 2009-10 to 2011-12, Messer led the Golden Eagles to the 2011 Ohio Valley Conference regular-season championship, two postseason appearances (WNIT in 2011, WBI in 2012), back-to-back appearances in the OVC tournament title game--and she was named the 2011 OVC Coach of the Year. Her three-year mark of 54-41 (.568) featured an overall 23-8 record in 2010-11, a three-year 34-18 OVC mark and 30-12 home record.

Messer got her start in coaching as an assistant coach for two years at Arkansas State in 2000-01 and 2001-02. Other coaching stops for Messer include assistant coaching positions at Memphis (2002-03 and 2003-04) and Georgia Tech twice (2004-05 through 2008-09; 2012-13).

In her second season at Memphis, Messer helped the Tigers to a 21-10 mark and a second-round WNIT appearance. She played a key role on Georgia Tech teams that three straight years won at least 21 games and advanced to NCAA Championships in 2007-08-09.

The Waldo, Arkansas, native was a standout women's basketball student-athlete at Arkansas, where she helped the Razorbacks reach the NCAA Final Four for the first time in school history in 1998.

Messer finished her career with the Razorbacks (1995-96 through 1998-99) ranked in the school's top 10 for points (1,379) and rebounds (603). She was a two-time captain for Arkansas as a junior and senior and was named to the SEC All-Freshman team in 1996. Messer's top individual season came when she averaged 12.6 points per game in 1997-98 and she added 12.2 per game as senior in 1998-99.

She was named the 1998 NCAA Championship West Regional MVP after helping Arkansas to a berth in the Final Four—thanks to regional wins over Kansas (led by Messer's 24 points) and eight-ranked Duke (team-leading 20 points). Arkansas, seeded ninth in the NCAA bracket that year, became the first unranked team in the modern era to advance to the Final Four. The win over Duke is ranked as the greatest in Arkansas women's basketball history.

Messer also helped Arkansas to the 1999 WNIT championship. She's a member of the Razorbacks Hall of Honor (inducted in 2018) and was part of the 2012 Class of SEC greats.

She started 96 career games, played in 128 consecutive games and helped her Razorback teams to win totals of 21 as a freshman (1995-96), 22 as a junior (1997-98) and 20 as a senior (1998-99).

Messer played in the summer prior to graduation for the collegiate squad of Athletes in Action. She also played for the post-college Athletes in Action touring team.

She is a 2000 graduate of Arkansas, with a Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology. She has been an honorary chair of Habitat for Humanity--and she also was a 2012 graduate of the Center for Coaching Excellence.

The energy around this season needs to change

We wait all year for this and their seems to be little to no hype for our team

huepel was a turd personality but the program had more “juice” and buildup than this season

is that a Gus thing or TMo? Did we lose key staff? Just seems way off

disclaimer : I like Gus as a program builder and leader. Maybe this is a bigger rebuild than he realised

JRP not running late in the game?

Can someone explain to me why JRP did not run the last few plays of the last drive when he could have easily picked up the 3rd and 5 or the 4th and 5? I went home and watched and both plays there was a gaping hole in the d-line and plenty of room to run and extend the drive. I know time was running down, around 1 minute or so, but he could have easily picked up the first down.

UCF travels to "Paradise" this Saturday night to face in-state rival FAU.

Willie Taggart, whose coaching career includes previous stops at South Florida, Oregon and Florida State, begins his third season at FAU. His Owls enter the game with a 2-1 record with wins against Charlotte and Southeastern Louisiana and a road loss at Ohio.

FAU's offense is led by quarterback N'Kosi Perry, a sixth-year player who began his career at Miami.

UCF owns a 3-0 lead in the all-time series with victories in 2003, 2018 and 2019, but optimism is high in Boca Raton this could be the best opportunity for the Owls to take down the Knights.

We caught up with Zach Weinberger, FAU beat writer for the Palm Beach Post, to talk about the state of FAU heading into this matchup.

I lost count in just the first two paragraphs how many insults this gator writer put into the article when discussing how UCF has surpassed usf, but a win is a win. The guy actually did his research and wrote gems such as this:

In a cosmic turn of events that will baffle football scholars for centuries, the Bulls ascended to the No. 2 spot in the BCS poll on Oct. 14, 2007.

GAME 3: FAU Sim results and predictions.

9/13/2022 FAU Edition:

Let's recap Louisville, and while we're at it...the whole damn weekend.

So, to be fair, I did nail the defense in predictions. I expected low to mid-20s for a score for Louisville.

The PROBLEM was, OFFENSE. WOW. What a step back...actually one of the worst offensive performances at UCF since Scott Frost's first year. None of us predicted that, not even Vegas (Line was UCF -6.5).

What lost the game? A combination of timing issues on the Offensive line and penalties. I'm not as hard on Plumlee. Sure he made mistakes, but the amount of blame placed on Plumlee simply was not fair in my opinion. Of course Plumlee went down a lot. Why do you think that is versus his success with SC State? Because the Oline faced a major step up in competition. There were tremendous runs and catches that were called back also. Plumlee had very little time to go through his reads and Louisville did exactly what they needed to do. Kudos to Satterfield.

Looking at the box score, both teams were about the same. Even the QBs had similar completions out of about the same number of attempts. The totals edged to Louisville due to having more possession and UCF had the penalties deductions.

Going to UCiF here a second....but if those two scores were kept and the TD catch at the end was called as it should (I replayed that thing over and over, his foot was down and his butt landed while he had the ball in my opinion), UCF wins that game and clears the spread. It's impossible to factor in bad refs. But, to be honest a team shouldn't be in the position to have bad calls anyway.

There were MANY "upsets" this last weekend. That doesn't come as any surprise to me as those that have followed my posts over the last few years know that I have said the following over and over:

Transfers, and the increase of population-density in recruiting-rich regions will lead to parity in the FBS. More talent is available than what can be possibly be rated accurately. That fact alone reinforces the need for expansion of the playoffs. That is also something UCF's success is historically predicated on, finding the talent (and coachable athletes) that go under the radar.

I don't believe the season will be devalued much with playoff expansion, if so? Negligible. Teams will still play for byes and seeding. Only 12 out of 131 will participate, and only 8 will have to play in quarterfinals to play the 4 that get byes (per recent proposed structure). The season isn't extended at all for ~91% of the FBS (assuming teams can get bowl eligible)

Moving onto the FAU Owls...

----
FAU Fun-Facts:

Lyndon Johnson was at the opening of FAU in 1964.

FAU is on the former site of the Boca Raton Army Air Field. It was proposed before UCF, but opened after.

FAU was not adept at queue management in 2019. Let's hope there was improvement.

They have a pyrotechnically-inclined student body. Don't leave matches around, and especially hide any accelerants, like butane, or lighter fluid.

They burned Knightro in effigy in 2019 not knowing that in doing so, they released a Knight's spirit that ran amok and plagued their bench. That's what happened. Their players were tackling and blocking themselves, their QB, Robinson would run and fall 5 steps after the wind would reach him from a missed-tackle attempt.

They have good coffee.

They will pass USF in the AAC due to already having a good on-campus atmosphere and stadium.

----
Players to watch for FAU:

FAU made GREAT use of the portal, much like UCF. Location is important.

Nkosi Perry - QB, 6'4", 198. Dual-threat Cane Transfer, BIGGER than Malik Cunningham. I am sure this man is liking what he saw from Louisville.

Larry McCammon - RB, 5' 11", 204. EXPERIENCED. So far this year he has 43 attempts for 303 yards. 7 yards a carry.

LaJohntay Wester - WR, 5'11", 165. Has 15 catches for 222 yards, 3 TDs

Carter Boatright - TE, 6'4", 240. Transfer from Florida State, good hands, has height.

***Onto the REAL Beef*** (or Jerk Chicken over Cauliflower Rice and grilled Brocoletti)

Weather forecast at 7:30PM Eastern kickoff:
Sunset: 7:22pm
Temp: 81F
Chance of rain: 40%
Be prepared people. Come on. It's September in Florida.

TV: CBS Sports

I ran 12 CPU simulations for a good math spread. Half with Rain, half without to simulate approximate rain chance. I had to adjust the line a bit, I still think Plumlee will have to run a bit this game like last one. He may have more success, but I still worry. Defense SHOULD do its job again. They did last week, held Louisville to two TDs. UCF was just anemic on offense.

I will say that I am not 100% optimistic about UCF in this game like many of my peers, and apprently the math. I think UCF has to be on point and play a near-perfect game and this will be a bit close for comfort. Does UCF win? I believe so...cautiously. Make no mistake, this will feel very much like a rivalry. It essentially is, and I would like it if it continued versus usf. I actually want FAU to do well as a program as they are putting in the work needed, and not cutting corners (outside of their stadium design of course).

For this game, I believe it is imperative to get the ball first on offense to set momentum and force FAU to work from behind.

Games with rain trended HIGHER in score, which was odd.

Average of 12 simulation results:

UCF 49
FAU 35

Sim Avg Spread:
UCF -14 (Vegas: UCF -10.5 2:52PM 9/13/22)

"Heart" Prediction:

I WANT to believe UCF fixes the problem with the Oline. I trust in Gus. Defense allows 1 more TD than Louisville due to FAU knowing where to attack based on Louisville game.

UCF 45
FAU 21

"Heart" spread:

CENTRAL FLORIDA: -17 (Vegas be damned)

My friend's son Julian's prediction:

UCF 38
FAU 14

Julian's line of doom: UCF -24 (He's not old enough for Vegas, sorry)

UCONN's stadium is a dump

so I was in Hartford today and thought I would take a detour to see the uconn stadium. As I drove up I noticed the parking lots were in bad shape, poorly striped, asphalt buckling and weeks growing through much of the concrete. I was able to walk right into the stadium and was very under impressed. The walk ways were low, the concourse area was just concrete the scoreboard was adequate but there was no video ribbons, no college atmosphere, nothing. It may be a concrete stadium compared to UCF's metal one but UCF's has character. With the improvements under way at UCF, there is little comparison to uconn' they basically have a slightly better Liberty bowl.

Progressive States/Cities to Women: DNA from Rape Kit Will Later Be Used to Track and Convict You

Gotta love those 'Free, Progressives' states and cities ...

Did I warn you ladies... or did I warn you? This is what the 'progressive' government does to you. As I always say... I trust women more than the government. I hope the SCOTUS kicks Cali, and SanFran, to the Curb on this one. Track victims that are citizens, but don't you dare track undocumented residents that are arrested, even convicted, of violent offenses! Priorities are totally f'd up.
