Penalties and stalled second-half drives doomed UCF's offense in the 20-14 loss to Louisville, but tight end
Alec Holler says the team has learned from the mistakes and intends to right the ship this weekend down at FAU.
The redshirt senior was the offensive representative at this week's press conference.
Recap:
He spoke about the Louisville loss being tough, mentioning the "24 hour rule." They've watched the film, made corrections and will be better next week.
What has John Rhys Plumlee said about his performance?
"He's a team guy. He talked about, 'I need to be better for you guys.' Us around him need to do a better job of helping him. Like Coach Malzahn said, the quarterback in a win is going to get a lot of praise. In a loss he's going to get trashed a lot."
Holler spoke of eliminating the holding penalties.
What has the team said to encourage JRP?
"Dude, you're a quarterback. We believe in you. You're a great player. We've seen what you can do, man. That's one game. We're past it. We're going to improve. You'll see this week. We'll be a lot better."
Kobe and ROK are playmakers and UCF definitely missed them. Alec then mentioned his drop and how crucial that was. He needed to step up. Said "X" (Xavier Townsend) played well.
I asked if JRP is hard on himself.
"He's a competitor. He loves this team. He loves the game, loves to compete and loves to win more than anything. Anyone after a loss is going to be tough on themselves. 24-hour rule. We're past this game. We're focused on FAU and winning the next game and not letting one game affecting the rest of our season."
One of the players said Saturday night they can't let this loss divide them. Holler said he needs to be a positive influence. They need to be a team and not blame each other. They win and lose as a team.
There were "glimpses" of UCF being a "great offense" against Louisville.
On FAU, they're a "great team." He watched the FAU-Ohio game because Parker Navarro is at Ohio. "Their offense is great. Their defense is pretty solid. They put up a lot of points. They should be a good challenge for us and I think we're going to be up for it this Saturday."
The defense gave the offense a lot of opportunities against UL. The offense didn't step up, but they will step up in the coming weeks.
Holler remembers how FAU fans burned a Knightro statue prior to the 2019 game. "I'd love to see Knight Nation show out in Boca."
He enjoyed watching the Appalachian State upset of Texas A&M. He mentioned Kaedin Robinson being at App State.
